Titles listed in the Comics Guide come from the weekly list at the Diamond Comic Distributors Inc. website, and are subject to change. BEST BETS
Here art the Captain's top books of the week. For more information on these books and the entire list, continue to "This Week's Comics" below.
CREATURE COPS #1 (of 3, $3.99, IDW): This Special Varmint Unit operates in a world where animals are all gene-spliced together, dealing with cute cut-ups like panda-dogs and dangerous monsters like griffins. Could be fun, could be scary. Win-win!
CRIMINAL VOL 1: COWARD ($14.99, Image): Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips started showing their noir chops in a little-known Image title called Sleeper, and are now back at Image with the excellent The Fade-Out. In between, though, they did a fantastic series called Criminal for Marvel's Icon line -- which Image is reprinting, starting here. Enjoy!
THE DYING AND THE DEAD #1 ($4.50, Image): All I know about this series is that it's written by Jonathan Hickman, and is about the Greatest Generation. That's pretty much all I need to know.
KING: FLASH GORDON #1, KING: THE PHANTOM #1 ($3.99 each, Dynamite): Dynamite is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the King Features Syndicate with five miniseries starring the five King characters under their roof: Flash Gordon and The Phantom launch this week, with Jungle Jim, Mandrake the Magician and Prince Valiant on deck. Then the five miniseries will all culminate in a crossover in May. So if the Darwyn Cooke covers don't grab you, the crossover should!
THE MULTIVERSITY GUIDEBOOK ($7.99, DC Comics): This 80-page whopper promises to tell us everything we'd ever want to know about the DC multiverse, written by Grant Morrison his own self. I don't know about you, but I'm getting in line.
QUANTUM AND WOODY MUST DIE #1 (of 4, $3.99, Valiant Comics): Why not? It's funny!

After a sex-tape scandal, former Hollywood child star turned Z-lister Chondra Jackson returns to her hometown of Effigy Mound, Ill., to find a seemingly impossible crime – a fresh corpse in an ancient Indian burial site. Even weirder, the murder resembles a scene from an episode of her old TV show, Star Cop, a live-action children’s show about a kid detective.
As Chondra starts to investigate, she stumbles upon a bizarre cult that worships celebrities as eternal effigies. And these cult members aren’t just worshiping -- they’re also ritually sacrificing anyone who defies their veneration of the beautiful and famous. Chondra’s probe takes her on a terrifying tour of burial mounds across the world, from Stonehenge to the Nazca Lines of Peru. But what is the link between the cult, Chondra’s hometown, and her own bloodline? Will Chondra become the hero detective she played as a child…or is she in fact the cult’s unwitting messiah?
Written by rising star Tim Seeley (BATMAN ETERNAL, GRAYSON, Revival) and illustrated by Marley Zarcone (Black Circle, MADAME XANADU), EFFIGY is a twisted murder mystery and conspiracy tale that examines celebrity, godhood, and the price of fame.

There’s a dark secret in Gotham General Hospital – a supernatural menace that could infect the whole city! But Detective Lisa Drake of the Midnight Shift has a dark secret of her own … and when this new threat brings it out, the only thing Jim Corrigan can do is get out of the way!
I've read the first two issues, and as I'd guessed, it's sort of the Gotham PD Supernatural Victims Unit. (That's not for real, I just made it up.) And, yep, the Jim Corrigan in the series is THE Jim Corrigan, but it's unclear what his relationship is with The Spectre, except that one of his motivations is to solve supernatural crimes before they attract the Ghostly Guardian's attention. Because, he implies, that would be ugly.
As to quality, the writing has a Vertigo vibe, which is sorely missed. And I didn't care for the art at first, but it's growing on me. Again, it's pretty Vertigo-esque. GREEN LANTERN BY GEOFF JOHNS OMNIBUS VOL. 1 (HC)

In a world where a rhino can be gene-spliced with a dog, freakish animals are everywhere, and the Creature Cops have to deal with them! From vicious gator-snakes to cute panda-dogs, these animal cops think they’ve seen it all … until they discover a nest of illegal hybrids that resemble mythological griffins, and suddenly find themselves on the trail of a death cult with even darker plans…
Panda Dogs! Tiger Hounds! Griffins?!?
Please don’t feed the animals ... your hand!
For fans of police procedurals ... science fiction ... and crazy creatures!
In January 2015, a ragtag group of Animal Control Officers will be facing off against freakish, gene-spliced beasts in CREATURE COPS: SPECIAL VARMINT UNIT, a new creator-owned miniseries from IDW Publishing in alliance with Comics Experience Publishing.
"In this world, gene-spliced animals are commonplace, so instead of dealing with pit bulls or the occasional alligator, they're facing Horned Mastiffs and gigantic gator-snakes," said writer Rob Anderson. "Then, the officers discover a nest of what looks like mythological griffins and things really start to get out of control."
CREATURE COPS: SPECIAL VARMINT UNIT tells the story of burned-out animal cop Al Kaminski, as he investigates a death cult with ties to a case from his past. But, in the style of a police ensemble drama, it also follows all the officers of the precinct, in cases ranging from fighting rings to hoarding.
The miniseries is the premiere title in a line of creator-owned comics from new talent published by IDW in alliance with Comics Experience, the online educational company. According to Comics Experience President Andy Schmidt, "With this alliance, we're offering up-and-coming creators a chance to reach a broader audience, and we're excited to be launching with the drama, madness, and humor of CREATURE COPS."
CREATURE COPS: SPECIAL VARMINT UNIT is written by Rob Anderson (REX, ZOMBIE KILLER; MY LITTLE PONY) with interior art by Fernando Melek (CROSSED: WISH YOU WERE HERE), inks by Novo Malgapo, interior colors by Juan Romera, cover colors by Kevin Volo, letters and design by E.T. Dollman, and edits by Paul Allor (TMNT, GI JOE), Andy Schmidt (Comics Experience), and Bobby Curnow (IDW).
Issue #1 of the monthly, three-issue miniseries ships in late January 2015 and is available for pre-order in the November Diamond PREVIEWS catalog. (Order Code: NOV140526) Each issue will be a full-color, standard trim comic book, priced at $3.99, and may be pre-ordered at your local comic shop. CASANOVA: ACEDIA #1
Story: MATT FRACTION & MICHAEL CHABON
Art / Cover: FÁBIO MOON & GABRIEL BÁ
32 PAGES / FC / M / $3.99
Eisner Award-winners Matt Fraction, Gabriel Bá, and Fábio Moon team up with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon for an all-new Casanova Quinn story in CASANOVA: ACEDIA #1.
In CASANOVA: ACEDIA #1, Casanova Quinn returns to find himself caught between unlocking the riddle of his own past and discovering the hidden history of his mysterious new criminal benefactor. “When we last saw him, Casanova Quinn crash-landed on our Earth from the ruins of his past with absolutely no memory of who he is, where he came from, or anything that happened to him before -- but he knows he was somebody dangerous and that people are out to kill him," said Fraction. "So new readers and Cass alike have the exact same blank-slate context for this all-new adventure in Los Angeles.”
“It’s an L.A. that’s in the thrall of strange occult happenings -- weird graffiti, strange crimes, frightening omens—and it’s set the whole town on uncomfortable edge,” explained Fraction. “Against this hyper-paranoid backdrop, Casanova sets out to investigate the life story of his employer, another dangerous man who, like Casanova, has no memory of his past beyond hints of horrific violence.”
Fraction added: “While Moon and I tell the story of an amnesiac Casanova and what new kinds of trouble he finds himself in, Chabon and Bá’s backups shine a light on what kind of people are hunting him down, where they’re hunting, and why. Longtime readers get a fuller picture and brand-new readers will learn about this world as Casanova RE-learns it to survive.”
The idea came up at the end of a podcast with the two writers when Chabon mentioned a desire to write Casanova backups in the spirit of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s classic "Tales of Asgard" strip. Produced for the back pages of The Mighty Thor, these stories introduced young Marvel Comics readers to classic Norse lore
"When people ask me to name some of my favorite current comic book titles, Casanova is always the first one out of my mouth,” said Chabon. "Now I have to put my mind where my mouth has been! I'm just going to try to reach the high standard that Matt and the Moon/Bá brothers have consistently setting in this book, issue after issue, arc after arc.”
CASANOVA tells the story of a hedonistic thief turned kind-of spy as he navigates the incredibly complex and stunningly psychedelic parallel world of interdimensional global espionage.

“TODAY, TOMORROW, THE GRAVE”
New York Times bestselling and award-winning writer Jonathan Hickman (EAST OF WEST, THE AVENGERS) teams up with explosive artist Ryan Bodenheim (RED MASS FOR MARS, SECRET) for an all-new adventure series fraught with mystery, intrigue, and exotic end-of life care in THE DYING AND THE DEAD, coming from Image Comics on January 28.

OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA VOL. 1 (TPB)
Story: ROBERT KIRKMAN
Art / Cover: PAUL AZACETA
Colors: ELIZABETH BREITWEISER
152 PAGES / FC / M / $9.99
Robert Kirkman, creator of worldwide entertainment phenomenon THE WALKING DEAD, teams up with Paul Azaceta for OUTCAST, the first new series written by Kirkman himself in three years and since the premiere of the AMC adaptation of THE WALKING DEAD, which went on to become cable’s most successful and most-watched television show.
The television adaptation of OUTCAST is currently being shot for Cinemax starring Patrick Fugit as Kyle Barnes and Philip Glenister as Reverend Anderson. Kirkman with serve as creator and executive producer and penned the pilot script.
OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA introduces Kyle Barnes, his tragic past, and his unusual gift. Kirkman and Azaceta zero-in on dark forces in this all-new suspenseful series. Since he was a child, Kyle has witnessed his loved ones become possessed by demons, and it has caused his life to fall apart. He wants to be believed. And he wants answers. But when he goes searching for them, what he uncovers just might bring about the end of the world.
OUTCAST BY KIRMAN & AZACETA blends the supernatural with a realistic setting and follows a complicated and tormented protagonist, characteristics of Kirkman’s storytelling that earned him early praise and success with THE WALKING DEAD. Azaceta builds the dread-inducing suspense with haunting, eerie art that unites intimacy of setting with the terror of the unknown. Demons are here, demons are real, and Kyle Barnes is at the center of it all.

Praise for OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA
“Kirkman knows horror.” -- Darren Orf, Paste Magazine
“Whether you're a fan of things that go bump in the night or just someone who likes good comics, you can't do much better than Outcast. Kirkman and Azaceta prove a dynamic and disturbing pairing, crafting a riveting story that's sure to possess your very soul.” -- Jeff Lake, IGN
“Azaceta really capitalizes on the humanity of Kirkman's story, making it relatable and almost matter of fact. This is not a world of superheroes or even really the supernatural, this is the real world. The hard, unromantic real world, full of regular looking people with (mostly) regular problems. For a precious few, like Kyle, all is not entirely what it seems, and his knowledge of what others cannot see has run his life quite literally and desperately into the ground. Azaceta captures that desperation with absolute perfection.” -- Kelly Thompson, Comic Book Resources
“You'll feel a slight knot in the pit of your stomach even though there isn't anything overly gratuitous about this book. That just shows that they know what they're doing.” -- Chris Guerrero, Comic Vine
“The dramatic and creepy tone of this story accompanied with the captivating dialogue make it a must read and one that I can see becoming a real sensation. Highly recommended.” -- John McCubbin, Unleash the Fanboy

MUNCHKIN #1
Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS
Writers: TOM SIDDELL & VARIOUS

Cover: IAN MCGINTY
WHY WE LOVE IT: As longtime fans of the game, we're jazzed to weave stories out of the world of Munchkin, whether it's from the perspective of one Munchkin, a gang of them, or even one of the monsters that live behind the doors!
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Kick open the door. Kill the monster. Steal the treasure. Screw over everybody you come in contact with. Welcome to the world of Munchkin, a gathering of stories based on the popular game series. It's a laugh a minute, pal.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Based on the immensely popular card game, Munchkin comes to comics! Munchkin takes place in a very flexible mashup of genres. Originally a satire of fantasy roleplaying, it has since then taken on nonfantasy and non-gaming elements. Characters in Munchkin change constantly but never permanently. What do Munchkins do? They play for the win. They are rules lawyers. They backstab. They gloat. They whine when someone else backstabs or gloats. Munchkins are emotional. Munchkins may be clever, but they are never wise. Munchkins have short attention spans. Munchkins may be brave in the face of awful odds, but they are even braver when beating up crippled goblins for their lunch money. If a Munchkin seems to show mercy, it's because he was bored or distracted. After all, even stomping an ant helps you level up.
