THE CAPTAIN'S PICKS

BATGIRL #26

Written by GAIL SIMONE

Art and cover by FERNANDO PASARIN and JONATHAN GLAPION

Cover by ALEX GARNER

32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

The shocking conclusion of “Batgirl: Wanted”! Can Barbara save her father’s life without compromising the truth about her brother’s death?

This cover immediately made me think of the Neal Adams cover shown below.

 photo spoiler-1.gif

In that 1972 comic book, Batgirl revealed her secret ID to her father, Commissioner Gordon -- who revealed that he already knew it! (Hey, he's the commissioner of police, a former detective -- and not stupid.) IIRC, the establishment of that fact did little to impact on the Batgirl strip, although the character did retire in the 1988 Batgirl Special #1 -- the same year as Batman: The Killing Joke, which overshadowed the Special, meaning few remember the retirement.

Anyway, I don't know if this issue will end with the commissioner aware that his daughter is Batgirl, and even if he does know, will he still blame her for the (supposed) death of his son? Simone has been building up to this, and I have a lot of confidence in her as a writer, so this may be the real deal.

Or not. I guess I'll have to read it and see!

CAPTAIN MARVEL #17 2ND PTG

(W) Kelly Sue DeConnick (A) Filipe Andrade (CA) Adrian Alphona

From Marvel Comics. The Carol Corps Issue! The special oversized issue to end all oversized issues! In the aftermath of Enemy Within, Carol Danvers must rebuild her memories through the eyes of her biggest fan. Find out why this is such a fan-beloved series!

This issue sold out because it includes the first appearance of the new Muslim Ms. Marvel. It's only a cameo, though, so you don't really have to have it, even if you're interested in the character. But it is sort-of historic, so there you go.

DOC SAVAGE #1

Publisher: DYNAMIC FORCES

(W) Chris Roberson (A) Bilquis Evely (CA) Alex Ross

In 1933, readers were first introduced to Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze. Raised from the cradle to be the pinnacle of mental and physical perfection, Doc Savage travels the world using science and sinews to right wrongs, aid the oppressed, and liberate the innocent. Whether with his team of able associates at their headquarters high atop the tallest building in the world, Doc Savage is tireless in his pursuit of knowledge and justice.

$3.99

When it comes to pulp heroes I've always been a bigger Shadow fan, and Superman stole a lot of Doc Savage's thunder, but Doc's still a seminal character. I'll be on board for this iteration, as I have been for all the others.

HALO: ESCALATION #1

RICHARD STARK'S PARKER SLAYGROUND HC

(W/A/CA) Darwyn Cooke

Darwyn Cooke's masterful and multi award-winning series of PARKER graphic novels continues with Slayground! Parker, whose getaway car crashes after a heist, manages to elude capture with his loot by breaking into an amusement park that is closed for the winter. But his presence does not go unnoticed-a pair of cops observed the job and its aftermath. But rather than pursue their suspect... they decide to go into business for themselves, with the help of some "business associates." From then on it's a game of cat and mouse, one played out through closed rides of the abandoned carnival... a game that slowly starts to favor the mouse.

$17.99

I've really been enjoying this series, even though Parker is usually the kind of protagonist I don't like. But nobody handles the '50s and early '60s like Cooke, and noir is in his wheelhouse too, so this is tailor-made for him.

Meanwhile, IDW sent out some news on Parker:

IDW Publishing announced this morning its plan to expand their relationship with Darwyn Cooke and the Estate of Donald E. Westlake to include illustrated Parker novels. Cooke, who will continue producing his award-winning Parker graphic novel series for IDW, will now also illustrate Westlake's ground-breaking crime novels. For the first time, the Parker novels will be published in a deluxe, hardcover format, and with Cooke designing the series, as well as providing stunning color illustrations to accompany Westlake's (AKA, Richard Stark's) crime classics! The first book, The Hunter, will arrive in the first half of 2014. Additional editions will be released in chronological order thereafter.

"The Parker novels written by Donald Westlake had a profound effect on me as a young man," said Darwyn Cooke, "to first be able to adapt them in graphic novel form, and now to illustrate his prose as well… for me, it just doesn't get much better than this."

Darwyn Cooke and IDW Publishing have released three Parker graphic novels to date, with the trio winning multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards. The fourth graphic novel, Richard Stark's Parker: Slayground, will be released in December.

Richard Stark was the most famous pseudonym of world-renowned author Donald E. Westlake. In 1962 he created the master thief Parker and began a series of novels that have been recognized as seminal works in crime fiction. Several of Westlake's books have been adapted by Hollywood, including PARKER earlier this year. He has won numerous awards for his fiction, including being named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, that prestigious society's highest honor.

STAR TREK ANNUAL 2013

(W/A/CA) John Byrne

A special extra-length, one-of-a-kind "fotonovel" sequel to a beloved classic! Years ago, James Kirk saved his ship, but the price was the life of his oldest friend in Starfleet-or was it? The crew of the starship ENTERPRISE faces a staggering discovery in a brand-new "episode" of the original STAR TREK.

I think we used to call this "fumetti," and I don't think I've ever actually enjoyed one. But it's a weird experiment, and it's by John Byrne, so I'll probably pick it up just to see if it works.

Meanwhile, here's more info from IDW:

John Byrne is no stranger to breaking new ground and he is doing it again with the extra-length Star Trek Annual 2013, arriving this December from IDW.

Byrne returns to the Star Trek universe in an entirely unexpected way—for this annual, he has created a completely original Star Trek story that plays out like a “lost episode,” using a uniquely constructed photomontage to create an entirely new story. “Strange New Worlds” serves as a direct sequel to the fan-favorite episode, “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” which aired as the third episode of Star Trek’s first season in 1966.

"There was a visual richness to that second pilot that really drew me in," said writer/artist John Byrne, "and since I have long wanted to experiment with something like this project, that episode seemed the perfect choice for a sequel."

Years ago, James Kirk saved his ship, but the price was the life of his oldest friend in Starfleet—or was it? Fans will see Gary Mitchell’s story take a surprising turn in this story. But the uniqueness of this project does not end with the plotline; rather, it continues with the photomontage art form that Byrne has chosen to tell this original story. Star Trek photonovels, in which a book was created by adapting a film or television episode using actual film stills in place of traditional artwork, with narrative text and dialogue presented in word balloons, were popular in the late 1970s. But this is where the past becomes the future—Byrne didn’t just insert film stills, he created them. In order to tell a new Star Trek story in this “fumetti” style, he did much more than pluck existing images, instead compositing together multiple pieces of film stills and manipulating them to tell the exact story he wanted.

“This project started out as just a fun diversion for John in between other projects,” said Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall, “and as is wont to happen with JB, it continued to grow and become something much bigger than his original intent. It’s a blast to see an ‘all-new’ original series episode done this way. Byrne has produced over 500 pages of Star Trek comics for us already, but I can promise readers that they’ve never seen this kind of Star Trek comic from him before.”

Star Trek Annual 2013, a 48-page issue, is under license by CBS Consumer Products.

“Wrestling fans are used to looking forward to Mondays and Fridays,” explained Super Genius Publisher Terry Nantier. “Now they have another day of the week to get excited about. We’re working closely with the WWE to ensure that these new comics tie in closely with the WWE storylines and the spirit of the franchise. These definitely aren’t your dad’s wrestling comics!”

And it’s great to see that passion expressed in things like WWE-dnesday. I’m looking forward to seeing fans talking about ‘capes and costumes’ at one end of the comics rack and arguing about ‘heels and faces’ further down the aisle. It’s going to make for an exciting day on December 11th and plenty of other Wednesdays in the months to come!”

FC, 32 pages, $3.50

Ongoing

Abe dives into a horrific cavern believed to be a portal to the Mayan version of Hell!

• Ties in to Hellboy in Mexico!

• A complete story in one issue—a perfect jumping-on point for the ongoing series!

“Ah . . . feel that? That’s the breath of fresh air that is Abe Sapien.”—iFanboy

ABE SAPIEN VOLUME 3: DARK & TERRIBLE & THE NEW RACE OF MAN TP

On the run at the End of the World!

Mike Mignola (W/Cover), Scott Allie (W), John Arcudi (W), Sebastian Fiumara (A), Max Fiumara (A), and Dave Stewart (C)

FC, 144 pages, $19.99

TP, 7” x 10”

On the run from the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, a mutated Abe Sapien faces horrifying monsters, desperate madmen, and cities in ruin, on his quest to reveal his own role in the end of the world. Collects Abe Sapien #1–#5.

• The beginning of the new ongoing series!

“Fiumara’s art is gorgeous.”—Comic Book Resources

To tell you the truth, when Mike Mignola introduced Abe Sapien as one of the first three extra-human B.P.R.D. operatives (the other two being Hellboy and Liz Sherman), I was a bit disappointed. A water character? Didn't years of Aquaman being useless in the Justice League and Aqualad being useless in the Teen Titans teach him anything?

But that shows why Mike Mignola is a famous, successful comic-book creator guy and I am just another idiot. Sure enough, Sapien's water-based abilities (swims fast, breathes water) aren't very useful. But Mignola & Co. have developed Abe's personality to where he's the backbone of the B.P.R.D. and often the most interesting -- and usually the most admirable -- member of the whole cast.

Needless to say, I've got this on order.

BRAIN BOY #0

The Secret Service’s top agent knows EXACTLY what you’re thinking!

Fred Van Lente (W), Freddie Williams II (P), Ego (C), and Ariel Olivetti (Cover)

FC, 32 pages, $2.99

One-shot

When the United States Secret Service needs to make sure a location is safe for the president, they call Matt Price, a.k.a. Brain Boy, the world’s most powerful telepath. Raised by his parents’ employer after their deaths, Matt studied and honed his incredible psychic abilities under the tutelage of Albright Industries. Jump back in time to one of Brain Boy’s first missions with this #0 issue. He may have a powerful mind, but he’s in over his head! Collects the Brain Boy run from Dark Horse Presents!

• Fred Van Lente (Archer & Armstrong) and Freddie Williams II (Green Arrow, Captain Atom) team up!

• A great jumping-on point for new readers!

I keep meaning to sample this, but I keep forgetting because I don't really have very high hopes. Brain Boy's provenance isn't very encouraging: He started as a mediocre and short-lived character at Dell in the early 1960s, and his powers -- telekinesis, telepathy -- aren't exactly unexplored in comics. But, hey, if Abe Sapien can be interesting, maybe this guy can be, too. Anyone reading it? This looks like a good jumping-on point.

ASTRO CITY #7

Cover by ALEX ROSS

40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T

A major new 4-part epic begins featuring Winged Victory, Samaritan and the Confessor, three of Astro City’s most popular heroes. It begins when a young boy seeks sanctuary and training at Winged Victory’s school for battered women—and builds to revelations, accusations and a threat that may spell the end of her heroic career. Plus: Winged Victory’s origin is revealed at last.

Is it just impossible to create a superhero universe without Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman analogues? Seems so. But as we like to say around here, there aren't any bad characters, only bad writers. And since the writer here is Kurt Busiek, Confessor, Samaritan and Winged Victory will be awesome.

And who (or what) brought them there? Get ready for a dose of wonder from the writing team of Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis!

Strange. The comics press reported that Giffen and DeMatteis were fired off this book, and then it was delayed -- presumably to bring in another creative team to do whatever it was that DC wanted that Giffen & DeMatteis hadn't provided. But here it is, really late, but with the same writers listed. Curious.

In “Without Sin,” when the disfigured body of a priest is uncovered at a Gotham City demolition site, all clues lead Batman to suspect one of his old foes. But in Gotham City, not everything is as it appears. Plus: In “Dr. Quinn’s Diagnosis,” Batman interrogates Harley Quinn, who might reveal her puddin’s secrets…if Batman agrees to one strange demand.

Is digital-first the wave of the future? That's the way newspapers are going, but comic books aren't newspapers. My Magic 8-Ball says "Answer Unclear. Ask Again Later." Stupid 8-Ball.

NIGHTWING #26

Written by KYLE HIGGINS

Art and cover by WILL CONRAD

32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

With the events of FOREVER EVIL looming, Nightwing enters the final stages of life as he knows it!

It's unlikely that DC will kill off Nightwing, given how fan outrage forced Dan DiDio to shelve those plans once. So the line reading "final stages of life as he knows it" could and probably does refer to a new status quo with his identity revealed.

To tell you the truth, I never found Dick Grayson very compelling as Nightwing. I know, I know: heresy. But he was the most redundant of the Bat-family, and fought with sticks. Really nice sticks, sure, but sticks. Maybe this will make him more interesting to me.

But the idea that Grayson's identity being revealed doesn't immediately unmask Batman -- and all the rest of the crew -- really stretches my credulity. I'm curious to see how they'll address that.

    $3.99

San Diego, CA (November 15, 2013) – Darby Pop Publishing in partnership with IDW launches the first in its new line of all-original comic books this December with the release of the satiric superhero tale, Indestructible.

Indestructible is the story of a not-so-heroic slacker, Greg Pincus who when he finds himself in the wrong place at the right time, thwarts a robbery with what the general public believes to be “superpowers.”

This ongoing series will explore the pitfalls of celebrity, and examine just how far an “average Joe” will go to maintain his (potentially lethal) fame and the perks that come with it.

Indestructible #1 is written by Jeff Kline, penciled by Javi Garron, inked by Salvi Garcia and colored by Alejandro Sanchez. Jose Lopez is providing the main cover, with Bernard Chang providing a special subscription variant cover.

Jeff Kline has been responsible for more than 40 animated and live-action television series and pilots including Transformers Prime, and G.I. Joe: Renegades. His passion for storytelling also led him to found Darby Pop Publishing in early 2013.

I know nothing about this. But clearly IDW has high hopes for it, so it's worth checking out.

    ALEX + ADA #1 2ND PTG

1936158436?profile=RESIZE_180x180(W) Jonathan Luna, Sarah Vaughn (A/CA) Jonathan Luna

From JONATHAN LUNA (GIRLS, THE SWORD, Spider-Woman, ULTRA) and SARAH VAUGHN (Sparkshooter) comes ALEX + ADA, a sci-fi drama set in the near future. The last thing in the world Alex wanted was an X5, the latest in realistic androids. But when Ada is dropped into his life, will Alex keep her?

The first issue sold out at the distributor level. In light of its success, ALEX + ADA has been expanded from 12 issues to a 15-issue series.

Praise for ALEX + ADA #1:

“I'm hard pressed to imagine a reader that wouldn't be intrigued enough to come back for issue two to see exactly where Luna and Vaughn plan to take this story. On the whole Alex + Ada #1 is simply an excellent start to an exciting new book.” --Kelly Thompson, Comic Book Resources

“Luna and Vaughan have taken what could have been a derivative story about androids and the humans who love them and turned it into a promising debut.” --Melissa Grey, IGN

    $2.99

The first issue was all set up, and it's a pretty good set-up. In the near future, Alex is an anal-retentive young man (his apartment ridiculously clean and ordered, which I'm guessing is a plot point) who broke up with the love of his life seven months ago, and his friends and family are all worried that he hasn't been able to move on. Enter Ada, a Life Model Decoy android girl, given to him as a gift. It's been established that he thinks the whole idea of android lovers is gross, so I'm guessing the series will be about him getting past that idea (or there won't be much of a series).

Anyway, it's by Jonathan Luna, whose work I have mostly enjoyed, although his art is a bit sterile. There are some throwaway bits here that are interesting, like how at Alex's party there are virtually no romantic couples portrayed that are both hetero and of the same race. It's all a mixed bag, and come to think of it, that may be a plot point, too. I mean, if mixed race and non-heterosexual couples are the norm, that would imply that human/android pairs would have few if any social barriers in the way. The only impediment would be, of course, Alex's reluctance. Or, in this world, would that be considered bigotry?

Hmmm. I suppose I'll need to read a bit more to find out!

    SERIES FINALE!

As The Darkness virus becomes a citywide epidemic, the Old Gods run rampant. What will it take for Jackie Estacado to reclaim the Darkness from his nefarious Doppelganger?

    $3.99

According to the solicits, The Darkness ends here as a series, to be followed by an OGN (original graphic novel) titled The Darkness: The Death of Jackie Estacado.

That sounds pretty final, but a miniseries will follow that will set up a new status quo for the Top Cow superhero universe. Well, I'm assuming that's what it'll do, given that the current one was set up by Jackie Estacado, whose future doesn't look terribly bright.

Maybe soon I won't have to type "Estacado" any more! (I always have to look up the spelling.)

Revenge fantasies are a dime a dozen in comics, but Image has really been on a roll lately, so I'll check this one out.

1936202855?profile=RESIZE_180x180Warning: things are about to get very strange—even for paranormal detective Drum Hellar. When Hellar starts experiencing shock-induced visions, he’s compelled to pay a visit to a small town in South Dakota. But what he’s met with is not your usual South Dakotan. Flesh-eating bog-men, ex-girlfriend werewolves, and a psychedelic-stealing demon abound in this wonderfully weird new series from creators Alex Link and Riley Rossmo (WILD CHILDREN and COWBOY NINJA VIKING).

DRUMHELLAR #1 sold out at the distributor level and went back to press for a second printing to meet demand. Rave reviews include:

“Drumhellar proves that comics can do things other mediums can't. It crosses multiple genres in a spacious world that teems with imagination and care from the creators. I have no idea where Link and Rossmo are going to take us, but you can bet I’ll be along for the ride.” — Lonmonster, Bloody Disgusting

“Drumhellar #1 doesn’t disappoint, especially not to fans of Rossmo. It’s a strange, winding story with a cast quite unlike any other. The well-placed jokes and comedic situations only make it even better. Definitely worth a read.” — Leo Johnson, NerdSpan

“Rossmo’s art, as with anything he does, shines the brightest because he really lets himself go and just does the story the way he wants it. From his cleaner lines in the more normal scenes, to the uber colorful and crazy out of body experience that Drum has towards the end of the book, this book is Rossmo at his finest.” — Tyler Goulet, All-Comic.com

“This is one you can read a couple of times and get something new out of it. Well done guys, well done.” — James Anders II, Comic Bastards

“Alex and Riley have penned a funny and engaging mystery that rapidly opens up and pulls you in.” — Hansel Moreno, The Weekly Crisis

The first issue was full of interesting things, but not enough for me to have even the slightest idea what's going on.

Is that a review? Well, if not, then try this: "The story is really out there and could be interesting, a mash-up of soap opera and peyote dreams, but I'm not a big fan of the art style, which is cartoonish, which is OK, but not very polished, which isn't."

I'll be there for the next issue, below, to see if any of this makes any sense!

    Art / cover DEAN KOTZ

    32 PAGES / FC / T+ / $2.99

The only thing chillier than a Christmas Day blizzard is a visit from Krampus, the child-punishing demon of holiday lore. But when The Secret Society of Santa Clauses discovers their powers have been stolen, there’s no one else to turn to for help but their worst enemy.

Brian Joines and Dean Kotz team up to add a frosty touch to the festive season with their spin on Old Saint Nick and his demon counterpart, Krampus. In KRAMPUS!, a new monthly ongoing series, Father Christmas, Ded Moroz, Hoteiosho, and the rest of The Secret Society of Santa Clauses must rely on Krampus’ help or risk not being able to deliver gifts on time.

Writer Brian Joines was inspired by the one-on-one relationship that the Krampus figure has always had with Santa. “I liked the idea of the Krampus beholden to an organization greater than he was, something that lent itself to the portrayal of the Krampus as a put-upon protagonist," Joines explained. “Given that Santa has so many names around the globe, I thought it would be fun to make each name an individual working that particular territory. It shakes the paradigm up a bit.”

Joines puts a dark twist on Christmas and chooses to reimagine a long-forgotten demonic character from traditional tales. “I've always had a darker sense of humor and liked the idea that all the stories and legends we knew as kids had darker underbellies… like the Grimm's Fairy Tales,” said Joines. “When I found out that there was this demonic thing that used to ride around with Santa and punish wicked children… I knew I had to do something with that someday. It took a while to figure out how to use him, but once I did, the Krampus wrote himself.”

KRAMPUS! is a darkly comedic adventure series launching just in time for the holidays and for fans of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! It is sure to boost any reader’s Yuletide cheer, all year long.

Krampus is a real thing, a Feast of St. Stephen-cum-Christmas figure who stuffs bad kids in a bag and carries them off in German-speaking parts of Europe. That's about all I know about him from the photographs we run in the newspaper every year.

He is not to be confused with Black Pete (or Petes), who accompany Sinterklaas in the Netherlands, some former Dutch colonies and parts of Spain (long story), and listen down chimneys to identify bad children. Although, for all I know, they're related.

It's well worth a read. Trust me.” --Jeremy James, Geeked Out Nation

The first issue was a delight, quickly sketching in the particulars of the series, getting our heroes on the move, setting up some potential betrayals in the future and offering the first attack on the Lewis & Clark Expedition that has nothing to do with the natural order. And I liked the art. Excellent!

The plot sickens as Michael and Kara descend into some dark, DARK places together all in the name of discovering the truth behind Carlyle White's death. The only truth they're going to find is that some hungers never go away. Meanwhile, Guy finds himself between a rock and a hard place as his secret threatens to sneak out. It's sex, death, and live TV the way YOU demanded it from this summer's dark noir smash.

I recently read issues #2-5. Since I missed the first issue I feel a tiny bit lost, but I was able to follow the gist, I think.

The upshot is that Matt Fraction is doing a good job aping a typical Howard Chaykin story -- except, for a change, all the sex and naughty lingerie are important to the plot. And the lead character isn't a dashing, cynical, extremely well endowed Jewish man in his twenties.

In fact, there really isn't a lead character as such, since all the intrigue and plotting and events center around the character the book is named for, who is dead. Or maybe it's named for his television show, which isn't dead, but is in trouble.

Either way, I was only mildly intrigued. I'll probably read the first trade and make up my mind then if this is worth pursuing.

A PRE-APOCALYPTIC TALE OF SURVIVAL AT ANY COST.

In a pre-apocalyptic world where any day could be humanity’s last, the youth of Safe Haven make a decision based on self-preservation. With limited resources and the end of the world swiftly approaching, the kids band together to kill off their parents and take society into their own hands. The first five issues of Ed Brisson (COMEBACK, Secret Avengers) and Johnnie Christmas's (Continuum: The War Files) SHELTERED, an unnerving series about what happens when logistics of survival trump empathy, will be collected in trade paperback form on December 11.

    Praise for SHELTERED:

"Sheltered #1 is a solid debut, one that should have readers back next month for the next installment. I'll definitely come back for more.” -- Greg McElhatton, Comic Book Resources

“Sheltered #1 begins to prove its true worth when it tears away from the obvious comparisons and the starting-point premise that has been well-tread in modern science fiction and horror.” -- Vince Ostrowski, Multiversity Comics

“Depending how they handle things, this could easily turn into the epic that The Walking Dead has in a post-apocalyptic setting.” -- Stuart Conover, ScienceFiction.com

“With its startling conclusion and inventive set-up, the team behind Sheltered is off to a stellar start. It's getting harder and harder to put a fresh spin on end-of-the-world narratives, but Brisson and Christmas have made it look easy.” -- Melissa Grey, IGN

“It's rare when a new comic book series can surprise you… Sheltered starts off with a different take on the survival stories we've seen many times. If that wasn't enough, Ed Brisson completely pulls the rug out from underneath your feet. Getting something new and different is such a treat.” --Tony Guerrero, Comic Vine

“Sheltered #1 leaves readers with a surprising twist at the last page. I can't wait to see what happens in the second issue.” --Jorge Solis, Bloody Disgusting

“Sheltered is a gut check. Brisson and Christmas have decided to come out swinging. A great read.” --Iann Robinson, Crave Online

The first volume of SHELTERED collects issues 1-5 of the series for $9.99.

If you found yourself condemned in such a fashion, a few short years after all of Sparta's men ran, the hypocrisy could bite. Discover why it's not just the helots who suffer under Spartan Law, and discover what a Trembler plans for the three slaves responsible for his shame...

I was impressed with the first two issues, not just as a good comic book, but as one that uses actual true historical stuff as the basis for that story. And that's possible mainly because, wow, those Spartans had a bizarre society! You don't have to make stuff up when the reality is so rife with potential conflict and drama.

I'm glad to see a major publisher reprinting some higher numbers of their long-running titles. I'm as big a fan of the Silver Age as you'll find, but those books have been reprinted to death. And I own all the Bronze Age stuff, (and later) too, but a whole lot of fans don't. So I'm glad to see books like this exist, even if the material found therein isn't terribly interesting or memorable. It's history and deserves to be accessible.

This seems like little more than soft-core porn to me, but I may just not be the right audience for this type of humor.

Fearless Dawn: Jurassic Jungle Boogie Nights #1 received a "STAFF PICKS" and CERTIFIED COOL" from the Diamond Comics Previews catalog and PreviewsWorld website.

“Steve Mannion’s Fearless Dawn has been working her way back into the spotlight this year. If you have ever seen the TV show Venture Bros. on Adult Swim then you’ll feel right at home with Fearless Dawn. The book’s villains are just as quirky and over the top as the Monarch or Phantom Limb from Venture Bros. but the real focus is on our alluring fighter heroine. Mannion’s art has also been showcased in Detective Comics, Batman Black & White, and Captain America Sentinel of Liberty. In Fearless Dawn his stylish artwork lends Dawn her sex appeal and brings a lot of humor to the title.

In May's PREVIEWS we were treated to Fearless Dawn in Outer Space, pitting our heroine against an army of Space Nazis and now we’re getting a second helping with Fearless Dawn: Jurassic Jungle Boogie Nights #1. After the events of Fearless Dawn in Outer Space, the Nazis are settled in back on Earth, and it is going to be up to Fearless Dawn to take the fight to them. Will Dawn be able to put a stop her archenemy Helga Von Krause and her army of genetically engineered dinosaurs from rampaging across the Earth?”

Check out this new mini-series based on the hit NBC show! Follow Portland Detective Nick Burkhardt on his adventures as a cop and as a monster-hunting Grimm. Nick and his partner Hank have to put the stop to a fixed basketball game that will keep the hometown team out of the playoffs. But the stakes are even higher when Nick finds the dangerous Wesen at the heart of the case.

    $3.99

I've never seen this TV show, even though TV shows and movies based on fairy tales are getting a little thick on the ground, aren't they?

Anyway, Dynamite sent out a press release on this one:

Dynamite proudly announces the upcoming Grimm: The Warlock comic book series, based on the hit NBC television show and licensed from NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products. Set within Grimm continuity, this new five-issue miniseries is written by Jai Nitz, the acclaimed author of Dream Thief and Bram Stoker Award winner. Featuring artwork by José Malaga (Dark Shadows/Vampirella), Grimm: The Warlock launches with a first issue featuring cover artwork by Greg Smallwood (Dream Thief).

"I am a huge fan of the monster-hunter sub-genre of fiction and wanted to be involved with the Grimm comic," says writer Jai Nitz. "Every character on Grimm is so well defined. They have their limits and their hesitations just like anyone would. It would be a huge mistake for the show to be a monster-hunter-kicking-ass show; it only works when the main hunter and the main prey are both developed as characters. Otherwise, we wouldn't care if anyone kills, gets killed, or changes in any meaningful way. The characters appeal to me because they seem human, even when they're monsters."

In the new Grimm: The Warlock miniseries, an investigation by homicide detectives Nick Burkhardt and Hank Griffin leads to a fixed basketball game, one that -- once revealed -- keeps Portland's team out of the playoffs. As tensions rise from wounded hometown pride, Nick and Hank discover that a dangerous Wesen is at the heart of the case, a shape-shifting creature that craves blood and profit.

"I pitched The Warlock to accentuate the unique storytelling techniques of comics and mix them with the real settings in Portland," says Nitz of his goals for the series. "I wanted to show parts of Portland that would be impossible to film for the show for logistical reasons, but would be amazing in the comic and the mythos in general. I wanted to capture some of the dark grandeur of the show along with the humor of the actors in particular. I love the way they blend horror and comedy with subtle acting and wanted that to come through in the comic. I also wanted to show some incredible action that might be too much for even the most experienced stuntman. That's the fun of comics. We don't have a special effects budget or limit. We can do anything you can imagine with pencil and paper. It's fun to push the limits of an already established show on the page."

Jai Nitz is a Bram Stoker Award-winning author who has written comic books for Marvel, DC, Image, Disney, Dynamite and other publishers. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1998 with a degree in film studies. He won the prestigious Xeric Foundation grant in 2003 for his self-published anthology, Paper Museum. He won the Bram Stoker Award in 2004 for excellence in illustrated narrative for Heaven's Devils from Image Comics. He is currently writing Dream Thief at Dark Horse Comics. His short film Rhino is currently touring the country on the festival circuit. He also works as a professor at the University of Kansas teaching courses on comic books and film.

"We've been extremely fortunate with the folks at Grimm and NBCUniversal," says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite. "When we launched Grimm at Free Comic Book Day this past year, show creators Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt took personal interest in the project, plotting a story set 100 percent within continuity and really capturing the vibe of the hit series. Now we're stoked that they've welcomed Jai Nitz, a writer who we've worked with closely over the years and one of the industry's rising stars, to contribute the next chapter in its comic book expansion. With José Malaga on art chores, this miniseries is going to deliver chills and thrills aplenty!"

Grimm: The Warlock #1 is solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' October PREVIEWS catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in December 2013.

Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Grimm: The Warlock #1 with their local comic book shop or hobby specialty store. Grimm: The Warlock #1 will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

    Perfect Day no more!

The grim truth behind the most shocking arc of Harbinger yet is finally revealed. Peter Stanchek prepares for the mental battle of his life, with the fate and freedom of his fellow Renegades hanging in the balance!

"The opportunity to present the human side of Peter Stanchek was interesting to me. The [Harbinger Renegades] are a group of outcasts, which makes them instantly relatable, because I would venture to guess that feeling like an outcast is something that we all feel at times, some perhaps more than others," said Friedman. "When we come to terms with the positive aspects of what might set us apart from the rest of the people, we begin to celebrate our unique existence in the world, and only then do we tend to discover and put to good use our true powers and purpose. Harbinger reinforces this truth and it's a healthy metaphor, the way I see it."

"Andy is a singular artistic talent. He's delivered an incredible new vision of the world that Joshua Dysart and Barry Kitson have been building with this series. His inimitable depiction of Peter Stanchek – who he's captured here not as a superhero, or a Renegade, or an omega-level Harbinger, but as an everyday teenager – is the perfect way to cap off the end of our tensest, most mind-bending story arc yet," added Valiant Executive Editor Warren Simons.

Join the series that Comic Book Resources calls "one of the best superhero comics currently available" here as Peter Stanchek prepares for the mental battle of his life, with the fate and freedom of his fellow Renegades hanging in the balance. Muties Out! The great Atomic Wars of 2070 created a population of mutants who, due in part to their bizarre (and in most cases grotesque) deformities, have been denied citizenship in Mega-City One. Rejected by the prejudiced "norms" and forcibly kept away from the city by the Judges, the mutants have had no choice but to live in the vast, radioactive wasteland known as the Cursed Earth. Harboring resentment and hatred against those that have exiled them, bands of mutants now prey on those that stray from behind the city walls - and sometimes even launch all-out attacks in a bid to gain entry to the Big Meg. This action-packed collection features classic encounters between Judge Dredd and mutantkind.

When I first saw John Kricfalusi's art on Ren & Stimpy, I thought it was an amazing blend of retro-'50s "Atom Age" style and just plain 10-year-old-boy gross-out. It's one of the greatest villains of all time as you've never seen him!

    $3.99

What, again? This guy just won't die! He's over at Image, too!

    Meanwhile, here's a press release:

Dynamite is proud to announce the upcoming release of Sherlock Holmes: Moriarty Lives, a five-issue comic book miniseries that pits the literary world's greatest villain Professor Moriarty against a foe every bit as devious and deadly. Written by David Liss (The Shadow Now, Black Panther) and featuring the artistic talent of Daniel Indro (Mark Waid's The Green Hornet), the new Moriarty Lives series launches its first issue in December with a cover by Eisner Award-winning artist Francesco Francavilla (Black Beetle).

The first issue of Moriarty Lives begins where the epic Sherlock Holmes story ends: the final confrontation between the legendary detective and criminal mastermind above Reichenbach Falls, where both seemingly plummet to their doom ... or have they? Washed ashore near a strange town in Switzerland, Professor James Moriarty finds himself alone, penniless and without his network of thieves. Will his cunning and guile be enough against a foe more relentless than Holmes himself? It's one of the greatest villains of all time in a pitched confrontation the likes of which his fans have never seen.

"Moriarty is, of course, one of the best-known villains in literature, but I've always been interested in the idea of telling a story from his perspective," says writer David Liss. "No one is the villain of their own narrative, and no one is evil all the time, so I thought it would be fun to tell a story about a very bad man who finds himself in a situation in which he chooses to be good -- mostly. At least a little. This story is going to take place right after the Arthur Conan Doyle story, "The Final Problem," in which both presumably die in Switzerland. What if Moriarty survived the fall? Where did he go? This is going to be a gritty comic, but also a fun adventure in which Moriarty's devious mind is set against an even more evil and dangerous enemy."

David Liss has written comic books for Marvel and Dynamite, including Black Panther, Mystery Men, The Spider and The Shadow Now. He is also the author of five novels, with more on the way. His debut novel, A Conspiracy of Paper (2000) with its hero, the pugilist-turned-private investigator Benjamin Weaver, was named a New York Times Notable Book and won him the 2001 Barry, MacAvity, and Edgar awards for Best First Novel. David's second novel, The Coffee Trader (2003), was also named a New York Times Notable Book and was selected by the New York Public Library as one of the year's 25 Books to Remember. His third novel A Spectacle of Corruption (2004), the sequel to A Conspiracy of Paper, became a national bestseller. David's fourth novel, The Ethical Assassin (2006), is his first full-length work that is not historical fiction. David's most recent novel, The Whiskey Rebels, is set in 1790′s Philadelphia and New York. The third Benjamin Weaver novel, The Devil's Company, arrived in stores in late 2009.

"David Liss is a damn fine writer, one who has delivered some of the most atmospheric scripts we've ever seen," says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite. "We've taken that skill and made great use of it on The Spider and The Shadow Now, two pulp series set in the modern era. Now, we're taking his writing talents and tossing them back in time to 1891, where he can bring to life one of the darkest tales of villainy -- and perhaps redemption -- that we've ever done. And who better to bring that vision to life than Daniel Indro? Daniel's work on Mark Waid's The Green Hornet could go from foreboding mood to explosive action in a heartbeat... and that's exactly the feel we need for Sherlock Holmes: Moriarty Lives."

Sherlock Holmes: Moriarty Lives #1 will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

Selecting a brief fragment of each chosen film, she creates an indelible image that is both a hand-painted movie still and a personal response to a fleeting celluloid moment. Together, the seventy-eight paintings create a valentine to the world of cinema. Shapton's journey through film history becomes a wistful celebration of the subtle moments in stories, which can often slip by unnoticed. What could be a simple title, still life, or portrait of an actor becomes both illusive and allusive through the medium of these personal paintings. With Sunday Night Movies she brings her love of film to light, and the effect is restrained and fanciful, familiar and all new.

I'd say "Victorian Secret" was a good pun, except that I think I've heard it outside the funnybook world, too.

This is a clever idea. I've never seen an issue, but if the execution is just as clever, it could be awesome.

  • I'm reading Brain Boy, Cap -- and I'm enjoying it. The 0 issue is a decent done-in-one story; Van Lente is the regular writer, and the art in this issue by Freddie Williams III, who's grown into a hell of an artist, IMO; he's doing some really nice stuff on The Movement. The lead character, Matt Price, is a bit of a self-centered jerk, but he's good at his job, and has basically been raised as an "asset" by a security corporation. I think he'll soften a bit as the series goes on. If you like it, the first story in the ongoing series is already complete, running from issues 1-3. I like it -- Psi vs Spy is a fun concept -- but I'm not rabid about it. The next few issues will be make or break for me.

As for Justice League 3000, I think you're misremembering the coverage. It was Kevin MacGuire who was dropped from the book, in favor of Howard Porter (who was always involved in one respect, since he designed the characters).

And I loved Manifest Destiny, too! I'm definitely onboard for issue 2!
