I was scanning All Star Squadron 50 to 59 into the computer. In issue 50 there is a version of "Shanghaied into Hyperspace" where the original JSA is captured by nazi's and sent off in rockets. It was a re-telling in a way of "Shanghaied into Space" but with a Crisis on Infinite Earths twist to it. In the story the JSA is meeting in their brownstone when they all start to loose consciousness because nazi agents have sealed the building and are pumping out all of the air. They all succumb except the Spectre who muses that he doesn't need oxygen, but then collapses anyway. Anyone know what the nazi's used to take him out? I'm missing 57 and 58 and everything after 59 so if the explanation is there I don't have it.

The original story in All Star Comics #13 (N'42) "Shanghied Into Space!" gave the explaination that the Spectre was taken off guard despite being a ghost powered by God but in Roy Thomas' The All Star Companion Vol 1 and 2, there's the theory that it was supposed to Doctor Fate involved who could be affected by oxygen deprivation. However the Spectre was being primed to get his own title so they switched characters but not the plot!
When Roy began to adapt it in All Star Squadron #50 (O'85) as "Shanghied Into HYPER-Space!", he had the Astral Avenger collapse with no apparent reason and it was a big shock to the Spectre as well!
BTW, All Star Comics #13's Wonder Woman chapter originally by Gardner Fox was rewritten by Doctor William Moulton Marston AKA Charles Moulton and drawn by Harry G. Peter. In fact, elements from it were interwoven into the Amazon Princess' own features!
So it was never explained? I guess that is the problem with a character like the Spectre. So far in the issues I have it seems like a nice series. I had to laugh a little bit. As the nazi agents enter into the JSA conference room one of the agents ask why they just don't shoot the helpless heroes but another says that they have to follow the plan. They don't even know if a bullet would affect the Spectre or Wonder Woman. I could almost see an un-written rule being followed that the heros can't be killed that easily because the next issue has to come out.
It would be unlike Thomas not to have explained it. I'd try looking for an explanation in the Spectre's "Shanghaied into Hyperspace" instalment, which the GCD tells me was in #59. The point may also have come up on a letters page.
I didn't read #50. Might it have been explained in terms of the Spectre's not coping well with the transition to hyperspace?
The Spectre was knocked out before he ever went into hyperspace. My personal theory was that the Voice made him pass out because the Ghostly Guardian had to go to hyperspace to help the aliens in his chapter. "God works in Mysterious Ways", y'know!
So I scanned through issue #59 and The Spectre does mention that he needs to get back to Earth to find out why he was affected by such earthly things and then goes on and helps some alien race obtain peace on their world.
Issue #60 was the conclusion but it's never explained why The Spectre was affected. The JSA calls Hitler and thumbs their noses at him and he's quite P.O.'ed. This was a Hitler plan so maybe Randy is right and it's the Spear of Destiny's doing but as far as I can see it's never mentioned.
It's a mystery.

I don't know, but I suspect the Spear of Destiny might have been involved.
