A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Here's a change from various "Who shot...?" covers that (probably) only feature an attempted murder: "Who Murdered the Mooncat?"  There surely can't be any doubt that this is a genuine murder mystery, can there?

Apologies; have been away for a few days. Back now and on the case. I'm not sure if 'Modesty Blaise' was big in the US, but she sure was big here in the UK. She appeared in a comic strip that ran for years and years in the Birmingham Evening Mail, and I followed her adventures for many a year. She was exceedingly rich and dabbled in detective work to prevent her life from becoming too boring. Possibly my first fictional heart-throb (I would have been about 10 or 11 at the time).

Modesty Blaise was well known in certain circles (comic strip collectors), but not generally well know. I used to suggest in reader polls that the St. Louis Post-Dispatch carry her, knowing that American newspapers (and American newspaper readers) are far to tight-assed to accept the strip. She was featured in the anthology Comics Revue as well as several anthology albums.

I have a few of the collected editions of the Modesty Blaise newspaper strips that Titan books published.  I enjoy the strips, but I'm much more a fan of the (non-graphic) novels and short-story collections in which she also appeared.

These give a much greater depth of character to Modesty and all her friends than is possible in the comic strips.  They're written by Peter O'Donnell, who created the character, and wrote every one of her newspaper strips.  I own copies of all thirteen of the books that O'Donnell produced, and re-read the complete series every few years.  I recommend the books unreservedly!

One word of warning, though.  The final story, "Cobra Trap", is definitively the last ever Modesty Blaise tale, and should not be read out of order.  It is absolutely heartbreaking, and still brings tears to my eyes every time I read it.
