I created this list for my own purposes (I needed to be able to keep track of these things, too often I found myself having purchased books I already owned), but I thought I would share it. This includes every book I currently own (that I have read, I have a couple that I haven't read yet) that is either about Japan or the Japanese or was written by a Japanese person.  It doesn't represent every such book that I've ever read - I've gotten rid of a few books over the years. It also doesn't include manga, although it does include books about manga.

  • ...Including books written by ethnically Japanese persons who live elsewhere ?
I relatively recently read WWII Japanese internment memoir FAREWELL TO MANZANAR , co-written by the Japanese-American woman to whom it happened...and her Caucasian-American husband , who , in fact , had the copyright , IIRC .

  • Interesting-  I haven't seen that one. I shall have to look it up.

  • Updated with The  Old Tea Seller- Life and Zen Poetry in 18th Century Kyoto, by Baisaō. Baisaō was a Zen Buddhist priest, who gave up the religious life to sell tea, becoming one of Old Kyoto's best-remembered eccentrics.

  • Updated with The Devotion of Suspect X, by Keigo Higashino. An entertaining little detective story.  A woman kills her ex-husband, and a neighbor who's sweet on her offers to help her cover it up.  Riveting stuff.

  • Samurai Revolution – The Dawn of Modern Japan Seen Through the Eyes of the Shogun’s Last Samurai, by Romulus Hillsborough, an interesting look at Japan just before, during and just after the Meiji Restoration.

  • Updated with The World of the Shining Prince – Court Life in Ancient Japan, by Ivan Morris. It's an interesting look at the lives of the aristocracy in Heian Era Japan.

  • Updated with People Who Eat Darkness.
