Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

The X-Men in Japan!

This is a pulp cover rather than a comic cover, but I love it just the same.

The Pacific, maybe even Hawaii before it was part of the US

This Dutch title translates to The Death of Captain Cook, which occurred on the "Big Island" called Hawai'i before it and several other islands became a U.S. territory and later a state.

Two for France.. I say A Tale of Two Cities is France because IIRC most of the action takes place there.

One more for Switzerland

Let’s check in on Pete and Bonnie one last time.

Pete’s in Egypt

Bonnie’s in the French Alps

and so as not to upset the balance between England and France, here is a cover (I assume) for England (Peter, it’s a few days off from my 21st birthday, the 10th, but close; no matter where I am in the world I never have to think about how to write my birthday, it’s always 10/10).

Another generic Africa, and a bit of a stretch for next month, since it's already self-consciously "goofy," but still:

I get that the popular children's comic from India may be made by people who hear the word, "tinkle," a little differently than some cultures, but  to use yellow as the predominant colour! Was the artist a fan of the Whizzer? And look at the look in their eyes! Just what does that gorilla intend to do with his really large banana?

Yeah, I can do better. That's for next month.

August is coming to and end! As the say in Sweden:

Peter Wrexham said:

And a reminder of the definition of next month's "MST3K" theme.

Is there a list os the Already-settled-upon topics coming up?

Seems to me I submitted several a year or so ago I never saw voted upon.

My last two for August, both apparently Africa

I started the month with this:

Peter Wrexham said on August 1, 2020 at 12:41pm:

I'll end the month with the original covers for three of the stories reprinted in that issue.

"Evil in England"

"Crime in Canada"

"Illegality in Italy".  The Giant cover doesn't actually mention Italy, but this story was one of the ones reprinted.

Seems to me I submitted several a year or so ago I never saw voted upon.

The next three months are:

  • September - MST3K
  • October - Vampires and Werewolves
  • November - Giants

You made this suggestion last year.

Jeff of Earth-J said on May 29, 2019 at 8:40am:

Another suggestion: two groups of heroes (or a group of heroes and a group of villains) lined up to fight each other.

Actually, any of Julius Schwartz's list of cover elements that sell comics books would be good: motorcycles, apes, the color purple, a big burning question, etc.

We've since used motorcycles and apes.

Other suggestions that I've got noted include:

  • Cats & cat-themed adventurers
  • Characters wielding unfeasibly large guns
  • Bridges
  • Mothers & Fathers
  • Falling down
  • Robots
  • New costumes (either permanent or one-shots)
  • Planes
  • Time travel

There may have been more that I've forgotten.

Last one for August!

The reprinted stories have Jimmy Olsen in London vs the Purple Pimpernel! Yikes! That's bad!

And Lois Lane in a South American jungle!
