A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Plus they both starred in movie serials in the 40s and appeared in multiple titles during the Golden Age as the Vigilante was featured in Action Comics, Leading Comics and Western Comics.

Completely forgot about the Weisinger connection (sounds so ominous!).

The Vigilante's Golden Age berth was Action Comics; he was created by Mort Weisinger, the longtime Superman editor; they both had small town backgrounds (the Kents were farmers before they moved into Smallville and opened a general store. The Vigilante was a sheriff's son from Wyoming). Also, their costumes are blue and red.

I skimmed through Showcase Presents JLA #1 and didn’t find any evidence of J’onn J’onzz breathing underwater, but Gardner Fox seemed to have settled on super-breath being his main super power.  He was always huffing and puffing.  Given that emphasis it’s not much of a leap that he could “hold his breath” underwater.  Also, he could have shapeshifted to a “water-breather.”  In the final panel JJ and Superman are talking to each other.

I was struck by the illustration in that they have not only Superman but Wonder Woman and J'onn J'onzz not requiring breathing gear under water. Had this been previously established? 

In one story Wonder Woman had artificial gills. I thought otherwise she held her breath, but Google Images found me several images from the Kanigher/Andru era where she seems to be breathing underwater: Wonder Woman #116 (Wonder Girl attends a mer-people dance with Mer-Boy); Wonder Woman #129 (Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl and Wonder Tot talk underwater); Wonder Woman #138 (Wonder Girl talks to Mer-Boy underwater).

J'onn was breathing underwater (or not breathing at all) in Justice League of America #18 when he teamed with Aquaman and the Flash (who swan up to get air at super-speed, natch) when the battled the Marine Protector of Starzl.
