BEST BETS

DIARY OF A GIRL NEXT DOOR: BETTY (HC, Archie Comics, $13.99): This hardcover, done in the style of the popular "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series, follows the thoughts of everyone's favorite overachieving blonde as she begins her sophomore year at Riverdale High. If you didn't love Betty Cooper before, you will after this charming look into her hopes and dreams.

GROO VS. CONAN #1 (of 4, Dark Horse, $3.99): As the solicitations notes, it's the most heroic barbarian in fantasy fiction versus the dumbest. This could be the funniest team-up in history, or the lamest. But with the talent lined up here -- Mark Evanier, Sergio Aragones, Tom Yeates, Tom Luth -- I'm betting it'll be the former.

LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36 (magazine, Archie Comics, $9.99): This magazine collects the last two issues of Life with Archie comic book -- the second of which also comes out this week -- with the now famous "Death of Archie" story. This is for those who are just interested in that aspect, or can't wait for the trade paperback that will collect the  storyline from the beginning.

ORIGINAL SINS #4 (Marvel Comics, $3.99): More secrets from the broader Marvel Universe are revealed, including those of Dr. Doom and more of what happened on the day Captain America was discovered in that block of ice. The fourth part of the Young Avengers story is included as well.

STORM #1 (Marvel Comics, $3.99): One of the most famous and iconic female characters gets her own title, as Marvel EIC Axel Alonso says, it's about time. Now if they would just get rid of that dopey Mohawk!

SUPREME: BLUE ROSE #1 (Image Comics, $2.99): Supreme began as a thinly veiled Superman swipe, turned into a metatextual commentary of some kind by Alan Moore, and then faded away. Now it's being re-invented again by the always interesting Warren Ellis as ... well, we don't know yet, but chances are it's going to be a good ride.

TRANSFORMERS VS. G.I. JOE #1 (IDW Publishing, $3.99): Two of the most iconic brands of the '80s are combined in this ongoing series. This is a dream come true for any kid who made his Joes and Transformers fight in their backyard, or those who stayed inside and watched the cartoons. I think that covers just about everyone below the age or 40, right?

ZOMBIE TRAMP #1 (Action Lab, $3.99): The title suggests a lot of lame possibilities, and yes, it's a book about a tramp who turns into a zombie. But it's an odd duck that mixes laughs, horror, action, parody and sluttiness, as Zombie Tramp is about a sex worker turned zombie who can still think for herself and is out for revenge on those who done her wrong. And it appears to be working, as Zombie Tramp is Action Lab's best-selling book, and has graduated from a few miniseries to this new ongoing.

Sporting a slew of variant covers from industry heavyweights like Jerry Gaylord and Josh Howard, Janey Bell makes her way to the Sin City as she tries to reclaim her former life.

Danger abounds, nothing is what is seems and whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas ... forever.

The Action Lab: Danger Zone title is a hit, as preorders top 16,000 copies.

While a relatively new company about to celebrate it’s fifth anniversary in 2015, Action Lab Entertainment is growing quickly as a marquee publisher. With the successful relaunch of Zombie Tramp, Action Lab begins to take it’s place as a destination for top flight talent and innovative ideas. Zombie Tramp will have a limited edition Comicon variant for sale at the Action Lab booth during Comicon International: San Diego 2014 drawn by series creator Dan Mendoza.

The series relaunch will also sport variant covers by Josh Howard (Dead @17, Monster High), Jerry Gaylord (Fanboys vs. Zombies, Loki), and two covers by TMChu (retail and risque variant). AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #6

Script: ROBERTO AQUIRRE-SACASA

Art: FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA

Cover: FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA

Sabrina the Teenage Witch Variant Cover: ANDREW PEPOY

32-page, full color comic, $2.99 U.S.

Offered Again: 2nd printing of AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #1 and 2nd printing of AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #2

“The Nether-Realm”: The unthinkable has happened: Riverdale has become ground-zero for the zombie apocalypse, and the surviving members of our gang have been forced to flee their beloved home. However terrible things have been for Archie and friends, they've been MUCH worse for Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Banished to witches' purgatory after using the dreaded Necronomicon, she's now fighting for her immortal soul! The award winning team of writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla continue their celebrated run on the critically acclaimed series. A perfect entry-point for new readers as the smash horror TEEN+ hit of the season continues! Definitely NOT for all ages!

Two months late. However, I'm less critical of this book's lateness since I discovered that Archie (without fanfare) changed its publishing scheduled from monthly to once every six weeks. When the solicitation dates catch up with that, it's tardiness will evaporate with the stroke of a pen.

Archie Comics, the acclaimed and bestselling comic book publisher that is home to some of the best-known pop culture creations in the world, including Archie, Jughead, Betty & Veronica, Josie & The Pussycats, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and the hit AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE series, announced the unthinkable today: Legendary comic book character Archie Andrews will die to conclude the hit LIFE WITH ARCHIE comic series.

The iconic comic book character, beloved by millions around the globe for over 70 years, will sacrifice himself heroically while saving the life of a friend in the pages of July’s LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36, the final issue in the flash-forward series, which spotlights Archie’s adventures after high school and college.

“We’ve been building up to this moment since we launched LIFE WITH ARCHIE five years ago, and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie’s life as an adult had to also show his final moment,” said Archie Comics Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “Archie has and always will represent the best in all of us -- he’s a hero, good-hearted, humble and inherently honorable. This story is going to inspire a wide range of reactions because we all feel so close to Archie. Fans will laugh, cry, jump off the edge of their seats and hopefully understand why this comic will go down as one of the most important moments in Archie’s entire history. It’s the biggest story we’ve ever done, and we’re supremely proud of it.”

The story will be available in multiple formats, including an extra-large magazine-size LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36, two comic-sized issues -- LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36 and #37 -- and a trade paperback collecting the entire story, written by regular LIFE WITH ARCHIE writer Paul Kupperberg, with art by Pat & Tim Kennedy and Fernando Ruiz.

While LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36 shows readers Archie’s final moments, #37 leaps a year into the future, showcasing how the remaining members of the Riverdale gang -- including Jughead, Betty & Veronica and Reggie -- have honored the legacy of their dear friend. Both stories will be collected in the double-sized LIFE WITH ARCHIE #36 magazine and upcoming trade paperback.

In addition to the acclaimed regular LIFE WITH ARCHIE creative team, the two comic book issues -- sold exclusively at comic shops in July -- will feature a pantheon of artistic luminaries contributing covers to the historic issue, including Mike Allred, Cliff Chiang, Tommy Lee Edwards, Francesco Francavilla, Adam Hughes, Pat & Tim Kennedy, Ramon Perez, Alex Ross, Jeff Shultz, Walt Simonson,  Fiona Staples and Jill Thompson.

I hate to say it, but I'm looking forward to "Year Zero" ending. A year is a long time for a story to run, plus I can't force myself to take The Riddler seriously, plus the premise of this story forces even my exaggerated suspension of disbelief to blink. A super-villain reduces an American city to the Stone Age and rules as a dictator for an entire year, and the state Gotham City is in (whatever that is) and the federal government do nothing?!?? Sorry, not happening. It would be  a few days, a week on the outside before the Marines came in, hostages notwithstanding.

As Lord Superman stands on the edge of triumph against a physically and emotionally exhausted Justice League, Terry McGinnis returns from the Justice Lords’ world armed with a secret weapon! Don’t miss the stunning conclusion of “Justice Lords Beyond.”

One of the things I found disappointing about Justice League Beyond was how weak it was. Outside of Big Barda and the pacifist Green Lantern, these guys could be taken down by your average street gang of today. So they wouldn't have the slightest chance against a single member of the Justice Lords, much less Lord Superman.

Which shows a real paucity of imagination. They had the entire DC heroic age to play with, and this is the best they could come up with for the second generation? Mark Waid's second-gen characters were much cooler and surprising in Kingdom Come, and that wasn't even the focus of his story -- those awesome characters were throwaways!

    • You've never seen TRANSFORMERS or G.I. JOE like this!

    • Nothing you do can prepare you for the final page!

Two of the most popular comic book franchises of all-time, TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE, will be going head-to-head in a brand-new ongoing series! Written and drawn by comic luminary Tom Scioli (Godland, American Barbarian) with co-writer and TRANSFORMERS veteran John Barber (TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE, FALL OF CYBERTRON), these classic characters will explode off the page like never before!

Based on the iconic Hasbro brands, this stand-alone series is set to explore the intriguing encounter between these starkly different teams. Cosmic in scale, the series will utilize Scioli’s unique artwork to traverse the perils of space and pit the G.I. JOE team against the ominous threats of CYBERTRON. Featuring the characters synonymous with both TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE this will be a team-up for the ages!

“This is a dream project for me,” says Barber, “and I’m blown away by the imagination and the unique take that Tom Scioli is bringing to this project. It harkens back to classic comic traditions -- and to the origins of the TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE characters -- but feels constantly, irrepressibly new!”

“This feels like the comic I was born to make,” says Scioli. “We’re asking big questions. Is war an inevitable condition of life? What is free will? What is the future of man and machine as the line between them becomes increasingly blurred? The G.I. JOE team is trained to deal with dangerous situations and this is the ultimate test of their training. The TRANSFORMERS characters push the boundaries of what shapes life can take in this infinite universe of ours. Perhaps it will be a machine that teaches us what it is to be human.”

Both brands have found immense success over the decades with action figures, feature films, cartoons, comics and more; and have each found unique and avid fanbases. With influential and iconic characters, the TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE brands are globally renowned as multi-media powerhouses.

“We’ve been waiting for the right opportunity for this event, and the anniversary of both TRANSFORMERS and G.I.JOE in 2014 is definitely the perfect time," said Michael Kelly, Hasbro's Director of Global Publishing. "We are very excited to be working with IDW on this project, and I for one can’t wait to read the next chapter of this adventure.”

The tone of the superhero comic, which is frequently compared to that of Mad Men and The Wire, has been praised by critics and leading industry professionals alike. In order to meet customer demand, a second printing of the new superhero comic will be available on 7/23.

C.O.W.L. #2 picks up with more moles, murder, and mayhem. As the C.O.W.L. superhero labor union prepares to enter negotiations with the city of Chicago, scandal threatens the organization and The Grey Raven must keep C.O.W.L. from tearing itself apart. Plus, readers will learn more about what really happened between him and Sparrow.

    Praise for C.O.W.L.:

“With the book's setup out of the way, Kyle Higgins and Alec Siegel deliver some excellent character work here in issue #2, the world of C.O.W.L. affecting those powered and unpowered alike.” -- IGN

C.O.W.L. is a very solid and entertaining read. Higgins, Siegel, and Reis are providing a very fresh look on how super-heroes can function within the world, and the focus is so much more on the individuals, rather than what the individuals can do. … One you’ll want to put onto your pull list.” -- Comic Vine

“American history gets overhauled in C.O.W.L., a new series about the superhero labor union of 1960s Chicago that’s been described as Mad Men meets Avengers.” -- The Hollywood Reporter

“This is no rebooted Justice League or X-Men. The characters deal with strikingly real issues.” -- The Chicago Sun Times

Mad Men with capes. C.O.W.L. isn’t just a compelling Superhero comic, it’s an authentic American story. Higgins and Siegel offer up engaging, sometimes hardboiled characters that Rod Reis paints with aplomb. Definitely a creative team to watch! " -- Brian Buccellato, Detective Comics

"Part crime drama, part Chicago history, part superhero epic, Higgins and company have crafted something truly special with C.O.W.L. A refreshingly original debut with scope, mythology and terrific characters." -- Scott Snyder, WYTCHES, Batman

“Gorgeous stuff. Keep an eye out for this one.” -- Kelly Sue DeConnick, PRETTY DEADLY, Ms. Marvel

Lurking in the corners of your garage, on the dusty shelves of hardware stores, and in your own trash can are the tools and ingredients for creating your own adventures.

Celine and Tucker, the brother-and-sister heroes of HOWTOONS, are kids who see the potential for play everywhere. When their mother challenges them to make something other than trouble, their adventure begins in an adventure-DIY graphic novel from Image Comics!

In 360 pages of discovery, HOWTOONS: TOOLS OF MASS CONSTRUCTION will bring kids into Celine and Tucker’s world, using everyday objects to construct toys that teach real-life science and engineering principles. Co-created by MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” recipient Saul Griffith, Joost Bonsen, Nick Dragotta (EAST OF WEST), and Ingrid Dragotta, HOWTOONS will be published in July.

Together, Celine and Tucker use items lurking in the corners of their garage, the dusty shelves of hardware stores, and even their own trashcan to create their own adventures. Through “The Legend of the Monkey Fist Clan,” the siblings learn to build a tree swing, find out the ultimate first-person shooter isn’t a video game in “The Infamous Marshmallow Shooter,” set up their own workshop, make ice cream without a freezer, play music with a turkey baster, and launch rockets. Along the way are instructions for projects seamlessly integrated into the storytelling that engage kids' creativity and natural interest in how the world around them works. From bubbles to bots, hippo farts to hovercrafts — HOWTOONS is the book for the next generation of explorers and makers.

“We need every generation to be enabled to create their world,” the creators write in the introduction to HOWTOONS: TOOLS OF MASS CONSTRUCTION. “It starts with creativity and inventing one’s own toys and games. It involves knowledge of tools, materials, and process. It will be beautiful as we marry the art with the science, and the design with the engineering. Come play with us.”

HOWTOONS will be getting a moment in the spotlight at the first-ever White House Maker Faire on June 18, hosted by President Obama, where co-creator Saul Griffith will be a guest. Griffith will be presenting HOWTOONS at the event, which “will feature Makers, innovators, and entrepreneurs of all ages who are using cutting-edge tools to bring their ideas to life.”

In addition, artist Nick Dragotta will be at the American Library Association Conference in Las Vegas on June 27, 28, and 29, in the Image Comics booth. He will do a HOWTOONS workshop on the Graphic Novel/Gaming stage on Saturday, June 28 at 4 p.m.

    Praise for HOWTOONS:

"The comic-book art normally associated with action heroes captures the siblings' exuberant, innovative spirits and the format allows for more detailed instructions for project construction. Recommended for creative but mindful budding inventors/designers/engineers." -- School Library Journal

"Earnest beneath the surface but totally free of dorkiness, this is perfectly tuned to inspire creativity as well as promote good work habits in budding inventors and mechanical engineers alike." -- Kirkus

"Large, colorful pictures burst with energy and the thrill of invention as explanations and diagrams,  laid out in sequential art form, make what might otherwise be intimidating seem accessible and engaging." -- Booklist

"Language arts, science, and arts and crafts teachers will find Howtoons invaluable for teaching students to read and follow directions, to use different tools, to work safely while constructing, and even to collaborate." -- Teachers First

    Collects MURDER ME DEAD #1-9

Hanging from the ceiling fan in her lavish Hollywood home. That’s where Steven Russell finds his estranged wife, Eve Kroft -- rich, beautiful, and desperately sad -- a tear-stained note in her pocket pouring out years of pain and regret. Is it suicide? The police think so. But his wife’s rich and powerful family is convinced otherwise, and they’ll do everything in their power to make him pay in MURDER ME DEAD, the classic noir graphic novel by David Lapham (STRAY BULLETS), back in print from Image Comics this July.

As a lascivious private detective systematically destroys Steven’s life, a chance meeting with an old friend drives Steven back toward a simpler time -- to a downtrodden neighborhood he had long left behind and a fateful reunion with a woman who loved him ...

Murder Me Dead is my modern-day love letter to the great noir films of the 1930s, '40s and '50s,” said Lapham. “It’s every bit as emotionally twisted as Stray Bullets, but in the guise of a traditional femme fatale noir."

Hailed as a masterful contemporary take on classic noir, MURDER ME DEAD takes its antihero down an ever-darkening road of obsession, sex, betrayal, murder and dashed hopes. Peeling back the carefully constructed facades of each character, Lapham exposes the true nature of their humanity and propels you toward a final, horrifying revelation.

MURDER ME DEAD will be in comic book stores on July 16 and bookstores on July 29. Sure to enthrall fans of neo-noir, like Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ FATALE and Criminal, the black-and-white graphic novel is available for pre-order now.

    Praise for MURDER ME DEAD:

“A rip-snorting murder mystery with more double-crosses than you can count and enough booze, broads and low blows to keep the reader turning pages right up to the bitter end.” -- Publishers Weekly

“A gutsy, fast-paced comic that knows its influences very well and puts an interesting spin on the conventions of the genre. Great post-modern fun.” -- Tripwire

Art / Cover: PAUL AZACETA & ELIZABETH BREITWEISER

    48 PAGES / FC / M $2.99

Robert Kirkman, creator of worldwide entertainment phenomenon THE WALKING DEAD, teams up with Paul Azaceta for OUTCAST, the first new series written by Kirkman himself in three years and since the premiere of the AMC adaptation of THE WALKING DEAD which went on to become cable’s most successful and most-watched television show. OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA has sold out completely before even hitting its release date.

OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA #1, debuting this week in a special double-sized first issue for just $2.99, introduces Kyle Barnes, his tragic past, and his unusual gift. Kirkman and Azaceta are zeroing in on demonic possession in this all-new dark and suspenseful series. This eerie tale blends the supernatural with a realistic setting, a characteristic of Kirkman’s storytelling that earned him early praise and success with THE WALKING DEAD. OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA’s tone echoes the grave, dread-building suspense of The Exorcist and The Sixth Sense while developing a complicated and tormented protagonist evocative of The Ghost Whisperer. Demons are here, demons are real, and Barnes is at the center of it all.

The demand for the series is so high that it has already sold out at the distributor level, the latest in a series of fan-favorite debuts from Image Comics and Skybound. This hotly anticipated #1 issue will be rushed to a second printing in order to meet customer demand and satiate the droves of THE WALKING DEAD fans in search of the next great comic. For fans of digital editions, OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA #1 remains available for purchase across all platforms, including the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com) the official Image Comics iOS app, Comixology’s website (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

“The Walking Dead was grown out of the direct market, everything it's gone on to become wouldn't have been possible without support from the comic book retailer community,” said Kirkman. “To see Outcast selling out ahead of release like this was clearly unexpected, but it continues a reassuring trend that could see many more homegrown phenomenon that will keep this industry we love vibrant for centuries to come.”

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Robert Kirkman over the decade plus I’ve known him, it’s to expect not just the unexpected, but everything from the twisted to the sublime,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “Robert is constantly developing as a writer, finding new ways to get under the skin of his characters and the ever-growing audience that loves them, and Outcast is probably his most adventurous work yet. Even if you think you know what he has in store for you, this book is going to both shock and scare you.”

    32 PAGES / FC / M / $2.99

    You are not dreaming.

We are trying to communicate with you.

    Local reality has been reinstalled.

    Things have gone wrong.

    The revision has corrupted.

Finding Ethan Crane is your supreme priority.

We are speaking to you from the ultimate bunker within the structure of multiversal time.

    Do not trust Darius Dax.

We are all going to die.

Warren Ellis (TREES, Planetary) teams up with Tula Lotay (ELEPHANTMEN, The Witching Hour) to re-introduce the central Image Comics character in SUPREME: BLUE ROSE.

"One day I woke up with an idea, that came out of nowhere, for how to extend this most strange and storied of 'analog' properties into a new space. A new floor on top of Alan Moore and Rob Liefeld's house,” said Ellis. “And, since I had some time on my hands that year, I emailed Image, and we got my friend Tula Lotay involved -- and her work will be a revelation to people."

Bestselling writer Warren Ellis (TREES, Planetary) and Tula Lotay (ELEPHANTMEN, The Witching Hour) re-introduce the central Image Comics character Supreme with a science-fiction/mystery flavor in SUPREME: BLUE ROSE #1.

Paired with striking visuals from Lotay, Ellis resurrects the SUPREME universe beginning with an ethereal dream sequence that warns the unemployed investigative journalist, Diana Dane, to beware of Darius Dax and ending with a proposition for adventure and intrigue from Supreme himself, “Have you heard of a blue rose, Ms. Dane? Blue roses do not occur in nature. My practice tends to specialise in blue rose cases.”

“As an emerging artist the opportunity of collaborating with Warren on his latest story has been a dream come true,” said Lotay. “Supreme: Blue Rose came about through conversations with Warren regarding a different story that didn't happen. Warren thought my style, which is quite free and loose, would fit the story he wanted to tell and that creative freedom really appealed to me. Indeed, throughout the creative process if Warren thought I was trying to create panels that had a more 'finished' feel he would say 'you're not drawing for yourself, you have to relax and enjoy it'—some of the best advice I've ever had which has also informed my approach to other work.”

Lotay went on to describe how different hers and Ellis’ version of Supreme is. “Supreme really appealed to me in that it passes the Bechdel test with flying colours. I've never spoken to Warren about this, but it's a story with very strong female characters, the women shine through and that's a pretty rare thing to see in sci-fi. I think it's far from your typical superhero story, a million miles from the original Supreme. It's definitely strange, it's a sci-fi mystery with a Lynchian edge. I've fallen in love with these characters and I hope the people picking this series up can get into the strange world we've created.”

Bestselling writer Warren Ellis (SUPREME: BLUE ROSE, Planetary) and Jason Howard (SUPER DINOSAUR, ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN) continue the unnerving alien-invasion hit series in the third issue of TREES. Fraught with suspense and foreboding, TREES explores a future after tree-like aliens have planted themselves without regard for humanity leaving the government scrambling to navigate the implications of an impending takeover.

In TREES #3, Eligia, girlfriend and decoration to the local fascist gang leader, hunts the streets of Cefalu for the old man who pulled the knife on her. What she finds will either kill her dead or cure her heart … or both.

A bite from a radioactive spider forever set a young Peter Parker on a path that would transform him into the greatest super hero the world has ever known, but that’s not the whole story. This July, the New York Times Bestselling Creative team of Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos uncover the Earth-shattering truth about that destined encounter in July’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #4, a tie-in to Original Sin!

On that fateful day, Peter Parker wasn’t the only one whose life changed forever. The radioactive spider that created Spider-Man bit someone else too. Someone who was led down a different path – a darker path.

    Enter … Silk!

“Why was this kept from Peter?” asks writer Dan Slott, in an interview with Marvel.com. “A good question to ask is ‘Who is keeping this from Peter?’ What parties would know about the existence of this person? Why haven’t we seen her all this time since the events of Amazing Fantasy #15?”

“If you’re going to do a big story like Original Sin, where everybody’s got such a big secret,” Slott continued. “You go big or you go home.”

All will be revealed when Silk’s story is fully revealed as the Amazing Spider-Man crashes headlong into Original Sin! And seeds sown here blossom into cataclysmic results for the webslinger in the highly anticipated Spider-Verse later this year! With Peter Parker’s life about to be turned upside down, no fan can afford to miss the first appearance of Silk this July in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #4!

The heart and soul of the X-Men flies solo for the first time in STORM #1, a brand new ongoing series from New York Times Bestselling writer Greg Pak (The Incredible Hulk, Superman/Batman) and fan-favorite artist Victor Ibanez (Defenders, Wonder Woman)!

From a thief on the streets of Cairo to the Headmistress of the Jean Grey School to the Queen of Wakanda and everything in between, Ororo Monroe has always defied a single title. Her desire to better the world was never limited to just her own kind. On a mission to foster good will and safeguard her fellow mutants in her own way, Storm will embark on a new journey.

“If you tell Storm she can't go somewhere, that's exactly where she's going to go,” says writer Greg Pak, in an interview with Marvel.com. “She's got an incredibly strong sense of justice and empathy earned through years of hard experience. And her empathy isn't limited to whatever group she's standing with at the moment. Storm will do the right thing -- as she sees it -- without apology. That's incredibly strong -- and potentially very costly for her.”

STORM #1 marks the very first ongoing series for the character and joins a number of critically acclaimed new solo series featuring female leads as a part of the All-New Marvel NOW! initiative.

"And Storm makes seven," says Editor In Chief Axel Alonso.  "Starring for the first time in her own ongoing series, and joining the wave of new series anchored by female characters -- a list that includes Black Widow, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Elektra, Ms. Marvel and the all-female X-Men -- comes one of the world's most popular mutants.”

    “It's about time," Alonso continued.

You cannot stop a force of nature. She is Storm, a hero with no equal … and the skies will tremble at the sight of their namesake! Get swept up as STORM #1 thunders into comic shops!

    STK642423.jpg?width=150Publisher: HERMES PRESS

    Writer/Art/Cover: Howard Chaykin

Howard Chaykin's new ground-breaking, critically acclaimed revival of Buck Rogers is now available as a graphic novel which collects all four comics released in 2013 with tons of special bonus material: interviews, original artwork, script examples and pin-ups. Chaykin's tale of the new Buck Rogers, Grievous Angels, reintroduces one of science fiction's iconic creations!

Before Star Trek and Star Wars, Buck Rogers captivated audiences around the world and made science fiction a national obsession. Now, over 80 years after the creation of the newspaper strip that became a household word, Chaykin has returned the character and his universe back to basics: Buck Rogers, former World War I ace is accidentally suspended in time only to awaken to a new and different earth, 500 years in the future, fragmented by war and ruled by an omnipotent force- the Chinese. Now, Buck along with Colonel Wilma Deering, begin a new fight, to free the United States!

Includes all of Buck Rogers most famous characters: Wilma Deering, Ardala, Killer Kane, Dr. Huer, and Black Barney together with a host of new characters created for this incredible new Buck Rogers adventure.

    $17.99

Is it weird that I have no interest in reading this until I finish reading all the classic comics-strip Buck Rogers? I know that's a not a prerequisite for the Chaykin story, but some sort of OCD in my brain says, "No, you have to read the originals first."

When - a very long time later - the picture was locked, I could see his input had pervaded the film at all levels."

    Writer: Cullen Bunn

    Cover: Scott Newman

    From BOOM! Entertainment.

WHY WE LOVE IT: There's nothing scarier than horror that hits home-a tale of terror only one or two steps removed from our reality. The Empty Man is a dystopic version of the world we know, where a terrifying disease has taken on almost deific connotations.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Venom) and Vanesa R. Del Rey (Hit) are two of the most exciting talents in the industry, and perfectly in sync on this haunting new crime procedural.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: It's been one year since the first reported case of the Empty Man disease, and no drug has been able to slow its progress. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms include fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, "empty" state of catatonia. As murder cults rise nationwide, the FBI and CDC enter a joint investigation of the Empty Man, hoping to piece together clues to stop the cult and uncover a cure.

I've been enjoying Lenore in GN form. It's black humor, but not as black as, say, Addams Family (the comic strip, not the TV show or movies). Dark gray humor, maybe, leavened by a playful sense of absurdity.

The nineteenth century, expiring with a flourish of Moriarty and Martians, has left the division of Military Intelligence commanded by Mina Murray in a state of disrepair. While she and her lover Allan Quatermain have achieved a measure of eternal youth, recruiting new talents such as the trans-gendered immortal Orlando, the ghost-finder Thomas Carnacki and the gentleman thief A.J. Raffles to replace their deceased or missing colleagues.

Now it is the early years of a new and unfamiliar century, and forces are emerging that appear to promise ruin for the Murray group, the nation and indeed the world, even were it to take a hundred years for this apocalyptic threat to come to its disastrous fruition. From the occult parlours and crime-haunted wharfs of 1910, through the criminal, mystical and psychedelic underworlds of 1969 to the financially and culturally desolated streets of 2009, the disintegrating remnants of Miss Murray and her League must combat not only the hidden hand of their undying adversary, but also the ethical and psychological collapse accompanying this new era. And a lot of things can happen in a Century.

This 256-page hardcover will collect all three installments of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. III: Century. Spanning the League's adventures in 1910, 1969 and 2009, this metafictional epic sees Mina Murray and her dwindling allies race across time to prevent an apocalyptic conspiracy, while the world they once knew crumbles around them. Woven throughout, of course, are countless colorful characters from 100 years of British popular culture, from Marxist opera to reality television, pulp fiction to experimental film, and even a touch of rock 'n' roll.

In the comics boom of the 1940s, a legend was born: the Green Turtle. He solved crimes and fought injustice just like the other comics characters. But this mysterious masked crusader was hiding something more than your run-of-the-mill secret identity; the Green Turtle was the first Asian American super hero. The comic had a short run before lapsing into obscurity, but the acclaimed author of American Born Chinese, Gene Luen Yang, has finally revived this character in Shadow Hero, a new graphic novel that creates an origin story for the Green Turtle.

The moderator on the Institute for Comic Studies facebook page posted a link to a story whose headline read "Was the Green Turtle the First Asian-Amerivan Superhero?"

Rest assured that I (and another comics fan) quickly demolished that silly idea. Kato, Wing, The Chinatown Kid, Fu Chang, Trajak -- they all preceded Green Turtle in comics.

THE ACCLAIMED GRAPHIC NOVEL, BACK IN PRINT!

In the vein of Alison Bechdel or Harvey Pekar, Joyce Farmer's memoir chronicles the decline of the author's parents' health, their relationship with one another and with their daughter, and how they cope with the day-to-day emotional fragility of the most taxing time of their lives. Set in southern Los Angeles (which makes for a terrifying sequence as blind Rachel and ailing Lars are trapped in their home without power during the 1992 Rodney King riots), Farmer details the slow, inexorable decline in Lars's and Rachel's health, and perfectly captures the timbre of the exchanges between a long-married couple: the affectionate bickering; their gallows humor; their querulousness as their bodies break down.
