This interlude issue takes place in Bigby Wolf’s favorite hunting forest, which is the Platonic ideal of the deep dark woods. But it would fit nicely as a heaven for wolves in the afterlife. And so it is.

FOREVER EVIL #2

As highly anticipated as they are treacherous, the events of Forever Evil promise to reshape the scope and characters of the DC Universe forever.

Fans who have already picked up issue #1 know that the status quo of a world where the Justice League are presumed dead is totally unlike anything we’ve seen in The New 52 so far. Following the shocking events of the first issue (for a spoiler-ific recap, check out our “This Just Happened” column!), what will the Crime Syndicate’s ruthless plans to take over Earth cause them to do next?

“One of the things that's at the root of it is that they're our world's greatest heroes, but turned inside out. We wanted to present them and explore them in ways that would completely contrast like, say, Green Lantern and Power Ring. What are the differences and what are the similarities? The Crime Syndicate is a great way to explore our heroes through a different lens and say, ‘This is how our world could have been,’” writer Geoff Johns explained. “Throughout the series, in both FOREVER EVIL and the JUSTICE LEAGUE books as well, we'll get to see how the Syndicate formed and why they're here and what they want. And in contrast to the question of how Ultraman and Superman are different – how are they similar? So it's not just a matter of good and evil. It's much more complicated than that. And you're going to see why the laws of nature and the laws of humanity and laws of life are different in this other world that has led to this dark, twisted Justice League.”

As for how artist David Finch approached redesigning the Crime Syndicate for The New 52?

“Honestly, what appealed to me with this project, and what appealed to me with JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, was working with Geoff Johns. That was what I wanted out of it, first and foremost. Being able to draw a whole book full of villains and something as dark as this that goes to the places it does was a huge bonus, obviously. And drawing the Crime Syndicate was a really nice treat. I'm a big fan of Frank Quitely's version that he did a number of years ago [in the graphic novel JLA: Earth 2],” said Finch.

“I think some of the original costumes from years ago are pretty cool, so I wanted to take some elements from both of those, and talking to Geoff especially about who the characters were. No writer I've ever worked with has been more succinct about getting down to what the character's aspect is, and I think that really affected the look of the characters for me.”

Here is some of Finch’s interior art for FOREVER EVIL #2. What is the next step in the Crime Syndicate’s plan for global domination? What have they done with Nightwing? And do the Teen Titans stand a chance against this group of super-villains who have seemingly eradicated their predecessors? Find out when FOREVER EVIL #2 arrives in stores on October 2nd.

GREEN LANTERN #24

First Look: 'Lights Out'

This October, “Lights Out” will span across all of the GREEN LANTERN family titles. In September, Relic’s Villains Month one-shot hit stores and set the stage for this epic crossover event that will change the Green Lantern universe forever.

“There are seven different colors of the emotional spectrum, each of them represented by their own corps. Green Lanterns wear rings powered by will, Red Lanterns rage, Yellow Lanterns fear, and so on,” GREEN LANTERN writer Robert Venditti explained. “For reasons none of the Lanterns are sure of, the rings have been malfunctioning lately. Enter Relic, a remnant of the universe before ours, who thinks he knows what's wrong with the rings and has a solution. Unfortunately, ridding the universe of every last Lantern is part of that solution.”

“The way I describe the story is, it'll tie together every Lantern of every Corps who has ever appeared in any comic book – ever,” Venditti also said about the crossover. “It's an ambitious story, and our editors have been great about letting us take substantial risks with these characters. We're holding nothing back.”

Here is a sneak peek at artist Billy Tan’s mind-blowing interior art for GREEN LANTERN #24, which will kick off “Lights Out” when it lands in stores on October 2nd.

SECOND IT GIRL & THE ATOMICS PAPERBACK COLLECTS THE REST OF BELOVED SERIES

Jamie S. Rich and a cadre of artists top off their acclaimed year-long run on the It Girl and the Atomics series with the second trade paperback collection. It Girl and the Atomics, Round Two: The World is Flat collects issues #7 through #12, drawn by Mike Norton (Revival) and Natalie Nourigat (The Thrilling Adventure Hour), with a special spooktacular appearance by Chynna Clugston Flores. The book will be published by Image Comics on October 2, 2013.

It Girl originally appeared in Michael Allred’s late 1990s comics series The Atomics, and later as a cast member in Madman Atomic Comics. This is her first solo series, as well as the first fully-sanctioned Madman spin-off. It Girl’s superpowers are that she can touch any object and adopt its attributes, becoming “it.”

“I’m extremely proud of the work we did on these comics,” Rich said. “The series garnered what are so far the best reviews of my career, and it’s become the first thing people want to talk to me about when I’m at conventions. Having the whole thing together in two complete books is extremely gratifying. It’s a great way to end the project, and we want to reward our readers by giving them a special package.”

In addition to all the stories from the individual comics, It Girl and the Atomics also has all the cover art by the original creators of It Girl, Madman masterminds Michael and Laura Allred. Bonus content includes brand-new pin-ups by Brian Churilla, Ming Doyle, Megan Levens, George Kambadais, Monica Gallagher, Brennan Wagner, Mike Russell, Christopher Mitten, and pioneering indie cartoonist Matt Wagner (Mage, Grendel). The introduction was written by Eric M. Esquivel, writer of Freelancers for Boom! Studios.

“The support from our friends and colleagues on this one was tremendous,” Rich continued. “I think in a few years time, people will look back at the pin-up gallery and be shocked by what an impressive and varied list of people it is. Lots of up-and-comers in there with the more established professionals.”

It Girl and the Atomics, Round Two: The World is Flat collects six issues, but it’s made up of several shorter stories. “After the first trade paperback’s long, continuous narrative, I wanted to write superhero adventures that were done in one or two issues. Like most soap opera capes-and-cowls comics, there are still bits and pieces that connect them all, but the intention was to allow any new reader to jump in at just about anytime and go along with what we were doing. Really, you can read The World is Flat without ever having glanced at Dark Streets, Snap City and know what’s going on."

It Girl and the Atomics, Round Two: The World is Flat will be released by Image Comics on October 2. It has 168 color pages, retails for $14.99, and sports an all-new cover by Michael & Laura Allred.

“TALES OF BLOOD & COURAGE!”

CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL returns with Dark Horse editor-in-chief

SCOTT ALLIE pulling together an all-star roster of writers and artists to battle censorship with 48 PAGES OF ALL-NEW stories! Tim Seeley brings

Hack/Slash back for what might be the most bizarre tale in the series, and legendary creator Richard Corben tells the story of an underground cartoonist bringing back his most famous (and well-endowed) hero.

Everyone has a story to tell, but what happens when a story gets taken away from its creator? LIBERTY ANNUAL 2013 looks at the creative costs of censorship, either through the sort of outside interference the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has fought for 27 years, or through more private forms. The Hoax Hunters battle a cable news program for the life of sasquatch, a young punk rock journalist examines Pussy Riot, and Masks and Mobsters writer Josh Williamson answers the question, “What If Wertham Were Right?”

All proceeds from this book benefit the important First Amendment work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, who’ve been fighting censorship in comics for over 25 years!

Finally getting to the comic store today. If I see a copy, I might give The Activity a try, as well as all my other picks up there.

Well, my shop didn't have The Activity -- or Grindhouse, the book I was looking forward to most this week!

For that matter, Fables wasn't in my pile, either. Did it actually ship this week?

No, I didn't get Fables this week, either.

I found myself liking Mighty Avengers a lot more than I thought. The same with Forever Evil.

I just read Doctor Who: Prisoners of Time #9 which is my first reading of the Ninth Doctor. He seems a bit ...harsher than the Tenth or Eleventh.

Thanks, Philip.

Of the books I've read so far, I liked Earth 2 okay -- and would have liked it a lot more if I were planning to read the next issue. But The Movement was great -- it's becoming much more complex than it was originally assumed to be -- and Hinterkind is a hell of a good debut. More, please!!

I also picked up the first issue of the crime book Hit, and didn't care for it much. (Odd for me, since noir's pretty much my favorite flavor of fiction!)
