...The NBC-TV remake of Rogers & Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC as a " live play " production's airing is about one month in the past now , and I meant to post about it here before that ! But I didn't...
With 18 million viewers IIRC , it certainly qualified as " a hit " . NBC even repeated it a week-and-a-halfish later .
I saw it both times:-) .
It was meant to be a " TV play/live production " in the mode of the PLAYHOUSE 90/BELL TELEPHONE HOURs of yore , NBC claiming " For the first time in fifty years..." . I , myself , on the West Coast of the continguous 48 states of the USA (California) saw it as an immediate taped repeat , anyway , being 3 time zones to the west of the Eastern Time Zone , where it would have indeed shown live ~ along with the Central Time Zone .
The Mountain Time Zone , especially for such a " holiday special " as this , I am not so sure about . Anyone ?????
Has it shown outside of the U.S,. yet ~ I know we have Australian and Canadian residents here , others ???

Does anybody remember that, in the 90s, NBC (I think ) had a franchise going of filmed classic musical remakes? I recall ones of THE MUSIC MAN and BYE BYE BIRDIE - The latter having Vanessa Williams (who I think uses her middle initial as an actress due to an Actor's Equity conflict) , an African-American, as Rosie, created by Chita Rivera in th he original Broadway production. This gains relevance considering the " joking on Latino stereotypes " " Flaming " song in BBB. A few years back I saw the San Francisco PBS was broadcasting the San Francisco Opera's production of SHOW BOAT. Could this have been a San Francisco-only exclusive?
There's another actress named Vanessa Williams -- we saw her on The Flash as Joe West's estranged wife Francine -- so Vanessa Williams the former Miss America was obliged to use her middle initial for a while. As I understand it, she really didn't want to. There was some argument that she was already famous from other ventures -- singing, Broadway, being Miss America -- so she didn't have to use the middle initial and eventually stopped doing it.
As for the performance of Show Boat that you mention, your description of it answers your own question.
The ABC live remake of an episode each of ALL IN THE FSMILY and THE JEFFERSOMS is to-night - I guess it's already started in the U.S. Eastern time zone already? It's nearing 7 PM here in Cali as I write this...apparently ABC here in SF will run it at 8 PM, delayed, but not waiting Tim's what I understood to be the 9:30 Eastern start time...It may bleep out some language that the original shows allowed!! I meant to write of this here before...
