COMICS GUIDE FOR JAN. 21, 2015

Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. The information in the Comics Guide comes not only from Diamond but from solicitations, press releases and previews released by the publishers, except for random comments by Captain Comics (in blue).

BEST BETS

Here art the Captain's top books of the week. For more information on these books and the entire list, continue on to "This Week's Comics."

BATMAN AND ROBIN #38 ($2.99, DC Comics): Robin has super-powers. It’s not a hoax, a dream or an imaginary story! How will the Dynamic Duo adapt to this change in the partnership’s dynamic?

BATMAN: THE SILVER AGE NEWSPAPER COMICS VOL 2: 1968-1969 (HC, $49.99, IDW Publications): Here’s a blast from the past, never reprinted before: 256 pages of Batman comic strips from the late 1960s, written by Whitney Ellsworth with art by Joe Giella and Al Plastino.

BLACK WIDOW VOL. 2: THE TIGHTLY TANGLED WEB (TPB, $17.99, Marvel Comics): One of Marvel’s best books gets its second trade. This one features espionage adventures with (or against) The Punisher, Hawkeye and X-23.

DOC SAVAGE ARCHIVES VOL. 1: THE CURTIS MAGAZINE ERA (HC, $49.99, Dynamite Entertainment): Despite the name, this book collects the eight-issue Doc Savage magazine published by Marvel Comics in the 1970s. With stories by Doug Moench and art by John Buscema, Tony DeZuniga and Ernie Chan, these are some of the best Doc Savage stories ever told in comics form.

HACK/SLASH: SON OF SAMHAIN VOL 1 (TPB, $12.99, Image): This straightforward adventures series stars a chick from one of those typical slasher movies who survived, and has vowed to kill all those Freddie-like monsters before they kill anyone else. The premise is strong, the monsters monstrish and the art pleasing.

HOLY F*CK #1 ($3.99, Action Lab Entertainment): If you like irreverent, this is for you. The premise is that pagan gods are coming back, so Jesus, Satan and a nun named Sister Maria team up to kick some mythological butt.

IMAGINARY DRUGS (TPB, IDW): This anthology of 30 stories by 36 different creators is, like most anthologies, a grab-bag. If you don’t like the plate-spinner, wait for the next act, which might be The Beatles. You just never know!

IN SEARCH OF LOST DRAGONS (HC, $34.99, Dynamite): This coffee-table book contains more than 200 pages of full-color paintings of dragons. If dragons are  your thing, you can’t go wrong with this book.

IVAR, TIMEWALKER #1 ($3.99, Valiant Comics): The time-traveling Ivar, third immortal brother in Valiant’s cosmology, gets his own book, the time-traveling Ivar. Like his brothers, Ivar has a unique personality, and a unique mission: keeping the worst of the timestream from ruining the best of it.

MARCH BOOK TWO (HC, $19.95, Top Shelf): Congressman John Lewis the story of his involvement in the civil rights movement, and the timing couldn’t be better.

PHANTOM COMPLETE DAILIES VOL 7 1946-1947 (HC, Hermes Press, $60.00): It was comic strips like these that made The Phantom a household name worldwide. “The Phantom” had everything: humor, adventure, romance, you name it.

QUANTUM AND WOODY DELUXE EDITION BOOK ONE (HC, $3.99, Valiant): Quantum and Woody may be the world’s worst superhero team, but they star in a really good comic book. Quantum is an uptight Batman wannabe whose powers only work in proximity to Woody, his half-brother and a moocher, loafer, con man and layabout. Also, there’s a goat.

REYN #1 ($3.50, Image): A reluctant, morally ambiguous mercenary is guided on a quest by mysterious “angel” in a new fantasy series influenced by Dungeons & Dragons, Robert E. Howard and J.R.R. Tolkien. The author's pitch was “What if Frank Frazetta painted spaghetti Westerns?” How all that ties together is in the pages of this new Image series, from a publisher that’s been on a roll.

ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS #1 ($3.99, IDW): Zombies. Robots. Desperate survivors. This series of miniseries has gotten so much support that it’s going monthly.

DOC SAVAGE ARCHIVES VOL. 1 THE CURTIS MAGAZINE ERA (HC)

The Man of Bronze is back with a vengeance! In this brand new archival edition, the harrowing adventures of Doc Savage return straight from the 1970's-fully remastered and ready for action. With art done by John Buscema, Tony DeZuniga, and Ernie Chan to accompany writer Doug Moench, this book is a must have for any and all fans of Doc Savage and his Amazing Five. Revisit the classic Curtis magazine issues 1 through 8 and relive the glory days of the Man of Bronze.

I find it odd that Dynamite consistently refers to the issues collected here as the "Curtis Magazine Era," when Curtis was just the distributor. These issues are pretty obviously the eight Doc Savage magazines published by Marvel Comics from 1975 to 1977, complete with John Buscema artwork. Maybe it's a legal thing.

Anyway, I wasn't all that familiar with Doc Savage when Marvel picked up the franchise, but I did really enjoy the magazine -- enough to find and read some of the paperbacks. And you know what? I found I enjoyed the magazine more. A shame it got canceled so quickly.

Over 200 pages of gorgeous full-color paintings, accompanied by a unique story of world-wide exploration and dragon encounters!

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the October release of In Search of Lost Dragons, a gorgeous illustrated storybook that captures glimpses of the majestic flying reptiles hiding throughout our world.  For the first time ever, the sensational French art book by celebrated storytellers Elian Black'Mor and Carine-M is adapted to English in a luscious, full-color, and oversized hardcover, presenting over 200 pages of dragon illustrations and Victorian-style sketches with a captivating accompanying narrative.

Originally published in France as Sur La Piste Des Dragons Oublies, this fantastic adventure follows an intrepid illustrator and reporter's  journeys from Europe through the Middle East and finally to Saigon in search of the dark caverns and mountaintop perches where the elusive winged serpents dwell.  With the gift of seeing the invisible, our explorer friend records each encounter in a journal of gorgeous, fully painted artwork, capturing every majestic and fearsome visual detail of the scaly behemoths, and accompanies his findings with snippets of local lore as evidence that these hidden beasts continue to shape the world in ways we may never expect.

With its insightful journal entries, newspaper clippings, and incredible paintings and sketches, In Search of Lost Dragons is an experience that fully immerses the reader in a realm of magic and mythology, hidden in the far-off reaches of our own world.  Art enthusiasts will especially marvel at the hardcover's numerous fold-out pages, displaying larger dragon illustrations that measure approximately 24 inches in length.

"Reading In Search of Lost Dragons is a joyously overwhelming experience," says Keith Davidsen, Marketing Manager of Dynamite.  "Flipping through its pages, you can almost feel the same wonder and amazement as its narrator upon his discovery of a long-lost, beautiful beast.  It's full of warmth and wit, and its paintings are breathtaking.  We are proud to bring this masterpiece across the Atlantic for English language audiences to enjoy, and feel very strongly that Lost Dragons would be a perfect holiday gift item for each of the fantasy fans in our lives."

In Search of Lost Dragons will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' August Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in October.  Fantasy fans are encouraged to reserve copies of In Search of Lost Dragons with their local comic book retailers, or by placing preorders through online booksellers.

These are some pretty nice dragons!

"Picking up where the legendary movie with the massive cult following left off!"

I liked the movie, but ... "massive cult following"? Really?

The fan-favorite G.I. JOE ninja is set to strike out on his own in an all-new series, G.I. JOE: Snake Eyes: Agent of COBRA! Debuting in January of 2015, this series builds upon the acclaimed new G.I. JOE series, released last month. With an exciting creative team and a secretive mission, the stakes have never been higher!

Snake Eyes’ shocking return to the world of G.I. JOE will see the long-time hero taking on a new role as a member of COBRA! Breaking DESTRO out of prison is just his first stop on this game-changing mission that will pit Snake Eyes directly against the G.I. JOE team led by Scarlett.

"Snake Eyes has been gone from the pages of IDW's G.I. JOE books for almost two years, so his return alone would make for an incredible story," says series editor Carlos Guzman. "But Mike's idea to have him return on the side of Cobra begs so many exciting questions: What could cause Snake Eyes to join the enemy? How could Cobra convince G.I. JOE's most dangerous warrior to betray his unit? What will G.I. JOE do when they find out the ninja commando has returned… but is now an agent for the villainous organization? There was no doubt that the answers would make this series one of the best G.I. JOE stories ever told!"

Praised for his work on G.I. JOE: The Cobra Files, Mike Costa returns to the world of G.I. JOE, writing this explosive series. Joined by artist Paolo Villanelli, who will provide covers and interior art, the duo will set Snake Eyes against unexpected new dangers.

"SNAKE EYES: AGENT OF COBRA is, without a doubt, the most exciting and action-packed story I've ever written in my six-year history with the G.I. JOE universe,” said Mike Costa. “I wanted to take the dark psychology and intrigue that made G.I. JOE: COBRA so fun to work on, and graft it into the DNA of a big action movie, starring G.I. JOE's most iconic character. It's probably my ultimate G.I. JOE story, and it's really been fun to work on. I'd always tried to approach G.I. JOE: COBRA by asking myself "how could this get worse?" Well, Snake Eyes is working for Cobra. I think I've answered that question"

Find out the secrets of COBRA this January first-hand with Snake Eyes, and be sure to pre-order and reserve a special variant cover by Drew Johnson!

I haven't read it yet, but ... doesn't this seem thematically a little like Garth Ennis' "Wolverine: Enemy of the State"?

An Illuminati celebrity assassin, adorably twisted ritual sacrifices, doomed lovotic space affairs, war toads, G.U.N.T.S., luchador gorillas, and urban languawitches await in this bizarrely wonderful sci-fi-fantasy fueled comic anthology.

Imaginary Drugs is a creator driven exploration of life, love, death and raygun-toting, multiverse adventure. Skirting the fears and fringes and subverting the hopes and expectations of the modern imagination, Imaginary Drugs tackles the possible future origins of human life, our increasingly dependent relationship with technology, and the ass-kicking absurdity of beating a nest of blood-suckers into submission with a cosmically powered baseball bat.

Two thousand years after he betrayed Messiah, Judas Iscariot is still alive, wandering a world he doesn’t recognize. A world where the strangest of fictions have come true:  monsters, immortals, gnome-librarians who monitor human history -- they’re all real. And all Judas wants to do is kill himself. So why can’t he? The most transcendent story of the year is here in this all-new original graphic novel chronicling history’s preeminent backstabber and his quest for suicide.

    All-new Original Graphic Novel!

Current DC Comics have something similar, where The Phantom Stranger is secretly Judas Iscariot, working off those 30 pieces of silver one by one as he lives eternally. This ... sounds a lot more interesting.

“Drifter has the makings of the next great sci-fi western. It has the best elements of both genres mixed together in a peanut butter cup of a comic.” —HorrorTalk

Writer Ivan Brandon and artist Nic Klein’s dark new science fiction series DRIFTER sketches the tale of an abandoned, lawless town in a strange and alien landscape. The third issue of this hit new series will have a sinister variant cover by Marko Djurdjević, ready to pass judgment on those who have yet to make the jump into DRIFTER.

“Marko is one of the best cover artists in Comics today,” said Klein. “His version of the Priest embodies everything I love about the character, I love the design elements but the super creepy puritan eyes looking down at us sells the piece.”

In DRIFTER #3, Abram Pollux heads deep below the surface while on his quest for revenge. There he discovers that humans are not the dominant life form on Ouro.

After Cassie Hack was the lone survivor of the killing spree of a slasher nicknamed “The Lunch Lady” — who was also Cassie’s mother — she committed her life to hunting down killers and supernatural evil. She thought she left that life behind, but in HACK/SLASH: SON OF SAMHAIN, she’s drawn back into the slasher-fighting life when a cult of monsters plot to unleash an ancient evil on the world. With the help of a new partner, Cassie must confront a darkness like she’s never encountered before — and the darkness in her own life.

Created by Tim Seeley, the popular HACK/SLASH series debuted in 2004. The newest chapter of Cassie’s life, SON OF SAMHAIN, written by Michael Moreci (ROCHE LIMIT, HOAX HUNTERS) and Steve Seeley (HOAX HUNTERS) and drawn by Emilio Laiso (3 Guns), will appeal to long-time fans as well as readers just jumping on the series.

“We pick up a few years after the final arc of Tim's series,” Moreci explained in an interview at Comic Book Resources. “A lot has changed for Cassie, and we're going to see her in a whole new way. She's older here, more mature, and her life is shaded by everything she went through and what's happened to her in the intervening years.”

Collects HACK/SLASH: SON OF SAMHAIN #1-5

Praise for HACK/SLASH: SON OF SAMHAIN:

“Son of Samhain is a simple pleasure -- an unpretentious action comic with a strong lead and a Lovecraftian monster god. If that sounds like your thing, now's as good a time as any to come aboard.” -- John Gholson, Gutters and Panels

    Reyn_01.jpg?width=250Story: KEL SYMONS

    Art / Cover: NATHAN STOCKMAN

    32 PAGES / FC / T+ / $3.50

Fan favorite Kel Symons (THE MERCENARY SEA, I LOVE TROUBLE) teams up with Nathan Stockman (I LOVE TROUBLE) for an all new series in REYN, a sweeping fantasy following two unlikely adventurers on the path to uncovering the mysteries that surround their destinies.

REYN #1 introduces the main character of the same name, Reyn, a freelance swordsman and monster hunter who also might be the last of the legendary “Wardens” of the land of Fate, whose ranks long since faded into myth. Haunted and driven by visions from a “guiding angel,” Reyn sets out on a great quest—though he’s hardly the errant knight-type. Along the way he’ll rescue and partner with the sorceress Seph, a member of a coven known as the Followers of Tek, hunted as heretics for their beliefs, but who may also know what secrets Fate holds ...

Symons wanted to do something that was inspired by his love of reading fantasy and science fiction growing up. “Reyn pays tribute to adventures that dazzled my imagination,” explained Symons. “Fantasy tales, particularly Dungeons and Dragons, was a huge part of my formative years. I doubt I was the first kid who wanted to live in epic worlds like Middle Earth, Greyhawk or Hyboria. Tolkien and Howard created remarkably timeless worlds and practically invented the language of modern fantasy. Honestly, it's hard to believe they were created in the 1930s.”

The main character, Reyn, Symons envisioned as a sort of reluctant Joan-of-Arc-type. “His guiding angel is hardly a blessing, because it's just not in his nature to be a do-gooder -- he's too unprincipled for that,” said Symons. “I imagined some of Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name from the Dollars trilogy in Reyn. In fact, when I pitched this to Image, I said the vibe for the series should be 'What if Frazetta painted spaghetti westerns?' His traveling companion, the witch Seph, provides a nice emotional counterpoint to Reyn's moral ambiguity. She was born to a cause and brings passion where Reyn lacks an emotional connection to the destiny that's been forced upon him.”

The Uncanny X-Men had become the biggest franchise in comic books by 1982. Chris Claremont’s writing rose to find perhaps his most poignant and challenging expression of the mutant metaphor in “God Loves, Man Kills,” while his work with Frank Miller on WOLVERINE skyrocketed the character’s popularity. With culmination of Paul Smith’s classic run—featuring the growing romance between Kitty Pryde and Colossus, the first appearance of Callisto and the Morlocks, Rogue’s debut as an X-Man, and the wedding of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor—this Marvel Masterworks is nothing short of a marathon of mutant milestones!
