Comics Guide for Aug. 27, 2104

THIS WEEK'S COMICS

Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue).

BEST BETS

For more information on Best Bets titles, consult the Guide below. Titles are grouped by Action Lab, Archie, Dark Horse, DC Comics, Dynamite, IDW, Image, Marvel, Valant and Other Publications.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1.4 (Marvel, $3.99): Marvel has practically made a cottage industry of stories about Spider-Man's first year, but by and large they have been good and help remind us what made this character so fresh, unique and ... well, amazing back in the long-before time. This four-issue series was written Dan Slott, who has done a lot to bring the magic back to the web-swinger in recent years.

BOB'S BURGERS #1 (Dynamite, $3.99): I confess I've never seen the cartoon, but if you have, this might be for you.

DEADPOOL VS. CARNAGE (TPB, Marvel, $16.99): Marvel billed the miniseries collected here as "good crazy vs. bad crazy," although critics of Deadpool's popularity might question which is which. But if you like your humor black, and your hero fruity as a nutcake, this is for you.

FABLES VOL 20 (DC/Vertigo, $19.99): As this excellent series barrels to its finale, they've finally introduced one of the biggest, bestest fables of all: Camelot.

FUSE VOL 1 (Image, $9.99): From the description, this series is Outland (the Sean Connery SF movie based on High Noon) done right.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #18 (Marvel, $3.99): This "Original Sin" tie-in will explain why, several years ago, the original Nova never returned from an adventure in another universe when everyone else involved did. Only Star-Lord (now a household name) and Thanos (soon to be a household name) have known the answer to that question, and with this issue we all will, too.

HARLEY QUINN #10 (DC, $2.99): Harley Quinn has enjoyed a spike a popularity lately, and the goofy fun presented here might be a clue why.

JESSICA JONES: THE PULSE -- THE COMPLETE COLLECTION (TPB, Marvel, $34.99): When Alias the comic book debuted, it was unique. It starred an ex-superheroine who had quit the "business" due to an unexplained trauma (which eventually got explained, and it is creepy), and become a self-loathing, alcoholic private eye specializing in superhero-related cases. Jessica Jones was an unpleasant burnout, but was still relatable enough that she got a second series, The Pulse, in which she became something of a journalist. Why do you care? Because Jessica Jones will be part of the series of series Marvel and Netflix are producing, beginning with Daredevil in March 2015. You might want to get familiar with a character who will soon be invading your TV, desktop, iPad or mobile phone.

KANG & KODOS #1 (Bongo, $3.99): The incompetent, cannibal aliens from The Simpsons get their own special! (Don't let the names fool you, as they are an in-joke reference to two Klingons from the original Star Trek series.)

LADY RAWHIDE (TPB, Dynamite, $19.99): High concept: Female Zorro. Sound good? It is!

POP #1 (of 4, Dark Horse, $3.99): The idea of superheroes as celebrities has been explored before (notably in Peter Milligan's X-cellent X-Statix), but these superheroes aren't born: They're made. In a lab.

THE SECRET SERVICE (HC, Marvel, $24.99): What's more secret than the Mossad, MI-6 and the National Security Agency? It's the Kingsmen, who are a service so secret, and so good, that nobody has ever heard of them. This series is written by fan favorite Mark Millar, and has been turned into a movie coming in 2015 and starring Sam Jackson, Colin Firth, Michael Caine and Mark Hamill.

SHINOBI: NINJA PRINCESS #1 (Action Lab, $3.99): If you're looking for comics for the girls in your family, look no further. This all-ages book stars a 14-year-old ninja-in-training named Shinobi, who promises to be that elusive role model for young girls comics have such trouble producing. Oh, and did I mention she's also a princess?

TUROK DINOSAUR HUNTER VOL 1: CONQUEST (TPB, Dynamite, $16.99): Dynamite has done an excellent job re-imagining the major heroes from the Gold Key line of the 1960s (who have also had publishing stints at Acclaim, Dark Horse and Valiant). Take a look at this modern Turok and see if you agree.

WAYWARD #1 (Image, $3.50): A teenage American girl is transplanted to Japan by her mother, and her feelings of outsider-ness are exaggerated by seeing mythological creatures no one else sees. Soon she's battling these creatures, which is probably why Image describes this as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a new generation." If true, that would be pretty awesome -- plus, we'd learn about Japanese mythology.

Jishin 自信 (Confidence): 14 year-old ninja princess Shianndrea Toshigawa and her strike team  have a new mission: spy on their rivals, the Azumi Ninja Clan, and discover what secret dealings  they have with the evil Emperor of Japan. But when the plan goes awry and fellow ninja Hamasuke  is captured, can Shianndrea overcome her lack of confidence and save him before it’s too late?

Shinobi: Ninja Princess is written, illustrated and created by mastermind Martheus Wade. A prequel to Wade’s most famous creation Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa, Shinobi; Ninja Princess explores her formative years as Shianndrea struggles against her destiny. The all ages action/adventure series takes a manga inspired spin on this classic coming of age story and returns to a universe of warring clans and high adventure.

Wade’s approach is accessible to readers who may cross over from that realm but it manages to stay just light enough to attract the casual reader.  Wade, who’s work has been featured in graphic novels like Mail Order Ninja and The Bad Girls Club for IDW publishing, is joined by his wife and frequent collaborator, Janet Wade (Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa, Turra: Gun Angel)  and features a variant cover by Tressina Bowling (Hateink , Princeless: Short Stories for Warrior Women).

It’s buyer beware when Selina purchases a new house – but Catwoman is much more interested in the treasure that lies beneath the property!

I'm not actually reading this title, but from references in other Bat-books it appears that Selina has set herself up as some sort of kingpin of crime. Doesn't that mean she'll be responsible for deaths, which will change her status quo with the Dark Knight kinda forever? I don't see how it can go any other way, and that would not be a good idea for the character.

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce that Fox's hit animated series, Bob's Burgers, will be coming to comic stores everywhere, and the series will be written, drawn and overseen by the writers, animators and producers of the TV Series! Now you can read about the Belcher family (parents Bob and Linda, and their children Tina, Gene and Louise) in brand-new in-canon stories, appearing exclusively in this comic book series. Bob's Burgers is an animated sitcom that airs on Fox television with other hits such as The Simpsons and Family Guy!

The very first issue of the Bob's Burgers comic book includes hilarious installments of: "Louise's Unsolved Mysteries," "Tina's Erotic Friend Fiction," "A Gene Belcher Original Musical," "Letters Written by Linda" and "Bob's Burgers of the Day."

"If you like Bob's Burgers and you like comic books then you may feel like you're living in one of the greatest times in human history because Bob's Burgers and comic books are coming together in the form of the Bob's Burgers comic book. But of course we could really mess it up. Then you'd feel like you were living in one of the worst times in human history. Either way, we hope you'll check out the first few issues. We tried to make something that's true to the show and true to the form without being a sad knock-off of either." -- Loren Bouchard, The creator of Bob's Burgers

"When we announced Bob's Burgers at San Diego Comic-Con last July -- and the fact that Loren and his entire team would be involved in every detail of production -- the response was huge," says Dynamite CEO/Publisher Nick Barrucci.  "And the results are fantastic -- the creative team over at Bento Box Entertainment has put together some incredible stories and artwork, perfectly suited for the comic book format.  We're grateful for their dedicated involvement, and eagerly anticipate that the Belcher family's comic book shenanigans will draw in fans from outside of the direct market."

Following in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed Wallace Wood: Woodworks and Big John Buscema museum catalogs comes Flesh & Steel: The Art of Russ Heath. As with those first two books, this is an art catalog of a single artist's extraordinary body of work, following Heath from his very earliest days as an artist to the present, and featuring a cornucopia of rare and never-before-seen-art, many from Heath's personal archives. His early days at Atlas, EC, DC, Warren, National Lampoon and Marvel are all showcased. Intricalely researched, with a complete index of his work is presented, this is a masterful book focusing on a masterful artist! Text is in both English and Spanish.

Published in the U.S. for the first time!

I don't really know when this is being published -- or if it has already been published. The only firm date I have is Aug. 26, when it hits bookstores. Otherwise it's a mish-mash of dates as IDW has hop-scotched it across various shipping lists. The Previews site lists two different dates in two different places, so that's no help.

Anyway, I wanted to make sure I run it, because Russ Heath was one of my favorites growing up. His soldiers looked dirty and war-weary, his spotting of blacks was so good it was educational, his women were gorgeous and his machines of war, especially, were worth gazing at for long periods of time. I'm glad to see he's getting some love.

    $3.50

John Layman and Rob Guillory’s new CHEW spinoff one-shot WARRIOR CHICKEN POYO boasted a foil exclusive at San Diego Comic-Con last week and fans of CHEW flocked to the booth for the issue. WARRIOR CHICKEN POYO’s ending shocked long-time CHEW fans and pulled in new readers with fun pop culture references. The issue has sold out and has a second printing with a new cover by Rob Guillory already in flight.

In this issue, the heroic, world-saving warrior chicken Poyo is plucked from the world of CHEW and dropped into the magical kingdom of Yoek, a land that is home to characters that are strikingly similar to classic fantasy literature. Unfortunately, Yoek is also newly plagued with an evil Groceryomancer bent on destroying the kingdom with, well, angry sword-wielding, asparagus-spear-throwing vegetables, fruits, tubers, and legumes. The fate of the kingdom rests on the brave and noble warrior chicken Poyo’s shoulders.

"Poyo is the ultimate bad-ass, and so is everybody who picked up the first printing of Warrior Chicken Poyo,” said Layman. “But, in an effort to make the world less pathetic and lame, we're giving even more people a chance to prove their supreme awesomeness with an opportunity to pick up what's probably the best comic book in the entire history of mankind, if not the universe!"

Man, these guys love their language puns.

“Whether you're a fan of things that go bump in the night or just someone who likes good comics, you can't do much better than Outcast.” -- IGN

On track to match the worldwide success of THE WALKING DEAD, the second issue of Skybound/Image Comics’ OUTCAST BY ROBERT KIRKMAN & PAUL AZACETA has sold out completely and is slated for a second printing. The first new series written by Kirkman himself in years, this demonic possession-focused horror comic builds on the mystery and mounting terror in its second issue and has hooked fans of classic horror and the entertainment phenomenon THE WALKING DEAD. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER FOR A NEW GENERATION!

Writer Jim Zub (SKULLKICKERS, Samurai Jack) teams up with penciler Steve Cummings (Legends of the Dark Knight, Deadshot) and color artist John Rauch (INVINCIBLE) to create a Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a new generation in WAYWARD, coming from Image Comics in August.

Rori Lane is an outsider by nature, but moving to Tokyo to live with her single Mom has only exacerbated her weirdness. She's feeling out of sorts, worried about fitting in and, as if that wasn’t enough, strange things are beginning to happen. Glowing symbols and patterns are starting to appear before her eyes … and she's the only one who seems to notice.

"Wayward is a coming-of-age story filled with mystery and emotion. It's also an ass-kicking joy ride with teenagers beating the hell out of Japanese mythological monsters,” said Zub. “Steve and I built this series from the ground up to play to both our strengths. I can't wait for people to see what we have planned.”

In WAYWARD a group of teens living in Tokyo find a common bond in manifesting strange, supernatural abilities. As they begin to unravel the mystery behind their powers and their common source they're drawn into a war with the vestiges of Japan’s monstrous mythic past.

    WHITE DEATH (HC)

    WhiteDeath_HC.jpg?width=250Story: ROBBIE MORRISON

    Art / Cover: CHARLIE ADLARD

    SEPTEMBER 3 / 104 PAGES / BW / T+ / $14.99

In 1916, Pietro Aquasanta, an Italian rifleman, returns to his childhood home of the Trentino mountain range to find that it's no longer the realm of wonder and adventure he remembers, but has become a place of death and despair, where the elements are as great a threat as the enemy.

No weapon of war was more feared than the White Death, thundering avalanches deliberately caused by cannon fire which consumed everything in their path.

"On a sunlit day in September 2013, 500 people attended a double funeral in the small alpine ski resort village of Peio, northern Italy. The bodies were those of two Austrian males, aged 17 and 18 years old. They weren’t, however, holiday-makers who had fallen victim to a tragic ski accident. Both had bullet-holes in their skulls and had been frozen in the snow and ice of the Presana glacier for almost 100 years. They were First World War soldiers who had fought in a relatively obscure part of that conflict, now known as the White War.” -- From the introduction to WHITE DEATH

Image Comics is pleased to announce the September release of WHITE DEATH, a hardcover graphic novel by Robbie Morrison (2000 AD) and Charlie Adlard (THE WALKING DEAD). Set in the Trentino mountain range, WHITE DEATH follows Pietro Aquasanta, who, as a rifleman in the Italian army, returns to what was a realm of wonder adventure in his childhood during World War I, but has now become a sterile world of death and despair.

“‘White Death’ is a slang term used to describe avalanches in French and Italian Alpine regions,” wrote Morrison in his introduction, “and in my head, the avalanche became a metaphor for war -- a terrifying, irresistible force that remorselessly consumes and destroys everything in its path.”

Heightening the tone of isolation and destruction is Adlard’s art -- smudged and scratchy black charcoal and white chalk on a stark gray background that depicts the horrors of trench warfare and hand-to-hand combat. WHITE DEATH pre-dates Adlard’s arrival on the comics phenomenon THE WALKING DEAD, but his work on it informed the direction of his career.

“I could do my OWN thing,” Adlard wrote in his introduction. “This, to me at the time, was a revelation. I hadn't been aware very much of the concept of creator-owned comics and, yet, here I was, doing just that. White Death eventually formulated my world view and opinions on where I wanted my career to go after this.”

How did Star-Lord and Thanos escape their hellish imprisonment?  And most importantly, why did they lie about it?

“Not only does this reveal answer a question for die-hard readers, it also tells something about the character to newer readers,” continued Bendis.

“This is a story Brian Bendis has been dying to tell for several years,” says Executive Editor Mike Marts. ”Now that time is finally here and we can’t wait for readers to find out what happened to Richard Rider!”

Valiant First begins in force with an all-new vision of the future in Rai #1 from comics superstars Matt Kindt and Clayton Crain! The year is 4001 A.D. Led by the artificial intelligence called "Father," the island nation of Japan has expanded out of the Pacific and into geosynchronous orbit with the ravaged Earth below. With billions to feed and protect, it has fallen to one solitary guardian to enforce the law of Father's empire -- the mysterious folk hero known as Rai. They say he can appear out of nowhere. They say he is a spirit ... the ghost of Japan. But when the first murder in a thousand years threatens to topple Father's benevolent reign, Rai will be forced to confront the true face of a nation transformed ... and his own long-lost humanity.

Valiant is proud to announce that all printings of RAI #1 – the red-hot launch book of the VALIANT FIRST initiative by New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt (THE VALIANT, Mind MGMT) and superstar artist Clayton Crain (Carnage) – and RAI #3 have again sold out at the distributor level, and will soon return to store shelves with new printings and covers featuring the stunning interior artwork of Clayton Crain.

Look for the RAI #1 FOURTH PRINTING VARIANT and RAI #3 SECOND PRINTING VARIANT to arrive in stores on August 27th, the same day as RAI #4 – a brand new installment of the astonishing new ongoing series that Comic Book Resources calls "an immersive experience…unlike anything in comics today."

"The critical praise and retail demand for RAI is only continuing to mount, and the first issue has now matched X-O MANOWAR #1 in terms of sell-outs and reprintings," said Valiant Publisher Fred Pierce. "That's a major milestone, and Matt Kindt and Clayton Crain have delivered a story truly worthy of it on every level. With RAI's second story arc set to begin in December, the future couldn't be brighter for RAI."

In 4001 A.D., as the nation of Japan soars above the Earth, Rai is to about unravel the mystery of the first murder in a thousand years…and discover his own profound connection to the crime. Everything Rai knows — about his existence, about his country, and about the benevolent Father he serves — is about to be thrown out of orbit.

Do not miss the next shocking chapter of this comics masterwork in the making on August 27th as all-star creators Matt Kindt and Clayton Crain deliver RAI #4 into comics shops everywhere – right alongside the RAI #1 FOURTH PRINTING VARIANT and RAI #3 SECOND PRINTING VARIANT!

Then, be here on December 10th as Matt Kindt and Clayton Crain return for an all-new story beginning in RAI #5!
