Arcudi and Fejzula Lock Down New Series Dead Inside

Publisher: DARK HORSE

Writer: JOHN ARCUDI

Art: TONI FEJZULA

Variant: FAITH ERIN HICKS

Colors: ANDRÉ MAY

Cover: DAVE JOHNSON

FC • 32 pages • $3.99 • Miniseries

This winter Dark Horse Comics is set to release Dead Inside, a brand-new creator-owned series from acclaimed writer John Arcudi (Rumble, The Creep, B.P.R.D.) and up-and-coming artist Toni Fejzula (Cthulhu, Lobster Johnson, Veil). Dead Inside is a twisted, bloody and unexpected crime story where a murder has occurred in the least expected place: behind bars.

“It’s not often that I get to write crime fiction, because I worry I don’t have anything to add to the genre. This time I feel like I do. The more I read about jail crimes investigations, the more I knew I had to tell this story,” said Arcudi.

The Jail Crimes Division of the Sheriff’s Office in Mariposa County investigates crimes committed inside county jails. With a limited number of suspects who can’t escape, these are usually easy cases to solve—but not this one. As Detective Linda Caruso gets closer to the heart of the case, she discovers uncomfortable truths about her friends, her job, and herself.

With stunning covers by Dave Johnson, Dead Inside is perfect for fans of crime or prison television, such as Orange Is the New Black, American Crime Story or Making a Murderer. With Dead Inside, Arcudi offers a fresh perspective on the ever-popular crime genre.

The series is already generating buzz from creators and press:

Dead Inside is the best kind of murder mystery.”—COMICS ALLIANCE

"Dead Inside is a crime story like I’ve never seen. I’m a big crime fiction guy, so that takes some doing. Arcudi and Fejula have crafted a story about a murder mystery behind bars. Take a damaged detective and a crime no wants solved, and you’ve got a classic noir from a new angle. If you like crime comics, this is the one to read.”—Justin Jordan (The Strange Talent of Luther Strode)

“One of my favorite new comics of the year. … Brilliant and a must read for fans of the genre.”—FORCES OF GEEK

Dead Inside is the kind of mystery comic that creeps under your skin, burrows into your brain, and lingers there between issues.”—Cullen Bunn (Harrow County)

“This has been a banner year for strange murder-mystery comics.”—ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

“An intriguing set-up to a compelling mystery, well-executed by the consistently great John Arcudi. And with fantastic-looking art to boot!”—John Layman (Chew)

“Criminally good.”—MULTIVERSITY

“Dead Inside reveals John Arcudi at the top of his game. I'll be following this one all the way.”—Garth Ennis (Preacher)

"A compelling angle on the crime genre: prison murder investigator. It’s as lurid and unsettling as it sounds, and I love every page of it."—Brian Wood (Briggs Land)

“Arcudi and Fejzula immerse us in a compelling murder mystery with blood and dread around every small town corner. You can feel something wicked this way coming.”—Peter J. Tomasi (House of Penance, Superman)

“Fills your pores with existential dread.”—FREAK SUGAR

Nice pun in the title. Looking forward to trying this one.

This winter, the Valiant Universe you once knew is no more. … Only the Stalinverse remains!

Valiant is proud to present DIVINITY III: STALINVERSE #1 – the FIRST ISSUE of Valiant’s all-new event-level epic from the 7-time Harvey Award-nominated creative team of writer Matt Kindt (4001 A.D.), artist Trevor Hairsine (X-Men: Deadly Genesis), inker Ryan Winn (X-O MANOWAR), and colorist David Baron (BLOODSHOT REBORN)!

At the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union were racing to the stars. But, while America was aiming for the moon, Russia had its eyes on the cosmos. In secret, they launched a three-man mission into the far reaches of space. In the depths, they discovered something Unknown. Something that…changed them. Imbued with god-like powers, the long-lost cosmonauts returned home…only to discover that their old ideology, communism, lost the war to western capitalism in the decades since their journey first began. But now they have the power to change it all …

The sold-out sci-fi saga that redefined the Valiant Universe begins a reality-shattering comics event that will collide the world’s most formidable heroes with a disturbing new vision. … One where a worldwide Soviet empire now rules a world order. … The Iron Curtain extends across continents, shattering governments and armies in its wake. … And the communist global super-state rules not only with an iron fist, but with powers far beyond the comprehension of mortal men.

Earth has a new god. The world you know is gone. Welcome to the Stalinverse, comrade.

“Divinity’s place in the Valiant Universe is about to fundamentally reshape the world as we thought we knew it, and the ramifications of this series will play out for months and years after the final page,” said Valiant CEO and Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani. “Not only is the story fully in continuity, it will leave several major new, key elements and characters in place that will be essential to Valiant’s plans going forward. We're incredibly excited for readers to finally see all the twists, turns and surprises that DIVINITY III: STALINVERSE has in store!"

Witness a disturbing new vision of the world as it now stands! One where the Cold War was won long ago and a global Soviet empire now rules the world. … Where the Iron Curtain extends across oceans and continents, subsuming freedom and liberty in its wake. … And where the Russian communist super-state rules the world not only with an iron fist, but with ultimate power far beyond the comprehension of mortal men.

“STALINVERSE has always been something we’ve been building towards since the very beginning of DIVINITY,” said Valiant Editor-in-Chief Warren Simons. “This series will not only have major repercussions for every key hero and villain in the Valiant Universe, but will also give us our first glimpse of new characters with a long-term trajectory. From HARBINGER WARS to BOOK OF DEATH to 4001 A.D., Valiant’s events have always been big, but Matt and Trevor are elevating the stakes to a truly global concern here – they’re building not just an event, but an entirely new and terrifying world.”

Then: the revolutionary upheaval continues on Dec. 28 as New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire (BLOODSHOT REBORN, Death of X) and comics superstar Clayton Crain (4001 A.D.) present a blood-curdling examination of the Stalinverse’s ultimate state-sponsored assassin in DIVINITY III: KOMANDAR BLOODSHOT #1 –  the first of four essential specials revealing the super-powered Soviet regime behind the winter’s most incendiary comics event!

He’s put down protests, led the purge of political undesirables, and executed dozens of traitors to the Soviet super-state. His name is KOMANDAR BLOODSHOT. …and his existence is a hushed whisper among the terrified populace of the 21st century’s global Soviet Union. But just who is this unrelenting enforcer of state superiority… and what is the shocking truth about his power, his allegiances, and his true identity?

Don’t miss the shocking twists and turmoil that await in DIVINITY III: KOMANDAR BLOODSHOT #1 – featuring an iron-clad line of covers from Clayton Crain (Carnage), Ryan Bodenheim (The Dying & The Dead), Greg Smallwood (Moon Knight), Trevor Hairsine (DIVINITY III: STALINVERSE), and Kano (Daredevil)!

Plus: The Staliverse’s subversive spread continues in DIVINITY III: ARIC, SON OF THE REVOLUTION #1! On January 18th, join acclaimed writer Joe Harris (Snowfall, The X-Files: Season 10) and Valiant-exclusive superstar David Lafuente (Ultimate Spider-Man) as they reveal what happens when Valiant’s leading legend – the unstoppable X-O Manowar – becomes the supreme fighting force of the CCCP in the next must-read one-shot torn from the pages of DIVINITY III: STALINVERSE!

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery for most people, it could be the deadliest for The Green Hornet and Kato. With their vigilantism tearing apart organized crime, Chicago is visited by two more masked individuals: one claiming to be a friend and the other ... their most formidable foe yet!

I haven't read any of Dynamite's Hornet stories yet. This might be a good time to jump on.

GUMBALLS #1

Publisher: IDW PUBLISHING

Writer/Art/Cover: ERIN NATIONS

$3.99 • 32-pages • FC • 6.625" x 9.5"

Pop in your quarters and see what pops out of Gumballs — a brand new one-man anthology comic from Portland cartoonist Erin Nations! His bright, candy-colored palette and crisp linework pop off the page, while his stories reflect a fascination with humanity in all its diverse foibles — hinting at one of his earliest creative influences, Matt Groening’s The Simpsons.

In Gumballs #1, Erin serves up a delicious variety of stories: recollections of growing up as a triplet, interactions with oddball grocery-store customers, the adventures of clueless dork Tobias, painfully funny faux Personal Ads, and “Tales of Being Trans” -- reflections on Erin’s true-life journey of gender transition.

Gumballs tips its hat to the classic alt-comic tradition of Eightball, Optic Nerve and Box Office Poison, but speaks with a delightfully fresh voice for the modern age.

Gumballs breaks new ground as Top Shelf's first project from an openly transgender cartoonist, but it's also our first new project in the comic book format in over a decade. The last comic book series launched under the Top Shelf banner was The Surrogates by Robert Venditti & Brett Weldele, which went on to become a New York Times Bestseller and inspire a hundred-million-dollar movie ... so clearly the future is bright for Erin Nations and Gumballs!

This doesn't look like my flavor of alt-comics, but I'm glad it exists.

This December, the Renegades reunite … and a new enemy rises!

Valiant is proud to present your first look inside HARBINGER RENEGADE #2 – the next can’t-miss chapter of the essential Valiant ongoing series debut of 2016! On December 21st, join multiple Harvey Award nominee Rafer Roberts (Plastic Farm), and superstar artist Darick Robertson (The Boys, Transmetropolitan) as they push Valiant’s high-powered team of psiot upstarts off of the sidelines and into the firefight of their lives! Alexander Solomon – the renegade pupil of Toyo Harada – can predict the future, and his plans for the future could transform the world – or end it altogether. Now, as the Harbinger Renegades reassemble their lives and learn to be a team, Solomon will force them toward a new purpose in his campaign for a disturbing new tomorrow...

Kris Hathaway, Peter Stanchek, Faith Herbert, and John Torkelson thought they could go underground. They thought they could get their old lives back. They were wrong. As four psionically powered “psiots” that can defy the laws of physics with a thought alone, this extraordinarily dangerous team of teenagers won’t be able to escape the fight that society has brought to their door. As Alexander Solomon’s violent, new superpower movement spreads across the suburbs, America’s only hope will be the teenagers it wished it could forget.

HOOKJAW RESURFACES AT TITAN COMICS

THE CLASSIC KILLER GREAT WHITE -  REIMAGINED BY COMICS SUPERSTAR SI SPURRIER & RISING STAR CONOR BOYLE!

Titan Comics are thrilled to announce the release of a brand-new Hookjaw mini-series.

The five issue miniseries is written by comics fire-cracker Si Spurrier (Cry Havoc, Weavers, Doctor Who, Numbercruncher) and illustrated by rising star Conor Boyle, with colors by Giulia Brusco and edited by legendary British comics editor and marine life expert artist, Steve White.

The miniseries is set to be an intense modern iteration of the titular ocean predator, which debuted in legendary British comic (and forerunner to 2000 AD) Action #1. Initially inspired by the success of the film, Jaws, Hookjaw was one of many Action strips so violent it was banned from the shelves upon release!

“I've wanted to do a Hookjaw story as long as I've been making comics,” gushed A-list writer Si Spurrier. “Social, complex, intelligent and exceptionally good at what it does, today's Hookjaw arrives like a shadow amidst a catalogue of zoologists, soldiers, spies and Somali pirates. Every person involved thinks they're the hero of the story. They're all wrong.”

As the series synopsis indicates, this creative team are pushing this new iteration into completely uncharted water.

Off the coast of Somalia, a rag-tag group of marine scientists are studying the Virgin Brides, a pack of female great whites. What secrets are laying at the bottom of the Indian Ocean? And just how will they face up to the shadowy terror of the legendary great white – HOOKJAW?!

Hookjaw #1 will be on sale in comic stores and digital devices from December 2016 and is available to order from the October edition of PREVIEWS.

Here's the third book this month with a great white shark as the principal villain. Why? You're about a million times more likely to die from a car wreck than a shark bite. But eventually we'll be out of sharks, and still have too many cars.

• Following the blockbuster success of last year’s Star Trek/Green Lantern, DC Entertainment and IDW once again bring you the best team-up in the galaxy!

The first series was surprisingly good. Part of what made it work was (SPOILER!) Johnson's complete disregard for the usual rules of publishing crossovers (equal time for both publishers' characters, all characters equally heroic, nobody wins if they fight, status quo is left unchanged, etc.), He started the story by destroying the entire DC Universe on Page One, with a few characters from the GL mythos ending up in the Star Trek universe as refugees -- or would-be conquerors (see: Sinestro). That altered the usual dynamic utterly, giving the story both a freshness and a feeling of real suspense. I'm looking forward to Part II.

It’s the story that has the whole industry talking – and it’s unfolding right before your eyes! Today, Marvel is pleased to present your new look inside INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #2, the next can’t miss chapter from blockbuster creators Brian Michael Bendis and Stefano Caselli! Riri Williams has built her own homemade Iron Man armor, and now she has an A.I. to help her – the downloaded consciousness of Tony Stark himself! With Tony Stark mentoring her (okay, a version of Tony Stark) she can’t lose right? Let’s just say Riri Williams just might change the face of the Marvel Universe forever … if she survives the experience first. Easier said than done! Don’t miss the highly anticipated next issue when INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #2 comes to comic shops and digital devices everywhere!

Missed Riri’s first outing? Be there when INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1 returns to comic shops!

  • I think they are pushing Carol too hard.  In cw2 she was the heavy and didn't really have a lot of reasons to go as far as she did.  She basically was throwing people into jail for stuff they might do.  Ironically she's friends with a lot of the X-men and a lot of the basis for the mu humans to distrust and fear the X-men is because of what they might do because they have powers.  You'd think she would have slowed it down a bit, or at least realized how unconstitutional it was.  The is the second cw where she's come off as being the heavy, I hate to think what they'll have her do in cw 3, 4, and 5.

The new Iron Heart is intriguing, but if you can whip up Iron Man level armor in a dorm room why doesn't everyone have one?  I'm also wondering how she gets her hair to fit into the helmut.

Justice League/Suicide should be interesting.  I think when Diana (among others) confronts Waller about what she is doing Waller can counter about how the amazon's have been raping and murdering men throughout the ages and selling male babies for weapons.  I'm sure she has a lot of dirt on the JL and will use it.

As curious as I am about these three stories though I'm just not up to paying 13.00 for 3 comics. I've sort of been priced out of this hobby for a while.

  • “I haven't read any of Dynamite's Hornet stories yet. This might be a good time to jump on.”

A great jumping on point, if you have any interest in Green Hornet at all, would be the recently completed Green Hornet/Lone Ranger mini-series.

    Trust me on this.
