A Cover a Day

Ok, how about this for an idea.  We take it in turns to post a favourite (British spelling) comic cover every day.  This went really well on the comic fan website that I used to frequent.  What we tried to do was find a theme or subject and follow that, until we all got bored with that theme.  I'd like to propose a theme of letters of the alphabet. So, for the remainder of October (only 5 days) and all of November, we post comic cover pictures associated with the letter "A".  Then in December, we post covers pertaining to the letter "B".  The association to the letter can be as tenuous as you want it to be. For example I could post a cover from "Adventure Comics" or "Amazing Spider Man".  However Spider Man covers can also be posted when we're on the letter "S".  Adventure Comic covers could also be posted when we're on the letter "L" if they depict the Legion of Super Heroes.  So, no real hard, fast rules - in fact the cleverer the interpretation of the letter, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

And it's not written in stone that we have to post a cover every day. There may be some days when no cover gets posted. There's nothing wrong with this, it just demonstrates that we all have lives to lead.

If everyone's in agreement I'd like to kick this off with one of my favourite Action Comic covers, from January 1967. Curt Swan really excelled himself here.

Off the top of my head, I remember the pre-Crisis Superboy meeting young Bruce Wayne and young Arthur Curry. Who else did he meet, Legionnaires?

Since the background is yellow, they made Oliver's hair red instead of blond. I haven't read the story since it came out, but apparently it has Oliver interested in archery (and wearing his GA costume!) well before adulthood. I understand that the Golden Age version had him finding a treasure and using the money to fund his crimefighting.

According to http://www.mikesamazingworld.com/features/newsstand.php, Adventure Comics #258 went on sale in January 1959.

Two months earlier in Adventure #256, Jack Kirby's Green Arrow origin had him becoming proficient at archery while marooned on an island. Why Weisinger would choose to contradict the Kirby version two months later is an interesting question. Did Kirby and Weisinger get along?

It's not clear from the cover, but an early meeting of Superboy and Bruce Wayne is recounted in World's Finest #184 (OCT56). Synopsis follows:

This seems to be in the vein of the Superboy/Oliver Queen story in that it has the future hero already acting like a detective while his parents are still alive.

She's not a hero, but they had Superboy meet Lori Lemaris in Adventure #280(JAN61) in another continuity-challenging story. Previously it had been established that they met for the first time as adults.

Robin/Dick Grayson went into the past and met Superboy in Adventure #253(OCT58).

For a 14 year old Canadian kid, this was pretty cool.  A whole team of Canadian super-heroes, including a newcomer named Marrina from Atlantic Canada, the same region of the country I live in.  I think I had seen members of Alpha Flight only twice before - Sasquatch in Hulk Annual 8,and Vindicator, Snowbird, and Shaman (and Heather Hudson) in Uncanny X-Men 139.

The only others I find mention of are an appearance of a time-travelling adult Jimmy Olsen, in Superboy #55(MAR57), and a non-time-travelling toddler Jimmy Olsen and his parents, in Adventure Comics #216 (SEP55). Neither were cover featured. There is supposed to be a meeting of the Earth-2 Kal-L with the Earth-1 Kal-El when they were both Superboys, apparently in the past of Earth-2. This one was supposed to be in the late 70s or early 80s, but I can't pinpoint it. That's all I can find. I credit Wikipedia for providing clues and as always the Grand Comics Database.
