A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

I was struck by the illustration in that they have not only Superman but Wonder Woman and J'onn J'onzz not requiring breathing gear under water. Had this been previously established?

This one was an inset on Steve's post, so I thought I should post it while I can. The GCD indexer notes that the key is shown as a "skeleton key." I remember buying such skeleton keys as toys back then, but they were made to look like standard keys. By the time they were selling them I don't think too many locks were around that would fit them. Of course, Superman later disguised the key as a directional arrow.

Without looking it up, I'd guess the Superman/Lori Lemaris stories established this for Superman, and the Wonder Girl/Mer-Boy & Wonder Woman/Mer-Man did so for Wonder Woman.  I don't know for J'onn J'onzz but if not in Detective or HOM then it might have come up in an issue of JLA  if he and Aquaman were teamed up.

The Vigilante's Golden Age berth was Action Comics; he was created by Mort Weisinger, the longtime Superman editor; they both had small town backgrounds (the Kents were farmers before they moved into Smallville and opened a general store. The Vigilante was a sheriff's son from Wyoming). Also, their costumes are blue and red.

In one story Wonder Woman had artificial gills. I thought otherwise she held her breath, but Google Images found me several images from the Kanigher/Andru era where she seems to be breathing underwater: Wonder Woman #116 (Wonder Girl attends a mer-people dance with Mer-Boy); Wonder Woman #129 (Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl and Wonder Tot talk underwater); Wonder Woman #138 (Wonder Girl talks to Mer-Boy underwater).
