A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

ALL-AMERICA COMICS #18: The Green Lantern story this issue does indeed take place at the New York World's Fair, but has nothing to do with the cover. A gangster named Murdock obtains a concessions permit from Judge Wake by kidnapping his daughter. The permit gives him a foothold to operate a protection racket from inside the fair and to steal the gate receipts of Hall of Music concert to benefit infantile paralysis. Danny Miller wants to quit the gang, but Murdock frames him for manslaughter. Fearing for his sister's safety should he talk, Miller keeps quiet. Irene Miller meets Alan Scott at the fair, tells him the story, and he resolves to help as Green Lantern.

THE X-MEN AT THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS: I know of this comic from 1991's "First Issue Covers Trading Card Series II" but the only copy I ever saw was too expensive. The plot is by Jim Salicrup, script David Kraft, pencillers Kerry Gammil and Alan Kupperberg, inker Chic Stone, Letterer Rick Parker, Colorist Marie Severin and cover by John Romita, Jr. Plot synopsis: "In an attempt to locate a potential new member, the X-Men race to the Texas State Fair hoping to arrive before the leader of the brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Magneto, does." Several years ago, "Big Tex" burned down during the closing days of the fair. It got so much coverage I thought it should be made an annual event. It has since been replaced by a (supposedly) less creepy-looking version. (J.R., Jr.'s rendering does not do it justice.) 

I am unfamiliar with the Dallas Times Herald, which ran for 102 years and folded in 1991.

I opened my contributions for this month discussing trained animals jumping through hoops at some carnival/fair sideshows before slyly acknowledging The Black Canary's 75th anniversary, an event which DC doesn't seem to be celebrating.

But it turns out BC was copying a previous "animal" act.
