BEST BETS
For more information on Best Bets and other titles,
consult the "This Week's Comics" section below.
ADVENTURES IN OZ VOL 1 ($34.99, IDW): Eric Shanower was born to draw Oz books, and by some amazing convergence of good luck and good decisions, he is.
ANGELA: ASGARD’S ASSASSIN #1 ($3.99, Marvel Comics): Angela has been revealed in the “Original Sin” crossover to be a deep, dark Asgardian secret – a hidden sister of Thor, exiled to a Tenth Realm in an Asgardian cosmology that until now was thought to only have nine realms.
But her real-world origin is equally surprising: She was a Neil Gaiman creation when he was guest-writing issues of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn comic book, and when McFarlane claimed ownership, Gaiman took him to court, where Angela has been tied up for years. That legal wrangling is over, and now Angela has re-appeared at Marvel Comics, of all places, being written by off-beat writer Kieron Gillen.
So, yeah, I’m a little curious.
ESSENTIAL HARVEY KURTZMAN VOL 1: HARVEY KURTZMAN'S JUNGLE BOOK (HC, $24.99, Dark Horse/Kitchen Sink): As I say in an upcoming column, this book is famous for how influential it was, and infamous for how out-of-print it stubbornly remained. Dark Horse has fixed the last part, and I suspect we’re all going to go “Oh, so that’s where that came from” a lot when we read it.
PRIDE OF BAGHDAD DELUXE EDITION (HC, $24.99, DC Comics): This graphic novel follows a pride of lions who escape from the Baghdad Zoo during one American invasion or other. That might seem like a flimsy premise, but in the hands of Brian K. Vaughan and Niko Henrichon it’s a story that will engage both heart and mind, and one you will never forget.
SHAFT #1 ($3.99, Dynamite): Dynamite has assembled an impressive group of creators who could make this an awesome book. OTOH, the concept may be so dated and so tied to blaxploitation that no one can make it work. I'm eager to find out!
VALIANT-SIZED QUANTUM AND WOODY #1 (One-Shot, $4.99, Valiant Comics): When it looks like Earth is going to be destroyed by an asteroid, Woody (of Quantum & Woody, the world’s worst superhero team) chooses the obvious (for Woody) plan: He flees into another dimension.
But, as we know from every Marvel and DC comic book ever, there are jillions of parallel worlds, with duplicates of every character ever conceived, so yeah, there are a lot of other Woodys out there – all with the same idea.
If that doesn’t sound like 40 pages of non-stop hilarity to you, then I just don’t know who you are any more.

I don't think there's anything essential about anything starring Hush, a character whose introduction was about the clumsiest attempt to create an arch-villain I've seen since the Silver Age. Heck, I'd rather read about Big Wheel or the Rocket Racer!
But I'm sure that's just me.

In the 1960s, at the height of the Batman TV series’ popularity, a shonen manga magazine in Japan serialized fifty-three chapters of original comics starring The Dark Knight, all written and illustrated by Managaka Jiro Kuwata. Now, DC Entertainment is proud to publish the complete Batman Manga adventures in English for the first time in three painstakingly restored volumes. The adventure begins when the Dynamic Duo faces the insidious threat of Lord Death Man!
If nothing else, this might explain a few things about the Japanese Batman in Morrison's Batman Inc.
And, BTW, is it just me, or does that cover look like it was inked by Joe Giella? And that the pose is uncannily like the Aurora Batman model?

The displaced masses taking shelter in Chicago run for their lives when an unbelievable force descends on the city. Scattered and frantic, Barbara and Dick Grayson hunt for shelter and find a safe haven that hides a sinister secret. Will the two make it out alive with their son?
"Will the two make it out alive with their son?"
And if they don't, will we care? I don't mean to be callous, but I don't really feel any connection to these characters, aside from the familiar names. The writer hasn't done anything with them to make me care, and in the case of Dick Grayson, I'm beginning to actively dislike him.

MARSHAL LAW (TPB)
Written by PAT MILLS
Art and cover by KEVIN O’NEILL
480 pg, FC, $29.99 US • MATURE READERS
MARSHAL LAW is back! This futuristic law official is charged with policing superheroes gone rogue by any means necessary, all while fighting his own self-hatred for being the thing he hates most: a superhero. Featuring art by Kevin O’Neill, illustrator of THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, the centerpiece of this massive paperback is the six-part tale in which Marshal Law hunts down the Sleepman, a serial killer who is connected to the popular hero known as The Public Spirit. Collects MARSHAL LAW #1-6, MARSHAL LAW: FEAR AND LOATHING, MARSHAL LAW TAKES MANHATTAN, MARSHAL LAW: KINGDOM OF THE BLIND and MARSHAL LAW: THE HATEFUL DEAD, MARSHAL LAW: SUPER BABYLON and MARSHAL LAW: SECRET TRIBUNAL #1-2.
I read the Marshal Law comics originally back in high school, and really didn't care for them. I understood they were satire, but they were so dark and cynical I found them repulsive. (It doesn't help that I find Kevin O'Neill's art somewhat repulsive.) I'm looking forward to re-reading these stories now in my dotage, to see if the change in perspective changes my opinion.

Gail Simone is back with the NEW 52 debut of the fan-favorite team – THE SECRET SIX! Six strangers are brought together under mysterious circumstances for an explosive first issue that will leave everyone asking, “What is the Secret?”
Following her historic run on BATGIRL, writer Gail Simone is about to embark on a new series, SECRET SIX.
So, what's the secret? We're not saying, but with covers and character designs by Dale Eaglesham and interior art by Ken Lashley this is going to be one incredible comic book.
Full of mystery and danger, SECRET SIX features six characters who, when thrown together, hate each other and must learn to work with each other.
Who are the Secret Six? Well, for now, Simone is only sharing a couple. Making their first appearance in The New 52 are Catman and Black Alice.
Head on over to DCCOMICS.COM for the details!
I loved the previous iteration of this book, when Simone was writing it. Now here she is again, writing another one. Stoked!

Don’t miss the start of this new 6-issue miniseries! WOLF MOON is a horrific werewolf hunt unlike any other. When Dillon Chase’s family was slaughtered by the wolf, his life was forever changed. Dillon sets out to destroy the creature, but he soon learns that lycanthropy is far more insidious than the legends ever said. With each full moon, he draws closer to the monster – and with each full moon, he becomes more aware that in order to stop the wolf, he must kill a human being and become a fearful monster himself.
I've mentioned before that the werewolf concept doesn't do much for me. But I've enjoyed a lot of Cullen Bunn's work, so maybe I'll enjoy the story anyway.

Cover B looks realllly familiar, but I can't remember if it's a Wolverine cover I'm thinking of, or a Conan/Kull/Sonja/Savage Tales cover, or something else entirely, so I don't know where to begin to look. If it strikes a memory for anyone else, let me know! Finally, Cover D is an homage to the movie poster for E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, in which a boy is riding a (flying) bicycle in front of the moon, with the titular character riding on the handlebars.

As the Chosen One, Ash has seen some strange things and visited some strange times and places. But nothing has prepared him for this! Catapulted into the depths of space, Ash must confront the Deadites in a place where no one can hear his screams … or his chainsaw … or his boomstick! What do the forces of the evil dead want with the International Space Station? Whatever it is, Ash embarks on his most out-of-this-world adventure in order to stop them!
Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces that its flagship title and longest-running comic book series, Army of Darkness, will launch with a brand new #1 issue in December. Cullen Bunn, the celebrated writer of Deadpool, will take iconic horror hero Ash Williams somewhere he has never been before: outer space. Longtime franchise fans are invited to strap themselves in for the bold new direction, in a series featuring interior artwork by Army of Darkness staple Larry Watts, as well as cover artwork by industry heavyweights, including Gabriel Hardman, Tim Seeley, Art Adams, Walter Flanagan, and Jay Shaw.
Ash Williams, the hero of horror franchise Army of Darkness and reluctant "Chosen One" in the war against demons, has encountered so many strange happenings over the years, but nothing could have prepared him for his latest misadventure. Catapulted into the depths of space, Ash must confront the Deadites in a place where no one can hear his screams... or his chainsaw... or his boomstick! What do the forces of the evil dead want with the International Space Station... and can our square-jawed protagonist prevent Armageddon?
"Ash is kind of the ultimate screwball knucklehead, and he really has no business being the 'Chosen One' in the battle against ultimate darkness. That's what makes him such a compelling underdog," says Bunn, whose new Army of Darkness series follows on the heels of his contribution to November's Army of Darkness #1992.1 one-shot special. "With this new series, we're taking the 'fish out of water' storyline to the next level, because not only is Ash fighting the Deadites, he's doing so in the depths of space! With such a strange set-up, it might be easy to think that this is a big departure from what we've seen before, but my goal has been to make this 'feel' very much like it belongs in the same family as the source material, even though the setting is so vastly different."
Cullen Bunn is a freelance writer perhaps best known for Marvel Comics' popular Deadpool and Magneto series, as well as the Oni Press series The Damned and The Sixth Gun. He is also a short story writer and novelist; his major publications outside of the comic book sphere include Crooked Hills and Creeping Stones & Other Stories. He has been nominated for the Bram Stoker Award (2012), the Eisner Award (2012), and the Ghastly Awards (2011), and is the winner of Broken Frontier's "Best Writer Independent" Award (2011).
Army of Darkness is a 1992 fantasy/comedy film with strong horror elements starring Bruce Campbell (Burn Notice) and Embeth Davidtz, the third installment in a trilogy featuring reluctant hero Ash Williams. Directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), the film saw its tough-as-nails, wise-cracking protagonist transported from the modern era to the Dark Ages in his continuing war against demonic evil. Army of Darkness generated a dedicated fan following for its premise and lead actor.
"Cullen Bunn has been tearing up the comic book universe with his work on Deadpool -- an offbeat, unpredictable explosion of mirth and mayhem -- and it's just that sort of frenetic storytelling that makes Cullen the perfect fit for the Army of Darkness world," says Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "Larry Watts is the icing on the cake, because his comic and horror sensibilities are just right to bring Cullen's script to life. We're taking Ash to the stars on his biggest adventure yet, and you'll never believe what happens next."
Army of Darkness #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' October Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in December. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Army of Darkness #1 with their local comic book retailers. Army of Darkness will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE DEATH OF APOLLO #1
Writer: DAN ABNETT
Art: DIETRICH SMITH
Covers: MIKE MAYHEW, DIETRICH SMITH, LIVIO RAMONDELLI
32 PGS / Teen + / $3.99
Dynamite Entertainment is proud to reveal one of the biggest secrets of the Battlestar Galactica mythos in the upcoming miniseries event, Battlestar Galactica: The Death of Apollo. The Death of Apollo reunites the creative team of fan-favorite comic book writer Dan Abnett (one of the architects of the Guardians of the Galaxy phenomenon) and talented artist Dietrich Smith in a heart-wrenching chronicle of the iconic Viper pilot's last days -- an event hinted at during official TV series continuity but never before revealed.
When Battlestar Galactica first captured the hearts of sci-fi fans in 1978, the bold starfighter pilot Captain Apollo stood out as the central character of the series, defending the fleet from the Cylon menace as deftly portrayed by actor Richard Hatch. After the original series came to an end in 1979, the sequel series Galactica 1980 continued the tale of the nomadic fleet, but set years after the events of the previous run. Captain Apollo was no longer a member of the cast, and in-story dialogue strongly implied that the implacable hero had met his demise in the intervening years. Dynamite Entertainment, for the first time ever, fills in the gap between Battlestar Galactica and Galactica 1980 which officially reveals the fate of the beloved character.
The solicitation for Battlestar Galactica: The Death of Apollo #1 sets the stage for the action of this milestone event:
"The shocking new Battlestar Galactica event starts here! The fleet has been travelling for 10 years, and at last the human survivors seem to be leaving the war and the Cylons behind them. But the threats never go away. A voice from the past and a bizarre twist of fate leads Galactica into danger once again, and events will take place that will change everything, forever. A milestone in Battlestar continuity, by Guardians of the Galaxy writer Dan Abnett and cosmic superstar artist Dietrich Smith."
"During one of our editorial meetings, it came to light that Apollo -- whom many would consider to be the very soul of the original BSG series -- had died tragically off-screen in-between the 1978 and 1980 Galactica shows," says Nick Barrucci, Dynamite Publisher and CEO. "We realized that we had not just an opportunity, but a responsibility to the fans, to shed light on the character's noble sacrifice. The first person who came to mind to write such an important story was Dan Abnett. Thankfully, he agreed and turned in an amazing pitch. The term 'blaze of glory' cannot even begin to describe what Dan Abnett and Dietrich Smith have planned for the Galactica's favorite son."
Dynamite Entertainment has been publishing Battlestar Galactica comic books since 2006, focusing on each incarnation of the franchise from the classic continuity of the 1978 television series, to the Galactica 1980 follow-up, and finally to the re-imagined series aired on SyFy from 2003 through 2009. Recently, Dynamite has published a bestselling Battlestar Galactica series by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning set in the classic continuity, as well as a miniseries focusing on Galactica's scoundrel with a heart of gold, Starbuck.
I remember being vaguely curious some 34 years ago how Apollo died, but I don't think I've given it much thought since Galactica 1980 aired!

SHAFT #1
Writer: DAVID WALKER
Art: BILQUIS EVELY
Covers: DENNIS COWAN, BILL SIENKIEWICZ, FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA, MICHAEL AVON OEMING, ULISES FARINAS, MATT HALEY
32 Pages / Mature / $3.99
Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the signing of writer David F. Walker and artist Bilquis Evely to its upcoming Shaft comic book, based on the hard-hitting detective created by novelist Ernest Tidyman and popularized in films featuring Richard Roundtree and Samuel L. Jackson. Slated for release in December, Shaft #1 celebrates the 45th anniversary of an American icon with a wealth of cover art options by industry talents including Francesco Francavilla, Michael Avon Oeming, Ulises Farinas, Matt Haley, Sanford Greene, and a landmark collaboration between Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz.
John Shaft, described as a "tough, take-no-guff detective" and "private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks" in composer/singer Isaac Hayes' Oscar-winning "Theme from Shaft," has gone toe-to-toe with organized crime bosses, stood up to the cops, squared off against kidnappers, and foiled assassination attempts in his novel and film appearances. But who was John Shaft before he became the hardboiled investigator with a reputation as big as New York City itself? For the first time ever, the detective's origins are explored, courtesy of the new series by Dynamite Entertainment.
"Working on Shaft, one of the most iconic characters in pop culture, is a dream come true," says David F. Walker. "I've been a fan of the character since I was a kid, and especially love him in his original iteration, as created by author Ernest Tidyman. My take on Shaft is steeped in Tidyman's work, and builds on the world created in the original novels. I'm exploring who he is as a man, as a private detective, and as a cold-blooded killer. This John Shaft is much grittier, more badass, with a complexity never seen in the films. The name may be familiar, and some aspects of the character may be recognizable, but at the end of the day, he will be something new and exciting -- especially in the world of comics. This is Shaft the way Shaft was meant to be."
David F. Walker is an award-winning journalist, filmmaker, and author of the Young Adult series The Adventures of Darius Logan. His publication BadAzz MoFo became internationally known as the indispensable resource guide to black films of the 1970s, and he is co-author of the book Reflections on Blaxploitation: Actors and Directors Speak. His work in comics includes the series Number 13 (Dark Horse Comics), The Army of Dr. Moreau (Monkeybrain Comics), and The Supernals Experiment (Canon Comics).
Bilquis Evely is a rising star on Dynamite's roster of talented artists. Recently she worked alongside writer Chris Roberson on the critically acclaimed Doc Savage miniseries. Her other works include The Shadow / Green Hornet: Dark Nights crossover event with writer Michael Uslan, The Shadow Annual #1, and Miss Fury. Evely's experience with Dynamite's pulp heroes has made her the perfect fit for the mean streets of 1970's New York City in Shaft.
"The response by the media and fans over the announcement of a Shaft comic book series was nothing short of electric," says Nick Barrucci, Publisher and CEO of Dynamite Entertainment. "Frankly, there's no one better suited to take the reins on this project than David F. Walker, whose vast knowledge of and appreciation for the genre have been welcome and invaluable in our launch of the Shaft series. Combining his energetic take on this superbad private detective with Bliquis Evely's impressive artistic skills, we have all the makings of an explosive comic for Shaft fans to love."
This could be good stuff, or hilariously awful.
DYNAMITE ANNOUNCES SHAFT PUBLISHING DEAL
DEAL INCLUDES ORIGINAL COMICS AND PROSE, AND RIGHT TO RE-PRINT EXISTING NOVELS OF ICONIC CHARACTER
Dynamite Entertainment announced today their agreement to bring John Shaft into the Dynamite fold! The agreement covers not only original comics and graphic novels, but also new prose, and includes the right to re-print all existing Shaft novels.
John Shaft is a fictional character created by writer Ernest Tidyma. A tough, take no guff detective who composer/singer Isaac Hayes described him, in the Oscar-winning Theme from Shaft as: "the Black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks."
Most people are familiar with John Shaft via the movies, the original 1971 film, and it's two sequels, all starring actor Richard Roundtree in the title role, which helped spawn the 70's blaxploitation film movement, and make Shaft a household name. There was also a Shaft film in 2000 with Samuel L. Jackson reprising the role as Shaft's nephew.
But between 1970 and 1975, Ernest Tidyman actually wrote seven Shaft novels:
Shaft (1970)
Shaft Among the Jews (1972)
Shaft's Big Score (1972)
Shaft Has a Ball (1973)
Goodbye, Mr. Shaft (1973)
Shaft's Carnival of Killers (1974)
The Last Shaft (1975)
These novels have long been out of print, and Dynamite intends to bring these back and make them available again. In addition, the new prose stories and Original Graphic Novels will be the first new Shaft stories, outside of the movie, since Tidyman's passing. Further editorial plans for new comics and prose will be announced at a later date.
Ernest Tidyman was quoted on the origins of Shaft: "The idea came out of my awareness of both the social and literary situation in a changing city. There are winners, survivors & losers in the New York scheme of things. It was time for a black winner, whether he was a private detective or an obstetrician."
Curtis Brown literary agent Steve Kasdin, who represents the Tidyman estate said: "The literary craftsmanship that built John Shaft sent him into the world fully formed and moving. You knew who and what he was from Jump Street. So much so that even a less than stellar sequel or two didn't kill his standing. The consensus seemed to be: ‘Oh my
Lord, they done put poor Shaft in another bad movie.' I'm thrilled with Dynamite's vision for Shaft, and look forward to his new adventures."
"John Shaft is an American Icon, with feature films starring Richard Roundtree and Samuel L. Jackson. Shaft has resonated in popular culture because he's such a cool, compelling character. We couldn't be more happy that we're getting a chance to tell new stories in multiple mediums, with all new prose in addition to Original Graphic Novels, and create a publishing program that will bring Shaft back to the forefront of pop culture, where he belongs!" said Nick Barrucci, CEO/Publisher of Dynamite.

Often described as “Runaways meets Lost,” MORNING GLORIES by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma is getting its very own massive compendium edition that collects the first 38 issues of the supernatural suspense series.
Over 1,048 pages, six brilliant new students find something much different from what they expected within the walls of what, to outsiders, looks like a prestigious college preparatory boarding school. Pit against each other in deadly battles of wits and wills, the students meet the insurrectionist Truants and begin to unravel the sinister secrets of Morning Glory Academy.
A cult hit among fans who analyze and theorize where the twisting plot points are heading (such as in the MGA Study Hall at Multiversity Comics and the Morning Glories Wiki), MORNING GLORIES now has the perfect volume for readers who want to delve into its world and perhaps answer the question “What did you see when your eyes were opened?”
MORNING GLORIES VOLUME 1 COMPENDIUM by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma (additional art by Rodin Esquejo)
An in-depth discussion of MORNING GLORIES with writer Nick Spencer at Comics Alliance:
"... the fandom for this thing, the community around this book, is so amazing to me. That’s the most rewarding part of all this: the fantastic annotation at Study Hall, and the Tiny Chats we’ve started over the past few issues where we’re gathering with the fans and talking over there, the Tumblr tag… all of this stuff that’s sprung up around the book, it’s incredible to me. I don’t think that any book has the infrastructure and community and analysis around it that Morning Glories has. That’s surpassed anything I ever dreamed of. I look at that and say, 'I wouldn’t trade my career with anybody’s, just because no one else writes this book.'"

RASPUTIN #1 combines the dark horror of Dracula with the historically rich drama of Downton Abbey. In one night Rasputin was poisoned, beaten, stabbed, shot in the head, drowned, then tied up and thrown in a frozen river. It was really bad timing. His beard was just coming in nicely.
The feedback we’ve had on this book is amazing,” said Grecian. “It feels like this is the best work Riley and I have ever done together and we’re thrilled that so many readers seem to agree. Rasputin is going to stay alive for a long time to come. We’ve got big plans for him.”
RED CITY (TPB)
Story: DANIEL COREY

Collects RED CITY #1-4
Cal Talmage thought it would be a pretty simple job: find an ambassador’s daughter, who has disappeared in Mars Central City, and keep her safe until treaty negotiations between Venus and Mercury have ended. But the protagonist of the new Image Comics graphic novel RED CITY should have known better — nothing is ever simple in The Big Red, especially when you’re throwing yourself in the midst of rival alien mafias, political conspiracies, and the threat of interplanetary war.
Classic hardboiled suspense matches up with sci-fi glitz and grit in this graphic novel by Daniel Corey (MORIARTY), Anthony Diecidue (MORIARTY), and Mark Dos Santos (IMPERIAL). Inspired by classic noir stories, writer Corey places his conflicted hero in a complex world where right and wrong aren’t clear-cut.
“The hard-boiled noir hero’s struggle is a spiritual one, in my view,” said Corey in an interview about RED CITY at Flickering Myth. “He or she contends with forces greater than themselves, and must gather arcane facts and clues in order to find their way out of the maze. And the results are usually gray and ambiguous.”
RED PLANET collects #1-4 of the series, plus the new short story MORIARTY: ENDGAME by Corey and Diecidue. It will be in comic book stores on December 3, in bookstores on December 16, and is available now for pre-order.
Praise for RED CITY:
“RED CITY is right up my alley: film noir mixed with fantasy/sci-fi, topped with elements of an episode of Angel, and complete with a likable, rogue leading man a la Han Solo. It left me wanting more!” -- Adam Huss (star of Starz Entertainment’s Power, Dark Highway’s Resurrection County, True Auteur’s Misirlou)
“Sparkling sci-fi noir awesomeness.” –Joshua Hale Fialkov (writer PUNKS, The Bunker, The Life After)
“If Joss Whedon had intended Firefly to be a noirish detective dramedy, it would have been a dead ringer for Daniel Corey’s Red City. Corey matches Whedon’s humor, wit, and underdog mentality, while deftly shepherding the noir genre to a modern audience.” –Barbra Dillon, Fanboy Comics
“If you are captivating by classic noir and science fiction, then do not pass up buying Red City!” -- Michel Birttany, Bleeding Cool
“... great story and tons of style.” -- Joey Caswell, All-Comic

SOVEREIGN (TPB)
Story: CHRIS ROBERSON
Art / Cover: PAUL MAYBURY
136 PAGES / FC / M / $14.99
Collects SOVEREIGN #1-5, plus extras
An epic fantasy in the tradition of Game of Thrones, SOVEREIGN is set in a world which once knew gods, demons and magic, and to which all three are returning. New York Times bestseller CHRIS ROBERSON (iZombie, Edison Rex) joins artist PAUL MAYBURY (AQUA LEUNG, Catalyst Comix) to tell the story of masked undertakers facing the undead with swords, of civil wars and cultures in collision, of ancient threats emerging from the ashes of history to menace the future. SOVEREIGN is a lush, dark fantasy which reveals an expansive world of clashing religions and philosophies, rich cultures and untold horrors.
In Khend, “Land of a Thousand Gods,” the old traditions of the Luminari, who conduct the rites of the dead, burning the bodies to keep them from being vessels for dark powers, are fading. Three Luminari journey to the court of the Emperor to warn of the Convergence, an event that will raise the dead, while power struggles within the court threaten the empire.
Writer Roberson has been a science fiction and fantasy author for many years, but SOVEREIGN marks his first foray into epic fantasy, as he related in an interview on the Image Comics website.
“I’d always wanted to do a big, sprawling ‘secondary world’ fantasy (as they’re called in the prose world),” Roberson told Multiversity Comics, “and had wanted to do a story that was about different cultures in collision, with their various philosophies and religions and outlooks.”
Artist Maybury’s drawing strategy reflected the themes of colliding cultures.
“Part of what I like about fantasy as a genre is the idea of it coming from within,” he said. “If I have to draw an elephant, I first want to draw whatever default elephant is in my head. Then I’ll go look one up and bring some of those details into the drawing. The same goes for people and architecture. It keeps everything loose, and leaves the door halfway open to follow history and culture just enough to give you an idea of what to expect, but also allows me to pull from different cultures and ideas that might not be historically or even geographically present.”
Praise for SOVEREIGN:
“Roberson and Maybury have created a vast and deep fantasy world that any fan can and should get lost in.” -- Kyle Welch, All-Comic
“... an intellectually stimulating read on every level. Roberson’s writing and Maybury’s art conspire to build a world that you have to participate in to understand…” -- Michelle White, Multiversity Comics
“... this book achieves a rare kind of world-building that envelops you from the moment you read the first page… The richness of that story crafting combines well with the consistently brilliant art of Paul Maybury, who continues to affirm his self as a premiere action-oriented / monster artist, the likes of Jeff Stokoe and Paul Pope.” -- Mike Sains, Capeless Crusader

TOOTH & CLAW #2
Story: KURT BUSIEK
Art / Cover A: BENJAMIN DEWEY
Cover B: ALEX ROSS
32 PAGES / FC / M / $2.99
TOOTH & CLAW, the exciting new fantasy epic from bestselling writer Kurt Busiek (Marvels, Astro City), artist Benjamin Dewey (I Was the Cat, Tragedy Series), Eisner-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire (THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS, PRETTY DEADLY), and letterer John Roshell of Comicraft will feature a very special variant cover by artist Alex Ross of Marvels and Kingdom Come fame.
In TOOTH & CLAW, a secret conclave of wizards brings a legendary champion forward through time from the forgotten past to save the world—with disastrous consequences. Featuring swords, sorcery, beast-wizards, gods, vast animal empires, golems of radioactive decay, crystalline badlands, con women, ancient armories, young love, mystery, blood and death and treachery and destiny … TOOTH & CLAW is the sprawling, world-building fantasy series readers won't want to miss out on.
Ross’s creative process was immediately inspired by TOOTH & CLAW’s fantasy-feel when approaching his variant cover. "The world in TOOTH & CLAW is kind of a quasi-medieval fantasy, joined with classical designs,” said Ross. “That made me think of paintings like The Raft of the Medusa, and I wanted to capture that feeling, with the characters and situations from the series. Although really, the only reference I had was the Pogues album, Rum, Sodomy & The Lash, so in a way, that was my reference and my inspiration."
"It's an unusual subject for Alex,” added Busiek. “But he's painted such a wild range of stuff for Astro City that I was sure he'd do something amazing. So I showed him the art to the first issue, and he was glad to join in. And he really outdid himself, I'd say -- it's a gorgeous, moody cover that really encapsulates what's going on in this world."
Ross was also influenced by Dewey’s caliber of artwork. "At this point, we all know what great work Kurt can do, but look at this awesome artwork by Ben Dewey!” said Ross. “This is some of the most impressive and elaborate illustration you can find in comics. How often do you see a world of animal protagonists in a comic story related with such realism and pathos? This book looks damn unique to me, and isn’t that what we should all be looking for?"
WHITE LIKE SHE (TPB)
Writer/Art/Cover: BOB FINGERMAN
136 PAGES / B&W / M / $14.99
Louella Schwartz and Luther Albert Joyce -- one a white teenage girl with a Ms. magazine subscription, the other a middle-aged African-American man who’s fallen on rough times. Their paths seem destined never to cross, but, in an extraordinary set of circumstances, Luther’s brain ends up in Louella’s body in WHITE LIKE SHE by Bob Fingerman (MINIMUM WAGE), which gets a sleek new Image Comics edition in December.
Originally published in 1993, Fingerman’s graphic novel is a cutting satire exploring gender and race privilege with the creative abandon of a grindhouse film.
"What I’d set out to do was pulp with a message. Something Roger Corman might have made in the early ’70s, hence the new Blaxploitation poster-style cover,” wrote Fingerman in the Afterword of the new edition. “Really, that’s what White Like She is -- pulp that could use a little more juice and pits. I still think it’s a fun idea; the beast with two heads minus a head. Race, gender and body-swapping is a fun concept."
WHITE LIKE SHE takes a cue from the ’70s exploitation movie playbook and mixes message, humor, violence and Frankensteinian brain-juggling. Featuring never-before-seen bonus material and newly added gray tone, this is the definitive edition.
Praise for WHITE LIKE SHE:
“A grim and ambitious work -- very, very realisticially executed." -- Will Eisner
"If there were any justice in the world, fans of brain-related entertainment would have their own glossy magazine... A comic as good as White Like She would undoubtedly merit a cover story. Fingerman would be a god to these people." -- The Comics Journal

As revealed at io9.com, writer and comedian Tim Siedell (@badbanana, Star Wars: Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows) is joining Harvey Award nominees James Asmus (Quantum and Woody, The Delinquents) and Pere Pérez (Archer & Armstrong) to launch the world’s worst superhero team into an overloaded adventure that only a VALIANT-SIZED 40-page giant could possibly handle!
When an asteroid with a fifty-fifty chance of hitting Earth is spotted hurtling toward the planet, the unlikely super-team of Quantum and Woody are drafted onto the international team of specialists tasked with stopping it! But when the duo inadvertently cause a training exercise to go horribly wrong, they manage to doom the entire planet along with the only team capable of saving it. With few options and less time, Woody decides to ditch our world and escape into another through a secret space-time rift created by his arch-nemesis – old timey clone-Frankenstein-robot Thomas Edison! (No … you shouldn't ask.) Our Woody's betrayal, however, leaves the door to our dimension open to THEIR counter-Woody and his own counter-asteroid … leaving two worlds in the balance as two Woodys cut a reckless rampage through the multiverse! (Yes … it's complicated.)
"A giant Earth-crushing asteroid is heading this way, forcing an uneasy alliance of international and interpersonal foes to put aside differences and work together to save mankind," writer Tim Siedell told io9.com. "Quantum and Woody join forces with Edison, as well as a North Korean superhero and a rabidly anti-Semitic, but otherwise genius, nuclear scientist. This is Earth's hastily-assembled Dream Team (or Nightmare Team, depending on how you look at it). It's a story so big it can't be contained on one Earth."
Featuring covers by Eisner Award winner Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals) and acclaimed artist Mike Hawthorne (Deadpool, Fear Agent) – plus a partially completed "Draw Your Own 'Blank' Cover" on virgin board stock by "Most Promising New Talent" Harvey Award nominee Pere Pérez (Archer & Armstrong) -- Quantum and Woody's first perilous voyage into the Woody-Verse might just mean the end of all mankind!
Find out who lives … who dies … and which evil doppelgänger has the best goatee ... when VALIANT-SIZED QUANTUM AND WOODY #1 leaps into comic shops everywhere this December!

Crumb, and a clamshell portfolio, all housed in a deluxe, custom slipcase.
Mature/$500.00
I bought a lot of Zap Comix back in the Long-Before Time, looking for the art of a guy I later learned was named R. Crumb. But I was often disappointed, because he wasn't in every issue, and pretty much everything not drawn by R. Crumb was drug-addled nonsense, badly drawn or -- most often -- both. Spending $500 on a Zap collection seems like a preposterous waste of money.

New World Order Wrap Bagged Variant ($5.99): GABRIEL ANDRADE
Future Tense Variant: GABRIEL ANDRADE
Alan Moore returns to monthly comics in epic fashion with Crossed +100! Set 100 years in the future, Moore has created a whole new world and history with a stunning attention to detail. Examining how civilizations rebuild and how generations grow, Moore weaves a rich tapestry of humanity evolving under extreme hardship, all of which is lushly rendered by Gabriel (Ferals) Andrade. Archivist Future Taylor leads a salvage team working to rebuild the historical record of the original Crossed outbreak. She's seen them in videos, but never any live ones, the Crossed are part of the distant past. Until suddenly, a handful appear, and the blood begins to flow. All is not as it seems as a horrific mystery unfolds and once again Alan Moore redefines the medium.
This masterwork is a self-contained whole new world, no prior knowledge of the Crossed series is needed.
All the covers for the series have been planned out by Alan Moore, with the images enriching and expanding on the series. Clues and glimpses of what came before, and what might be, are found throughout the variant covers.
American History X Wraparound - Each of these will depict a specific time in the past hundred years, showing how things have changed and offering a peek at some key events. Each cover will display the year in which it takes place to help build the full picture.
Crossed Culture: These are all images of how the Crossed have changed the way they live. With few humans left to hunt, and the animal kingdom thriving with predators, even the thrill-driven Crossed have had to make adjustments to their lifestyle.
Future Tense: Each cover is an homage to a famous work of science fiction, and each of those original works ties into themes of this issue.
New World Order Wraparound: These are not for the faint of heart or delicate of constitution. We can't even picture them in this catalog, they are visions of what an ideal all-Crossed world would be. If the madmen have their dreams come true, what would the everyday life look like? These covers are brutally intense images of true horror and may have scenes of torture, depravity and nudity. These are clearly for adults only. Each copy of this edition will ship in a sealed polybag with a protective slip cover over the actual image to assure it can be racked in stores. The graphic pictured here is the slip cover only. Due to all these special protective measures this edition is strictly limited to initial orders.
Also available with a rare Black Leather cover, and Retailer Incentive covers of Red Crossed and Design Sketch, showing the original works of series artist Gabriel Andrade. Don't miss out on the ultra-rare CGC Numbered Edition as well!

MASSIVE: GAY EROTIC MANGA AND THE MEN WHO MAKE IT (TPB)

Writers/Art: Various
Editors: ANNE ISHII & GRAHAM KOLBEINS

280 PGS • TPB • 7" × 10” • B&W • $35.00
Big, burly, lascivious and soft around the edges: welcome to the hyper-masculine world of Japanese gay manga. Massive: Gay Erotic Manga and the Men Who Make It is the first English-language anthology of its kind: an in-depth introduction to nine of the most exciting comic artists making work for a gay male audience in Japan. Jiraiya, Seizoh Ebisubashi and Kazuhide Ichikawa are three of the irresistibly seductive, internationally renowned artists featured in Massive, as well as Gengoroh Tagame, the subject of The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame: Master of Gay Erotic Manga. Get to know each of these artists intimately, through candid interviews, photography, context-providing essays, illustrations and manga. Massive also includes the groundbreaking, titillating work of gay manga luminaries Takeshi Matsu, Fumi Miyabi, Inu Yoshi, Gai Mizuki and comic essayist Kumada Poohsuke.
Edited by Anne Ishii and Graham Kolbeins, and designed by Chip Kidd, this unprecedented survey of manga "made by gay men for gay men" is an essential addition to the queer comics canon; it will introduce the genre often referred to as "bara" (a misnomer for gay manga that has taken on new meanings online) to a new, international audience.
The Massive anthology showcases Japan's most talented and influential gay manga artists, including Gengoroh Tagame, Jiraiya, Seizoh Ebisubashi, Kazuhide Ichikawa, Gai Mizuki, Takeshi Matsu, Fumi Miyabi, and Kumada Poohsuke. In Massive, many of these artists' works are featured in English for the first time; this collection offers an intimate, in-depth look at a criminally overlooked component of Japanese queer culture. In addition to comics and illustrations, Massive features photographs of the artists and their workspaces; cultural and historical context; and interviews with the creators about what it's like to be a gay erotic artist in Japan.
