FLASH GORDON HOLIDAY SPECIAL ($5.99, Dynamite Entertainment): Because, why not?
HARBINGER: FAITH #0 ($3.99, Valiant Comics): Dynamite deserves credit for publishing the continuing adventures of a superheroine who isn't shaped like Barbie. Faith is also a lot of fun, because of her huge nerd cred.
JOHN CARPENTER’S ASYLUM ($49.99, Storm King Productions): I don't normally recommend books that A) I haven't seen, and B) are from relatively small or unknown publishers. But this one has moviemaker John Carpenter and comics veteran Bruce Jones attached, so it's worth a look.
KRAMPUS (TPB, $12.99, Image Comics): Twenty years ago I had never heard of Krampus, and now he's taking over the comics industry. That aside, this looks like fun.
THE MULTIVERSITY: THUNDERWORLD #1 ($4.99, DC Comics): Grant Morrison's re-creation of DC's multiverse continues, with this issue focusing on Earth-5, once called Earth-S -- the world of the Fawcett Comics heroes. That means the Captain Marvel characters, Bulletman and Bulletgirl, Spy Smasher, eetc.
RUMBLE #1 ($3.50, Image Comics): A genre-twister that is hard to describe. That could be very good, or very, very bad. Given Image's recent track record of new launches increases confidence in this mystery launch.
SAGA VOL 4 ($14.99, Image Comics): One of the best comics on the stands gets another collection. (Unless you don't like Saga, in which case pretend you didn't read this.)

THE COMPLETE JUNIOR AND SUNNY BY AL FELDSTEIN
Writer/Art/Cover: AL FELDSTEIN
HC • FC • $49.99 • 400 pages • 8.5” x 11”
Long considered to be prime examples of late 1940s “headlight” and “Good Girl” art comics, issues of Junior and Sunny have been quite difficult to find and very expensive to obtain. Until now! Created, written, and illustrated by the legendary E.C. Comics artist/writer/editor Al Feldstein for the notorious Victor Fox of Fox Feature Publications, The Complete Junior and Sunny presents the full run of these comics, along with a historical introduction by Grant Geissman. Although the stories are basically charming, “typical teenage” period pieces, Feldstein’s artwork often pushes the envelope for the time, with titillating covers and often-suggestive images in the stories themselves. It’s probably a good thing that Dr. Fredric Wertham never found out about Junior and Sunny! Seduction of the innocent, indeed!
Al Feldstein’s Racy Cult Classic Collected!
San Diego, CA (September 11, 2014) – IDW Publishing is proud to announce the release of The Complete Junior and Sunny, which presents the full run of these historic comics created, written, and illustrated by the legendary E.C. Comics artist/writer/editor Al Feldstein.
Imagine a young Betty Page type meeting up with some late-1940s, typical-teenage types (a la Archie), and you will get an idea of what is to be found in The Complete Junior and Sunny. Along with an in-depth Introduction by Grant Geissman, the book also presents the issue of Meet Corliss Archer that Feldstein also produced for the notorious Victor Fox, of Fox Feature Publications.
Done between 1947 and 1948 in the period right before he moved to E.C. Comics, Feldstein’s bold artwork and salacious figures are on full display, providing a wonderfully guilty pleasure. Long considered to be prime examples of late 1940s “headlight” and “Good Girl” art comics, issues of Junior and Sunny have been quite difficult to find and very expensive to obtain. Until now!
“Although the stories are basically charming, ‘typical teenage’ period pieces, Feldstein’s artwork for them often pushes the envelope for the time,” says Geissman. “With titillating covers and often-suggestive images in the stories themselves, it’s probably a good thing that Dr. Fredric Wertham never found out about Junior and Sunny!” Seduction of the innocent, indeed!
I think I've said this before, but ... not every old comic book deserves reprinting.

Kichiro is an outsider in feudal Japan -- shipwrecked after marauders killed his parents, he is found and raised by a samurai who teaches him to live by bushido, the samurai code. Though he can never be recognized as a samurai because of his blood, in BUSHIDO, the new Image Comics/Top Cow graphic novel, Kichiro finds he can use his skills and sense of duty to serve in another way: defeating the blood-drinking forces of darkness that have descended on Japan.
In this graphic novel by Rob Levin and Jessada Sutthi of Studio Hive, a clan of vampires is bent on assassinating the shogun and claiming power for themselves. Kichiro recognizes them as the same marauders who mercilessly overran his ship so many years ago and vows to defeat them -- to both avenge his past and protect his future.
“Exploring the philosophy, goals and techniques of vampires and samurai -- and doing it all during an epic conflict between these two forces with gorgeous painted art was too good an opportunity to pass up,” said writer Levin. “But even more than that, Bushido allowed me to work with themes of family, honor and what it feels like to be an outsider, which is really what hooked me into the story on a personal level.”
BUSHIDO will be in comic book stores on December 17 and in bookstores on December 30. It is available for pre-order now.
Praise for BUSHIDO:
“Jessada’s art is impeccable. ... The digital art alludes to the paintings of the Edo period and create a true Japanese tale. The colours work well and create an enthralling read. The dark scenes really feel eerie, allowing the reader not to forget that this is a read with a supernatural threat lurking in the shadows.” -- Byron Hendricks, Fortress of Solitude

DRIFTER #2
Story: IVAN BRANDON
Art / Cover A: NIC KLEIN
Cover B: BECKY CLOONAN
32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.50
Abram and the Sheriff explore the sunken ruins of Abram’s crashed ship. In search of answers, they find a horde of scavenging raiders and a lightning storm that brings more than just thunder and rain.
Writer Ivan Brandon (Wolverine, Men of War) and artist Nic Klein (Captain America, Thor), paint a dark and eerie alien landscape in their forthcoming series DRIFTER, which was first announced at Image Expo preceding San Diego Comic-Con this year. Becky Cloonan lends her interpretation of DRIFTER to issue #2 as a blue-toned variant cover that displays her characteristically humanistic take on character design.
In DRIFTER, mankind has spread across the universe in a frantic rush to survive and has colonized and strip-mined countless planets in the process. Abram Pollux barely survives a crash landing on Ouro, a lawless backwater world where life is cheap. This world’s unique properties set the stage for a story that combines the dark wonder of an alien landscape with the struggles of an abandoned and lawless frontier town.
DRIFTER can best be described as Unforgiven meets Dune and boasts strong, stark revenge themes against a layered world-building backdrop.

KRAMPUS! (TPB)
Story: BRIAN JOINES
Art / Cover: DEAN KOTZ
Colors: RON RILEY
136 PAGES / FC / Mature / $12.99
Collects KRAMPUS! #1-5
He’s the Krampus, yuletide wielder of birch switches and punisher of wicked children, long locked up so that his particular brand of outdated discipline won’t ruin yet another Christmas. And he’s the unexpected hero of the Image Comics graphic novel KRAMPUS!, a jolly holiday romp by Brian Joines (Imagine Agents) and Dean Kotz (Charmed, Mask of the Red Panda).
Scheming Sugar Plum Fairies have stolen the Secret Society of Santa Clauses’ power, and the only one cunning enough to get it back is the Krampus. With his flying wolf Stutgaard, the Krampus sets out on a world-crossing mission, encountering other mythical figures of winter lore and uncovering a sinister scheme to topple the Santas. If it succeeds, it will change Christmas forever -- and if Krampus succeeds in stopping it, so will he.
“I grew up with a kind of jaded, dark sense of humor and I love the idea of anything that punches holes in the bright and shiny ‘sacred cows’ of childhood and innocence, like Christmas,” said Joines in an interview at What’cha Reading? “I think the Krampus is a figure that represents a rebellion against the false elements. In a lot of ways, it’s kind of cathartic.”
Praise for KRAMPUS!:
“Modern day Christmas stories often lack the spark and creativity of tried and true classics, but Joines and Kotz have touched on an overlooked aspect of the holidays. While the concept is mostly played for laughs, the plot and characters remain engaging. Krampus! tells a solid story on its own merits, in spite of its Christmas trappings, which should help it remain a worthwhile read, even after the New Year has rung.” -- Zach Wilkerson, Multiversity Comics
"Krampus! #1 is a fun holiday romp that is an unexpected gem that you should jump at the chance to get your hands on. Joines and Kotz have a really fun book on their hands that kicks off with a bang. Not many comics can make me laugh, and this one did…many times. Do the holidays right. Do them with Krampus!.” -- Aaron Long, Comicosity
“Packed with as much excitement and zaniness as your crazy intoxicated uncles on Christmas Eve, Krampus! #1 is one heck of an entertaining story. Joines’ brings so much energy and life to his characters, you can’t help but to enjoy this mystical adventure. Adding to the book’s humor is the fantastic artwork of Dean Kotz and Ron Riley. Their pages are popping with suspense; just check out the toyshop brawl between the elves. Yeah, that’s right, the book features a toyshop melee with the Santas’ elves throwing down.” -- Chris Romero, Geeks Unleashed

RUMBLE #1
Story: JOHN ARCUDI
Art / Cover: JAMES HARREN
32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.50
Co-creators John Arcudi (writer of BPRD, Savage Wolverine, A God Somewhere and the Eisner-nominated The Creep) and James Harren (artist on Conan, BPRD, and cover artist for Hawkeye vs. Deadpool) team up once again for the launch of an epic and bizarre action/adventure series filled with fantasy and page-turning thrills arriving on December 17.
In RUMBLE, a scarecrow -- a warrior scarecrow god called Rathraq, that is -- walks into a bar ... and it’s all downhill from there. After a long absence, Rathraq is back and very unhappy. This is bad news for his old enemies, yes, but even worse news for everyone else, including bartender Bobby LaRosa who finds himself caught in the chaos.
RUMBLE is an eclectic mix of tone and genre, something that Arcudi commented on as adding depth and a dose of reality to the story. “Rumble is not just fantasy, not just action, not just drama, or not just humorous, you know? That’s too limiting. That’s not how we live. You wake up happy, then something happens that messes up your whole day (of course, in the case of Rumble, that ‘something’ just so happens to be a giant sword-wielding scarecrow and some monsters), but you still manage to have a laugh that night. What I like about this book is that any character can have a day like that. Any of them, human and non-human."
Arcudi also cited Harren’s flexibility in art styles as allowing for smooth transitions throughout RUMBLE. “James’s art allows us to go in all the directions the story needs to go. Nobody draws ferocious action the way James does. Monsters smashing each other’s heads in, that’s in the book, and James kills on it! But he also can set a spooky mood, and while his idea of what’s ‘funny’ is rather bizarre, that’s exactly what the book needs!”
The characters of RUMBLE must adapt along with the readers and will go through various transformations along the way. Arcudi added: “What I hope will be entertaining to readers is Bartender Bobby’s unique way of adapting to his new and rapidly changing world. That’s also true of Rathraq, the warrior scarecrow. He has to adapt to his new world as well, but in a very different way and for very different reasons. From those kinds of perspectives grow all kinds of interesting plot lines and stories! And they’re just two of the many characters we’ll be playing with.”
RUMBLE is a modern-day action fantasy series where rundown dive bars, undead kitty cats, psycho skinheads, and giant mummies run amok.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #6
Story: KIERON GILLEN
Art / Cover: JAMIE MCKELVIE & MATT WILSON
32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.50
THE FAUST ACT is over. Welcome to FANDEMONIUM.
The second arc of THE WICKED + THE DIVINE begins in its traditional manner (i.e. a ludicrous pun.) We'd say something like “nothing will ever be the same again” but if you think about it, you can say that about literally everything, ever. Er...also some comic story. Probably.
THE WICKED + THE DIVINE WELCOME TO FANDEMONIUM
The second arc of Gillen and McKelvie’s hit series will arrive in time to shake up your December
“A glorious new comic series about death, creativity and pop.” -- Pitchfork
THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, the white-hot new series by writer Kieron Gillen and artist Jamie McKelvie about gods being briefly reincarnated as pop stars before dying, drew crowds of worshippers and is heading into a thrilling new story arc that will leave fans shocked and breathless. With each issue of the first arc flying off the shelves at record speed, this new story arc promises an even higher degree of electrifying story this December.
The Faust Act is over. Welcome to Fandemonium. The second arc of THE WICKED + THE DIVINE begins with issue #6 in its traditional manner (i.e. a ludicrous pun) and something like “nothing will ever be the same again.” But if you think about it, you can say that about literally everything, ever. Also, some comic story. Probably.
Writer Gillen remained coy about the second arc’s plot twists, but hinted that each issue would pack a punch readers wouldn’t see coming. "With the first arc, we wanted an intense, classic comics' build, rising towards the fifth issue as this big, earthquake-sized heart-attack climax,” said Gillen. “Our second arc—FANDEMONIUM—is different. It's a line of chasers on the bar, each a micro-nuke cocktail, served with a wink and distilled for concentrated effect. The first arc was a week or so in the gods' two-year lives. In the second arc, each issue is separated by a whole month and focuses around a single gathering of fans. Time's running out. Time's always running out."
WILDFIRE VOL 1 (TPB)
Story: MATT HAWKINS
Art / Cover: LINDA SEJIC
128 PAGES / FC / T+ / $14.99
Collects WILDFIRE #1-4
WILDFIRE is the new graphic novel from Image Comics/Top Cow exploring the politically charged topic of genetically modified food in a tense, thought-provoking thriller by Matt Hawkins (THINK TANK, APHRODITE IX) and Linda Sejic that leaves it to readers to make up their own minds about the controversy.
Ending hunger is the goal of genetic researchers at megacorporation Biogenesis like Dr. Beth Silva, but an accident during a media demonstration illustrates the unintended consequences that may result from experimenting on an organism’s DNA. Los Angeles is choked with rapidly growing plants, returning the city that is home to 3.8 million people to a state of nature. Dan Miller, a young scientist who worked on Dr. Silva’s project, must race against time to stop the growth, before L.A. is completely obliterated.
Artist Sejic, creator of the popular webcomic Blood Stain, imbues this story with science at its center with heart and humanity with her expressive characterizations while writer Hawkins, who is also the President of Top Cow, balances points of view with character development in writing a story that revolves around a controversial topic.
"When I started researching the polarizing reactions to GMO I quickly discovered that both ends of the argument were exaggerating and making specious claims," said Hawkins. "In writing Wildfire I attempted an even-handed approach to the material explaining both the pros and cons in the background of the character's stories without preaching at anyone."
The trade paperback also includes a “Science Class” feature, in which Hawkins, who has a Master’s degree in physics, lays out the science and debate around genetically modified organisms (GMO).
WILDFIRE will be in comic book stores on December 3 and in bookstores on December 16. It is available for pre-order now. Part two of WILDFIRE will launch in Fall 2015.
Praise for WILDFIRE:
“This is the genius of Matt Hawkins, to take very real science and extrapolate it into an exciting and very readable narrative, something he’s been carving out quite the niche with Aphrodite IX and Think Tank previously and now with Wildfire. One thing his stories inspire, which not many others do, is a chain reaction of interest in the science laid out on the page with helpful starting points just waiting for you in the Science Class portion at the end.” Chris, Comic Hype

Valiant is proud to announce HARBINGER: FAITH #0 -- a brand new one-shot exploration of Valiant's high-flying teenage Renegade and Unity's newest team member!
Coming in December from New York Times best-selling writer Joshua Dysart (Harbinger, Harbinger Wars) and rising star Robert Gill (Armor Hunters: Harbinger), start reading here to discover how Harbinger's high-spirited teenage fangirl went from the heart and soul of Peter Stanchek's teenage Renegades to the newest member of the world's most elite super-team -- UNITY!
As Faith recuperates from the events of Armor Hunters: Harbinger, jump on board and discover the complete, never-before-revealed tale of her origin – just as she steps into the limelight for a brand new story arc beginning in November's UNITY #12!
Her first and only boyfriend to date is a little bit of a douche, her friends are all gone, and, after her insane adventure in Mexico City, Faith Hebert is feeling a little frustrated with the direction of her life. She’s just a normal super-powered young woman in an increasingly crazy world. Here’s the story of a true innocent and a kind heart in a hard world. From the comic shop of her youth to the moment she found out that she was actually light as feather, Zephyr is the western wind. Warm and kind, she blows across us all.
"She may not be physically strong, or brilliantly tactical, but her emotional intelligence and psychological strength are unparalleled among the other Renegades," writer Joshua Dysart told Multiversity Comics. "I think some part of her understands that her light is needed even more in a world where you can lose your friends and face down horrible swarming alien insects. I think she sees a dark and violent world all around her and instead of that corrupting her, it reinforces her. Again, there’s a hint of that in this issue, but it’s also about a question we all ask ourselves, where do we go from here?"
This is HARBINGER: FAITH #0! Featuring covers by all-star artists Joe Quinones (Wednesday Comics), Lucy Knisley (Harbinger #25), and Brian Level (Lazarus), be here this December as one of the most unique, most sincere super-heroines anywhere in comics today takes on her very first solo adventure!
And don't miss UNITY #12 by New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt and red-hot artist CAFU -- the FIRST ISSUE of an all-new story arc recruiting Faith into the ranks of Valiant's unbreakable all-star superteam, just as they go toe-to-toe with a brand new threat known only as The United!

Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS
Writer: JUSTIN JORDAN
Art: ARIELA KRISTANTINA
Cover: MATT TAYLOR
WHY WE LOVE IT: You know all those conspiracy theories you hear about? Deep State is a dream (nightmare?) come true for conspiracy theory nuts like us here at BOOM!
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: With Luther Strode, Dead Body Road, and Spread Justin Jordan has become one of the eminent voices in hardintelligent, original comics, and Ariela Kristantina (Death of Wolverine) brings her unique, idiosyncratic style that has made her a breakout talent. WHAT IT'S ABOUT: John Harrow doesn't exist, and his job is to make sure that other things don't exist, too. At any given time, the government is running dozens of black book operations, experiments that aren't on any official record and are never acknowledged to exist. Some of these are innocuous. Some of them are monstrous beyond reason. And most of the time, they go as expected and the public is never the wiser. Most of the time. John Harrow's job is to handle them when things go wrong, and do anything to make sure the government's secrets stay just that -- secret.
