ACTION LAB ENTERTAINMENT

FRACTURE VOL 1: ALTERED EGOS (TPB)

Writer: SHAWN GABBORIN

Art/Cover: CHAD CICCONI

$11.95
Imagine you’re just an average Joe, or in this case an average Jeff. Jeff lives a care free life in Lower Triton, a city protected from the villainy of the evil super scientist, Malice by the heroics of it’s resident do-gooder, Virtue. Now, imagine Jeff’s horror as he wakes up one day to discover that he’s not only married with a child, he’s both the hero and the villain of the story.

That’s the story of Fracture, Action Lab Entertainments action filled tale of dual identities and multiple personalities. Created by writer Shawn Gabborin (Snowed in, Angry Gnome Comics) and artist Chad Cicconi (NFL Rush Zone, Baby Boomers), Fracture began as a successful Kickstarter campaign and launch pad for the company itself. Now the sold out first miniseries, Fracture: Altered Egos, is returning as a trade paperback collection. In addition, the trade collection of the second miniseries, Fracture: Vice and Virtue also returns. Picking up where volume one leaves off, Jeff tries to move on with his normal, humdrum life, leaving the newly cloned Virtue, with his personality in place to become a full time hero.

Virtue tries to protect Lower Triton while Jeff tries to keep his Malice personality at bay, which isn’t easy when he can’t get the drugs he needs! But life in Lower Triton is not normal by a long shot. Who is the newest villain on the scene, Vice? Who are the Croc men? And just how fractured is Jeff’s mind?

BETTY & VERONICA COMICS DOUBLE DIGEST #232

Script: ALEX SIMMONS

Art: DAN PARENT

Cover: DAN PARENT, BOB SMITH, ROSARIO “TITO” PEÑA

160-page, full color comic, $4.99 U.S.

Betty & Veronica are both determined to show off their moves and become contestants on the hot new dancing TV series “SoDance Mania”! Find out in “Dippy Dancings,” the entertaining new lead story to this amusing comics digest!

As a guy who grew up on Dan DeCarlo's artwork, it astonishes me how closely today's Archie's artists get to copying it. But there's always something, some little something, that reminds me it's not DeCarlo. In this cover, it's Veronica's breasts (too far apart, not adapted to the perspective) and Archie's legs (DeCarlo did male teens that were rangy, long-waisted, and most importantly, in proportion).

Collect issues #13-16.

• Foreword by Michael T. Gilbert!

• Featuring work by Ogden Whitney!

Is this series really only to Volume 4? I'm picking up the PS Artbooks series of this title, and it's up to Volume 8 at least.

And here's another point, and a more important one.

If you like reading comics, as we all do, then you might like to read these old books -- maybe just a couple -- to get a ha-ha out of the way the Old Fellers did it.

But if you're like me, and several other folks on this board (looking at YOU, Jeff of Earth-J), then you want to know the WHY of the books you're reading. And looking at these older books, especially the early 1950s books, you really get it. You understand why Stan Lee did X in 1966, why Jim Lee did Y in 1996. Because somebody else did it in 1952. This stuff is the DNA of our hobby. It may look like weird, inexplicable crap half the time, but if you take a step back, you see the skeleton on which the gestalt of comics was built. And, man, some of it is awesome.

Oh, but not "Spirit of Frankenstein," a run of stories on the same subject that was pretty terrible. See below.

ARCHIE'S PAL JUGHEAD ARCHIVES VOL 1 (HC)

Writers: Various

Art: SAMM SCHWARTZ , GEORGE FRESE, JOE EDWARDS

FC, 232 pages, $49.99

HC, 7" x 10"

You know Jughead as Archie’s loyal sidekick, but wait until you see the trouble he can get up to on his own! Cheer as Jug matches wits with Archie’s rival Reggie, gasp as he tests nutty experiments with his Uncle Herman, and marvel as he eats dozens upon dozens of burgers and shakes! With twice the mischief, twice the pranks, and twenty times the food, Jughead Archives takes you to the weirder side of Riverdale, in this uproarious volume illustrated by beloved Archie artists Samm Schwartz and George Frese! Collects Jughead #1–8 from 1949 to 1950.

I am SO looking forward to this!

Jughead started out as a 1940s kid-gang cliche, but became something else. His evolution says a lot about pop culture -- and America.

The Shadow's living soul is ripped out of time and space and transported to a violent dimension where his powers and abilities will be tested to the breaking point. The Shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men, but there are worse things in the universe than man ...

Dynamite Entertainment is excited to announce the first wave of its all-new Altered States line where familiar characters from Dynamite's comics will appear in brand-new adventures unlike anything fans have seen before. Vampirella, Red Sonja, The Shadow, and Doc Savage will each star in their own story set in a parallel reality in the vein of DC's classic Elseworlds and Marvel's What If! where anything can -- and will -- happen to them.

The publisher has brought on an array of the industry's top talent to help tell these unique tales. Writer David Avallone pulls double duty in this special event, teaming up with artist Ivan Rodriguez for Altered States: The Shadow, and a tale that proves once and more that there are worse things in the world than the evil that lurks within the hearts of men. Then in Altered States: Doc Savage, David and artist Dave Acosta explore what happens when the world's most powerful man is turned into a rampaging beast whose very humanity may be lost forever. Each issue will feature a cover by Billy tan.

"What If? and Elseworld stories have been a part of comics for 40 years," said Dynamite Publisher and CEO Nick Barrucci. "There's always that "Would that be cool" or "what if we had him or her do that" story that doesn't fit in to continuity. Now we can pick some of the best stories and create "Altered States" for our branded characters. These 4 books stand on their own yet will be the foundation for this universe of characters."

Each Altered States story will unfold in a 32 page full-color comic. With a new issue planned for release every Wednesday in March. Fans eager for more info on Altered States should follow Dynamite on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram for the latest updates as they come in.

    This looks darn cool.

Peter Cannon is a world-famous author, an international celebrity and the superhero known as Thunderbolt, acknowledged far and wide as the man who saved the world from destruction. Unfortunately, he has little interest in fame, even less interest in people, and the peace he has created is based on an illusion. Now, as old and new enemies -- unaware of the secret he carries -- plan to destroy his efforts, Peter Cannon must fight to keep the peace and preserve his own existence, while fending off deadly foes ... and mysterious admirers. Collecting the complete ten-issue saga by comic superstar Alex Ross, co-writer Steve Darnall and Jonathan Lau, plus a complete cover gallery and the rare origin story by Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt creator, Pete Morisi (and featuring an introduction by Mark Waid)!

I'm vaguely interested in reading this, but I'd be a lot more interested if I could read a collection of the original 1960s Charlton stories. Pete Morisi clearly had a specific idea in mind for who or what Peter Cannon was supposed to be, but I haven't read enough to know what that was.

This is not my favorite Frison cover, but it still contains what I like about her work, which is women that look like real women, and not pneumatic blow-up dolls. Real women -- whose breasts are affected by gravity, who have lines and folds and lopsided smiles -- are far, far sexier than the girls drawn by J. Scott Campbell, Michael Turner, Erik Larsen and the like.

He has investigated missing persons, adulterous lovers, embezzling partners... and none of it has ever changed anything. Now, Ben looks at his life and wonders what was it all for, really? He resignedly takes on one last case, investigating the unsolved murder of corporate CEO Jason Black's son, an Iraq veteran killed shortly after an anti-war rally. Ben expected that his investigation would take him into the past through photos, research, and interviews. What he never expected was that the trip into earlier years would be literal... as he time travels back to the night of the murder! Will Detective Chambers be able to save the young man's life, and if so, what kind of consequences might it have on the present? From the mind of J. Didn't we all learn in grade school to never give in to blackmail? Because once it starts, it never stops and it only gets worse. Still, if we skip over the predicating event, how this plays out could be interesting, because the philosophical question is interesting.

IDW Publishing is excited to expand its long relationship with Hasbro and welcome JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS to the world of comic books: Jem and company will star in their first ongoing series! The creative team bringing this world full of fashion, art, action, and style to life is writer Kelly Thompson (Storykiller, The Girl Who Would Be King) and artist Ross Campbell (Glory, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), with subscription covers by Sara Richard (My Little Pony, Kitty and Dino).

It’s the 21st century, and Jem and The Holograms are 21st century girls! Meet Jerrica Benton, the gifted singer of The Holograms, a band that has the right look and the right sound. … But one thing is holding them back -- Jerrica’s crippling stage fright. Luckily, Jerrica is about to find help in the most unlikely of places when she discovers a forgotten present left by her father. And what she finds is truly outrageous!

"As a kid I was a huge fan of the original '80s JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS cartoon and so the chance to breathe new life into it for a savvy modern audience, not to mention to work with Ross, an artist practically destined to draw this book, is really a dream come true," said series writer, Kelly Thompson.

Don’t miss the chance to get the five stunning rainbow foil covers that will be available for Issue One -- one for each Hologram by artist Amy Mebberson (My Little Pony, Pocket Princesses), plus the whole band by series artist Ross Campbell -- in a deluxe rainbow foil and hologram collectible box. A second box set for Issue two will feature another set of four covers by Mebberson and a group shot by Campbell -- this time starring Jem’s greatest nemeses, The Misfits!

“Getting a JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS comic going was a top priority for me when I started at IDW,” says Senior Editor John Barber. “It took three years, but Kelly and Ross came in with a style and attitude that really got Jem. They understand Jem’s appeal -- I can’t overstate the impact Jem has had on generations of fans and readers.”

The beloved animated show JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS debuted on television in 1985, alongside a very successful toyline by Hasbro. The show was geared towards young females but was unlike any “girls show” before as it featured a strong female lead and mixed elements of science fiction, adventure and romance.

Hasbro announced earlier this year that a live-action, motion-picture adaptation of JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS from Universal Pictures starring Aubrey Peeples and directed by Jon M. Chu is slated for release October 2015.

I am clearly too old to still be alive. I have no idea what this concept is, or why I should care about it, but the writer says, "as a kid I was a huge fan ... "

Mixing new school with old, comics publisher Lion Forge Comics has partnered with award-winning IDW Publishing to bring the classic TV series Miami Vice to print with Miami Vice Remix. Now anyone who loves the iconic characters, pastels, fast cars and over-the-top action of Miami Vice can get their hands on the comic based on the renowned ‘80s classic television show.

Writer Joe Casey (Uncanny X-Men, Adventures of Superman) teamed up with comic book industry veteran Jim Mahfood to create Miami Vice Remix. The comic follows the Metro-Dade Police Department detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs through modern-day Miami as they go undercover facing dangerous encounters with voodoo, zombies and Crockett’s mysterious past.

“Working with Jim is always a trip and taking on ‘80s TV icons like Crockett and Tubbs was too good to pass up,” said Casey, Miami Vice Remix co-creator and writer. “Whether you're familiar with ‘Miami Vice’ or not, this book will burn a hole in your brain.”

“Comics should be for everyone, regardless of how fans prefer to access and consume content,” said David Steward II, Lion Forge CEO. “With IDW’s innovative spirit, Lion Forge will reach more readers and bring new life to classic properties like ‘Miami Vice.’”

Miami Vice Remix is the latest Lion Forge title crossing over from digital to hard copy through IDW. The comic joins licensed and celebrity titles Rampage Jackson: Street Soldier and Saved By The Bell, which also are based on hit NBC television series.

“IDW is pleased to help re-imagine one of the most timeless TV shows of our generation,” said Greg Goldstein, IDW Publishing president. “The vibrant artistry and high-quality story telling in Miami Vice Remix is sure to bring readers all the energy and style from the original series.”

    OR, HERE'S ANOTHER TAKE:

I’ve got something new for you and I’m not quite sure what to call it. Is it a reboot? An alternate universe? I guess well just call it a remix!

The classic NBC television series Miami Vice changed the world forever. It’s a milestone for every cop show and crime drama ever since. T-shirts-under-pastel-blazers and Ray Bans (you remember) took over the strip. Metro-Dade County became Miami-Dade as a gesture of pride. The show’s ripples through culture and history are still being felt, and now, 30 years later, Lion Forge Comics is bringing it all back with a new, neon-tinted, action-packed mini-series from the eclectic minds of Joe Casey and Jim Mahfood: Miami Vice Remix.

James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, Miami’s coolest undercover cops, are solving wild cases all over Miami Beach once again. They had a hard enough time busting cocaine cartels in the ‘80s, but now, the latest designer drug on South Beach is even worse; it’s spreading like wildfire and an apparent zombie invasion (!) follows. Could they be linked? (Probably.) And what’s Lieutenant Castillo’s personal stake in all this?

This unhinged view of the Magic City through rose-colored gunsmoke features a gripping story by comics superstar Joe Casey (Godland, Wildcats, Adventures of Superman) and vivacious art by fan-favorite Jim Mahfood (Tank Girl, Ultimate Spider-Man, Grrl Scouts). Miami Vice Remix reads like a splatter of fluorescent paint on the pastel backdrop of South Beach -- it’s a vibrant, gritty, and unexpected ride through the city where the heat is on.

You know, I was just blown away by the latest The Walking Dead episode, so maybe I'm feeling a little bit annoyed that anybody thinks Miami Vice was a great show. How do I know? I was there when it came out, a late Baby Boomer -- the target market. And I was living in Florida at the time.

But nobody my age -- 20s and 30s -- thought Miami Vice was any good: We laughed at it. A lot. It was all pretension and self-involvement and getting very little done, just like so much of the world around us in the 1970s, and we snickered at the delusional self-importance of everyone involved.

But here's a press release saying Miami Vice "changed the world forever." Uh, no. It didn't make stars of the series leads, the "Florida" color scheme (hot pink and chartreuse) didn't last longer than it took the most die-hard fans to re-paint the foyer, and pink flamingos in the front yard is now, as it was then, a sign of redneck chic. I wore a linen jacket over a T-shirt once, because my girlfriend wanted to see it, and once she had laughed herself into gurgling incoherence I changed into adult clothes.

But again, I just watched The Walking Dead, which is done very well -- far better than Miami Vice could dream of, and Don Johnson ain't no Andrew Lincoln. TWD is a show that appeals to both the frontal lobe and the amygdala, not just the withered gonads of over-40 Baby Boomers who pine for their youth. After TWD, Miami Vice Remix just seems like an old whore begging for one more dollar.

Um, that was a little harsh. Your mileage may vary.

    Collects SEX CRIMINALS #1-10

It’s big; it’s hard; and it’s coming in March — the highly anticipated deluxe hardcover of the Image Comics phenom SEX CRIMINALS by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky! BIG HARD SEX CRIMINALS, VOLUME ONE collects the first two volumes of the #1 New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and Amazon best-selling, Eisner-and-Harvey-Award-winning, 2013 Time magazine Best Comic of the Year, 2014 Paste magazine Best Comic of the Year, sex-tip-book spinning-off, reader-beloved comic book series.

SEX CRIMINALS is the story of Suzie and Jon, two people with the same secret: when they have orgasms, time freezes. Suzie is a feisty librarian, determined to keep the local library from closing. Jon is a discontented banker's assistant, looking for an excuse to turn on his unscrupulous employer. When they discover they can stop time together, it's obvious what they should do with their extraordinary ability: rob banks to save Suzie’s library.

And of course: complications ensue. And it’s not just that the Sex Police (yes, the Sex Police) are on to the time-freezing bank bandits. Suzie and Jon will have to grapple with what a relationship means when it stops being about just sex and starts being about love.

    Praise for SEX CRIMINALS:

“Sex Criminals is not just one of the best comics I’ve ever read, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever read, period.”  -- Wil Wheaton, actor

“The best debut of 2013” -- Rolling Stone

“Sex comedies usually focus on the pursuit of orgasm; the writer Matt Fraction and the artist Chip Zdarsky have devised an ingenious one about the stillness that follows it. Zdarsky’s fluid, brightly hued artwork is dense with smutty gags, but this is a deeper, more understated comedy than it initially seems.” -- New York Times

“Fraction’s best work yet. It’s a precision-tuned screwball comedy on its surface, and that surface is gorgeous, thanks to Zdarsky’s ace sense of design and inventive color technique.” -- Time

“An honest, heartfelt story about relationships that was more John Hughes than John Holmes.” -- USA Today

“Sex Criminals bubbles over with joyous energy.” -- NPR, Best Books of 201

“I wouldn’t trust most comic creators to turn a sexual awakening into compelling pulp fiction, but Fraction and Zdarsky pull it off masterfully.” -- Paste, Best Comics of 2014

“A sex comedy with a splash of crime thriller, the title is a fascinating examination of the pleasures and pitfalls of intimate relationships, using the central fantastic conceit as a metaphor for the way sex distances people but also, under the right circumstances, brings them together.” -- The A.V. Club

“Wildly imaginative, randy and true with characters whose sexual satisfaction freezes time and facilitates crime. Artist Zdarsky’s staging, storytelling and character designs make this even crazier. Great fun!” -- Miami Herald

“Despite having such a ludicrous, high concept premise — and the pair definitely go whole hog with that, Zdarsky filling porn shops with dirty punning titles and the first issues list of made up sexual positions being particular highlights – the series frequently touches upon serious issues of sexuality.” –What Culture, Best Comics of 2014

“There is no other comic out there quite like Sex Criminals. After its strong debut last year, it now qualifies as a phenomenon with sales big enough to make it a career-defining book for its two creators.” -- Mental Floss, The Most Interesting Comics of 2014

But Stel Caine may be the only one with hope — civilization is deteriorating into hedonism and corruption around her, and she must do all she can to not only save humanity but also keep what’s left of her family from falling apart.

“In terms of her and where she gains her optimism from … it’s faith,” Remender said of Stel in an interview with Comic Book Resources. “Writing a character for the first time that has faith, and has faith in this church, which is based on science instead of being based on a book that was written and mis-transcribed for 3,000 years or something. It doesn't make her a dupe in my mind; it makes her somebody who is the last of a dying breed.”

Artist Tocchini creates a swirling, ethereal environment with vibrant washes of color, while inhabiting LOW’s underwater world with striking characters and futuristic technology.

"Greg and I have been working together long enough that it's like volleyball,” said Remender. “I'll send him some very basic ideas. … And then Greg comes back with concepts and model sheet design pieces that are just out of this f*cking world and give me a hundred new ideas.”

A beautiful, fragile world; a society collapsing under its own decadence; a complex woman whose hope keeps her from despair -- this is the science fiction world of LOW, VOLUME 1: THE DELIRIUM OF HOPE, in comic book stores on March 25 and bookstores on April 7. It is available for pre-order now.

    Praise for LOW:

“Tocchini’s dreamy renderings, and Remender’s confessional tone equips readers to explore the depths of epic grief in this heroine’s tale.” -- Cassandra Clark, Multiversity Comics

“Remender and Tocchini have crafted a rich world, loaded with its own deep history, societal norms and resentments. Watching as this world unfurls and seeing what makes it tick ought to be as exciting as the tribulations of the Caine family. And if we’ve learned anything from Remender’s past work, there will be no shortage of tribulation.” -- Robert Tutton, Paste Magazine

Low is so rich with beauty, yet depressing as hell. I love every page of it.” -- Nick Couture, Comicosity

“Tocchini’s art is, honestly, a revelation. It’s vivid, bright, both loose and tight, it draws you in and you can spend several enjoyable minutes unpacking even a single frame. Making a world in its last years this beautiful and bright in the face of the more recent black and grey dystopic universes is a treat, a gift. Low itself is just that, a treat, a gift, a chance for us to experience a world that is both broken and hopeful..” -- Forrest Hollingsworth, Comics: The Gathering

Twenty years after this promise, billionaire Langford Skaargard's dream of cosmic exploration is no more.

Roche limit: in astronomy, the minimum distance to which a large satellite can approach its primary body without being torn apart by tidal forces. -- Encyclopedia Britannica

The Roche Limit Colony lies at the cusp of an energy anomaly in the Andromeda Galaxy, and on top of a cache of an alien mineral deposit used to make the drug “Recall.” It has become a magnet for greed, crime, a place where people disappear -- both because they want to or someone else wants them to. In ROCHE LIMIT, VOLUME 1, the March graphic novel by Michael Moreci (HOAX HUNTERS, HACK/SLASH:SON OF SAMHAIN) and Vic Malhotra (The X-Files: Year Zero, Thumbprint), Sonya Torin wants to find one of those who have disappeared, her sister Bekkah, who came to Roche Limit to help Recall addicts.

Sonya’s only help on the corrupt, lawless colony in finding her sister is Alex Ford, a shifty drug manufacturer with his own set of pursers who are after his Recall formula. As the search for Bekkah leads Sonya deeper into Roche Limit’s underbelly, they move ever closer to a burgeoning spiritual movement with the energy anomaly at its center.

“Both noir and sci-fi are perfect genres to employ for Roche Limit because both have deep underpinnings in existentialism/fatalism,” said writer Moreci in an interview with Comic Bulletin. “I’ve always contended that the best sci-fi examines who we are as humans, particularly in the context of our social mores... Noir is similar, but a bit more personal…. I want to explore that intersection of existentialism and popcorn fiction as only genre fiction can.”

Artist Malhotra inhabits Roche Limit with weary denizens who move through a lived-in, often dilapidated and grimy setting. “I find it really tough to get my imagination going with stories set in sleek sci-fi settings. The sense of history is lost,” he said in the Comics Bulletin interview. “That’s why it’s more fun to draw old buildings rather than new ones or an old tennis shoe rather than a brand new one.”

    Praise for ROCHE LIMIT:

“Moreci and Malhotra are … succeeding at upending expectations of a science fiction story and regaling us with their tale the way they want to tell it. Through great art comes questioning of perception or simply exciting experiences. This artistic team has succeeded at both.” -- Keith Dooley, Multiversity Comics

“Moreci’s skilful world-building and Malhotra’s uniquely expressive artwork combine here to create something truly memorable; a noir-soaked sci-fi masterclass complete with twists, turns and dramatic, character-driven moments.” -- Michael Bettendorf, Comics Bulletin

“This is a series that demands and deserves to be read by any and all sci-fi, comic, and storytelling fans.” -- Zac Thompson, Bloody Disgusting

    IMAGE COMICS'S NEW SUPERNATURAL SPECTACULAR!

“If Wayward isn’t the next Saga, it will be a damn criminal shame.” -- Bleeding Cool

Writer Jim Zub (SKULLKICKERS, Samurai Jack) and penciler Steven Cummings (Legends of the Dark Knight, Deadshot) spin enchantment and mystery together in a fantasy story about one girl’s battle against the mythological creatures everyday mortals fail to see. Set in Japan, WAYWARD’s depiction of the busy city streets of Tokyo and its rich occult history make it as much a living, breathing character as spunky teen protagonist Rori.

"Wayward is about disaffected youth battling myths of old and, just like being a teenager, it's intense, funny, emotional and violent,” said Zub. “'String Theory' is our first step into this twisted world of modern, mystic mystery and I'm excited to bring readers along for the ride.”

In WAYWARD, VOL.1: STRING THEORY, readers meet Rori, a misfit teen reluctantly transplanted from Ireland to her strange and new home in Japan with her mother. From the get-go there are some cultural adjustments to be made and Rori feels like a fish out of water—but things take a turn for the weird when she begins glimpsing things -- creatures -- that no one else can see.

“Wayward is a coming of age tale that comes up against monsters set in the very real Japan that everyday people experience,” said Cummings. “Well, except they don't experience monsters... With every new step in the voyage we get to take our readers along for a guided tour of Tokyo and its Yokai side."

    Further Praise for WAYWARD:

“… the Young Adult novel has finally made it to comics in the form of Wayward, and I think it will be one of the stand-out new titles of the year.” -- Comic Book Bin

“Bright, vibrant, and alive, Rori Lane’s world will enchant readers with its relatable protagonist, intense action and fascinating mythological allusions.” -- Comic Book Resources

“Sure to please fans of Buffy and Manga.” -- Newsarama

“A fun premise with a quirky protagonist.” -- Bloody Disgusting

"Wayward shows signs of being the next runaway Image Comics series." -- Multiversity Comics

"Another fantastic entry in Image’s already staggering amount of knockouts." -- Comic Bastards

“It’s age-appropriate for a wide range of readers, and it explores Japan from a supernatural angle that isn’t often seen in Western comics. Zub, Cummings, and team have piqued my interest, and I can’t wait to see how a feisty half-Irish teen handles being swept up in Japanese myth.” -- ComicVine
