A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Here's a series that I've never read though I heard about in promos from that time: Lt. Hunter's Hellcats!

Based on The Dirty Dozen, though it came out before the movie, the premise was revisited by Marvel with Combat Kelly and His Deadly Dozen.

It also inspired the Fatal Five!

House of Secrets #63, from 1963 - Alex Toth cover art. I never realised that Eclipso was the most daring character ever created in comics!  Who knew?

Eclipso was probably thought to be daring because, I think, he was the first bad guy to headline a feature.

Maybe House of Secrets should have been House of Hyperbole -- in addition to Eclipso's feature, Mark Merlin is advertised as a thrill-a-minute mystery.  There are earlier examples of bad guys as the headliners of features, and Yellow Claw is even Code approved, but it was a rarity for the Silver Age (and DC).

My last "H" cover, Hulk #3. The soldier's comment that he was flying is understandable, but this was just the first time he traveled by enormous leaps.

After learning about the Legion of Super-Heroes' existence from the "Composite Superman" reprint from World's Finest Comics #223 (Ju'74), I snatched up Superboy starring the Legion of Super-Heroes #203 (Au'74) the moment I saw it! Almost as if it knew it was my first Legion comic, the story gave little intros to each character! Superboy, along with Justice League of America, was the first title that I "collected", meaning I bought every issue I could!

Sadly, my first S/LSH had the death of the Invisible Kid, though they tried to give it a happy twist. Later I found out that he was one the Legion's greatest leaders.

It also thought me if a minor or seldom seen character is suddenly on the cover, that's never a good thing!

Though we're only supposed to covers here, I give you Lyle Norg's noble sacrifice!
