A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

"The Rose and the Thorn" feature debuts in Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #105, telling the saga of Rhosyn "Rose" Forrest who seeks justice for the murder of her father, Phil Forrest of the Metropolis P.D. Rose has what was then called a "split personality"; when night falls, unbeknownst to her, she adopts the vigilante guise of The Thorn and goes after the criminal gang The 100.

Agatha Christie's greatest murder mystery but featured no detective save the readers and victims. It was so complex that it needed TWO epilogues to explain everything! 

Plus, the poster of the 2015 BBC mini-series which was the best adaption of it I've seen and I've seen about six of them!

I can depart from "Angel" for one evening, as I found this British comic cover from 1953. Although, when they say "From the famous story by Edgar Wallace" all I can say is the story of the "Door with the 7 Locks" certainly wasn't famous at all around here!

We've discussed this before but The Maze Agency was/is one of my favorite all time series and it's a dang shame the book isn't still in production.

Angel Face Investigates is a half-page strip in The Beano.  The lead character operates a detective agency based in the roof space in her dad's garage, and is assisted by her friend Jenny.  I haven't found a cover appearance, so here are a couple of the strips instead.  Unusually, these co-star Beanotown's resident super-hero Bananaman, and one of his arch-enemies General Blight.

These strips may help explain why, when residents of Beanotown were asked to pick two words to describe Angel Face, the commonest choice was "clever and evil".
