A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Most of the covers for last December's "foreign languages" theme were obviously from non-US publishers, making it repetitive to do "published in a foreign land" again.  So my understanding is that this month's theme means "depicting a foreign (i.e. non-US) land".  Of course, they can also be foreign-published, but that's not a requirement!

Re your other question: according to the GCD, the date of ACW #638 was February 7, 1989, with an on-sale date of 22 December 1988.  That's over a year later than SO #19 (October 1987, on sale July 7 1987), so it looks unlikely that SO was the "last" Kirby artwork.

Thanks, Pete! I was just about to log off and pull out my ACW box to verify, but you saved me the trouble.

Regarding the August theme, Hulk #145 & #146 take place in Egypt and Israel respectively, but there's nothing really on the cover to indicate that, so I'll go with #246 (the first of a series to which I call "dibs") set in foreign lands, in this case Israel.

Batman was a world traveler in Brave & Bold! He and Wonder Woman took part in an auto race in Europe (#87), met his Bat-Squad in London (#92) and encountered a House of Mystery on an Irish isle (#93).

Vampires and Werewolves (October):

Quite a number of vampire and werewolf covers appeared during June, when the theme was "The Moon".  We have had a couple of suggestions of how to prevent October's covers from getting repetitive.

• Avoid covers that show the Moon (if there's no moon, they wouldn't have been posted in June!)
• Avoid covers where the vampire or werewolf is the protagonist (so we don't get complete runs of Tomb of Dracula or I, Vampire, or Werewolf by Night or...)

An interesting concept, covers featuring countries other than the USA. Does this include other worlds? If so, half of DC's superhero silver-age qualifies.  But for starters, I'll stick to other countries rather than other worlds.  I'm not sure what country appears here, but it sure as hell ain't the USA.
