The long-running strip 'Cathy' will have its last daily on Oct. 2 and its last Sunday on Oct. 3, as creator Cathy Guisewite wishes to spend more time with her family.

  • Gosh, I haven't thought about that comic strip in years.
  • Ack!
  • At least, it's not during swimsuit season!
  • The local paper dropped it a few years ago; it's been months since I've looked at it.
  • I can't wait for the Frank Miller revamp.

  • Good riddance.

When I was much younger, I always hoped that the character would find happiness. It became apparent, though, that the comic Cathy was never going to be happy because she's always sabotage herself. This is in direct opposition to Charlie Brown who may always fail but it's rarely his fault and he keeps a positive attitude about life. So, I gave up reading Cathy years ago. I think the Oregonian still has the strip but they put it somewhere other than the comics pages.

    But that's just my opinion.
  • I usually find Cathy embarrassing, because she's just so unlikable, even accepting that she's supposed to be exaggerated. Granted, I'm not the target audience, but I hope people were reading it just because they always did, not because they related.

I'm more excited about what the Chicago Tribune will replace it with. They seldom have an opportunity to bring in a new strip that isn't replacing something that someone likes and wants back. This is a new slate. I assume they'll make it a young-women's cultural strip of some kind, but ALMOST ANYTHING OUT THERE will be more fun to read.

I'm guessing it will be Rhymes with Orange, which they've been using for several years as a back-up/vacation strip. But maybe they'll keep that in that slot and bring in something new. It'll be interesting to see in any event.

  • The quality of newspaper comics has plunged so low, it's hard to feel sorrow over the death of any strip (except maybe regrets over lost potential). At this point, I would be satisfied if the syndicates axed virtually all their strips and just ran classics from the past. Only that wouldn't work so well, because the pages have shrunk so much since the heydays of Herriman, McCay, Caniff, Foster, Capp, Gould, etc.
  • I think the Phantom strip is fantastic. It's very well done, and the producers have an excellent handle on the property. Although the pacing of an adventure strip with 3 panels a day is glacial!

He's ridiculously popular here in Australia for some reason. The strips are collected in comics format very frequently and they are steady sellers in that format too.

The Trib has (as I'm sure you know) been restructuring its comics pages so much over the past couple of years that I don't think it's safe to assume any kind of consistency, but if memory serves, On a Claire Day was always their strip of choice to fill in when Cathy would go on vacation.
