A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

I met Neal Adams once at a comic convention in the midlands about twelve/thirteen years ago. I queued for half an hour to shake his hand and got the chance to have a brief chat with him. He was very self-effacing and very polite.  I asked him how he felt about introducing the word "socialism" to artists, letterers and inkers back in the 70s. He laughed and said that the word 'socialism' wasn't ever used in the States except in a derogatory sense but that certainly things had changed significantly in the 70s, especially after publishers agreed to hand original artwork back to their original creators. From his huge portfolio, he showed me a couple of Batman sketches from the early 70s that he'd been given back, after the comic had gone to print.  I thanked him for all his artwork in the late 60s and wished him well for the future.

Thanking and shaking hands became my go-to behavior after an early negative Con experience getting an autograph.

Many years later I was able to thank and shake hands with Jack Kirby and Will Eisner. I wouldn't trade that for all the autographs in the world.

Had a very long day and am just now getting here.

Below is Neal Adams' only contribution to the Wonder Woman-Conan the Barbarian crossover produced between DC and Dark Horse Comics, which raises a question that I've never found a satisfactory answer to.

Just how many people besides the rare (lucky?) comic book store customer, any retailer that might keep them to sell at higher prices later, and resources like The Grand Comics Database actually see all the variant covers that get produced?

Since the Grand Comics Database is maintained by fans, I've noticed that variant covers (and sometimes non-variant covers) don't make it there. Someone committed to updating GCD actually has to have the book or have access to an image or it will never be there.

I don't normally say so (lazy) but 99% of the covers I post are from GCD.

When they finally reprint this run of Batman, will they be able to reprint this licensed story?
