BEST BETS

consult the "This Week's Comics" section below.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN VOL. 1.1: LEARNING TO CRAWL (TPB, $17.99, Marvel Comics): Dan Slott, the writer credited with rejuvenating the wall-crawler with some of the most critically lauded Spider-stories ever, fills in the gap between Amazing Fantasy #15 (Spidey's first appearance) and Amazing Spider-Man #1. OK, there really isn't much of a gap story-wise, but there was timewise in the real world, given the publishing options of the time. And it's Slott, so it'll be good. Now, if only Marvel would combine this, Untold Tales of Spider-Man and Marvel Masterworks: Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 in chronological order ...
GOTHAM BY MIDNIGHT #1 (DC Comics, $2.99): This new Bat-book seems to be aimed more at horror fans than superheros fans. It focuses on Gotham Det. Jim Corrigan -- and that name, for long-time fans, immediately raises the specter of a Spectre appearance. Of course, the Gotham setting means a certain Bat-themed hero could show up any time. Plus, writer Ray Fawkes and artist Ben Templesmith are best known for their work in the horror genre. So it's likely Det. Corrigan is going to be turning over some mighty strange rocks, and dealing with the creepy-crawlies lying beneath. And hey, how long before the goings-on begins to attract Constantine & Co.? That sounds fun, and given the track record of the creative team, Gotham by Midnight could be pretty good.
FLASH GORDON ANNUAL 2014 ($7.99, Dynamite): Dynamite has taken an unusual path with venerable SF hero Flash Gordon, by introducing a younger, more impulsive, more overconfident version. (That actually explains a lot about the original -- because otherwise, why would a polo player feel confident enough to sword-fight with guys who'd grown up sword-fighting?) Anyway, this anthology presents five stories about the Flash Gordon characters before they became the characters we know, and they're all written by the always-inventive Jeff Parker (Agents of Atlas), so it's probably a lot of fun.
ODYC #1 ($3.99, Image): A new epic SF series by Matt Fraction, it lifts and twists elements of the original Odyssey, starring a wily, female Odyssia in the far future navigating her way home after a long (100 years) war. Since it's Fraction, it's likely to be satisfyingly strange.
SHADOW SHOW #1 (of 5, $3.99, IDW): Shadow Show is a collection of short stories written by modern writers in tribute to Ray Bradbury. IDW has matched these stories to appropriate artists for this anthology miniseries. It may not be Bradbury, but faux Bradbury may still be pretty good.

Interesting how all four of the Archie offerings this week are anthologies, ranging in size from digests to TPBS, rather than the typical eponymous, 32-page comic book (i.e. Archie, Mega Man). I don't think that means anything -- it's undoubtedly just coincidence. But it does draw attention to Archie's unorthodox product line.

SHADOW SHOW #1 (of 5)
Writers: JOE HILL, JASON CIARAMELLA
Art: CHARLES PAUL WILSON III
Cover: GABRIEL RODRIGUEZ
Subscription Variant: SHANE PIERCE
FC • 32 pages • $3.99
In the prose anthology Shadow Show, acclaimed writers gathered to pay tribute to the work of the incomparable Ray Bradbury, known for such timeless classics as Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man. What resulted was a collection of remarkable and unique stories that beautifully illustrate Bradbury’s enduring imprint on the fantasy, science fiction, and mystery genres.
IDW Publishing will take a selection of these stories and pair them with some of comic book’s biggest and brightest artists for a 5-issue series of comic-book adaptations. Shadow Show #1 starts with the haunting and melancholy “By The Silver Water of Lake Champlain,” written by Joe Hill (Locke & Key) and adapted by Jason Ciaramella (The Cape) with art by Charles Paul Wilson III (Wraith) and a gorgeous cover by Locke & Key co-creator Gabriel Rodriquez.
“The pairing of Bradbury-inspired stories written by some of the best prose writers working today made for an amazing tribute book,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and to see them brought to life by such amazing artistic talents not only helps further Bradbury’s legacy, but it’s making for some damned good comics, too.”
“The anthology Shadow Show is a loving homage to Mr. B, so it’s great to see some of these stories in comics format. Ray considered comic strips central to his education and inspiration and Bradbury stories adapted for the classic EC stories helped raise the bar for all the comics that followed,” said Sam Weller and Mort Castle agreed.
Issue 2 will see Neil Gaiman’s “The Man Who Forgot Ray Bradbury,” brought to life with artist Maria Fröhlich, and artist Eddie Campbell will tackle Audrey Niffenegger’s “Backward In Seville.” Writer/Editor Mort Castle and Bradbury biographer Sam Weller, who compiled the Shadow Show prose anthology, are onboard to help bring these stories to life in comic form.
Other Shadow Show stories to be included are Harlan Ellison’s “Weariness,” Dave Eggers’ “Who Knocks?” and Alice Hoffman’s “Conjure” with accompanying artists to be announced. Haunting paintings by Shane Pierce will grace all subscription variant covers for this series.
• A five-issue tribute to Ray Bradbury, featuring stories by some of the most notable names in the writing world -- including Neil Gaiman, Joe Hill, Audrey Niffenegger, Dave Eggers, Alice Hoffman, Harlan Ellison, and more -- with short stories that thrill, frighten, move, and dazzle in the great Bradbury tradition.

SCARLET SPIDERS #1 (of 3)
Writer: MICHAEL COSTA

Cover by DAVID NAKAYAMA
Variant Cover by MARK BAGLEY
32 PGS / Rated T+ / $3.99
• The first issue in an explosive limited series tying into the biggest Spider-Event ever: SPIDER-VERSE!
• In the midst of Spider-Verse, Kaine, Ben Reilly, and Ultimate Jessica Drew must come together for a mission of vital importance!
• There is more to their mission than meets the eye – what dangers await the Scarlet Spiders across the multiverse?
Announced this year at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel is excited to announce a brand new limited series spinning out of the events of Spider-Verse, SCARLET SPIDERS, written by Mike Costa (Superior Spider-Man Team-Up Special, A+X) and artist Paco Diaz (Superior Spider-Man).
This November, Kaine, the Ultimate Universe’s Jessica Drew, and an alternate universe Ben Reilly undertake a quest to stop the evil behind the events of Spider-Verse once and for all -- a quest so dangerous that not all of them will make it out alive!
“Obviously I can’t give too much away just yet, but the group in SCARLET SPIDERS plays a very important role in stopping Morlun,” Editor Devin Lewis tells Marvel.com. “Without this group of three and their mission, there’s a decent chance that the Spider-Men from across the multiverse won’t even survive Morlun’s assault.”
In addition to stopping one of the most fearsome spider-villains in recent years, our heroes will have to learn to cope with one another and that even though they are clones of Peter Parker, they still come from different universes and boast distinctly different personalities.
“Kaine really serves as the entry point for readers to this group,” Lewis elaborates. “He’s a mainstay in the Marvel Universe, now, so that gives him a unique perspective on the events of Spider-Verse as they unfold.”
“The Ben Reilly in this story is from a universe where Peter Parker never returned from his time in Oregon during the Clone Saga,” he continues. “When we were having our first conversations on the phone, Mike [Costa] was intent on working out who this guy is. How does he think? What’s his outlook and how is it different from the Peter Parker we all know and love?”
“Ultimate Jessica Drew has already had a pretty rough go of it herself, and one of the things Mike and I discussed and were intent on bringing to the fore was her sense of identity, especially now that she has seen there’s a multiverse rife with Spider-People,” concludes Lewis.

DAWN OF PLANET OF APES #1
Publisher: BOOM! STUDIOS

Art: DAN MCDAID

WHY WE LOVE IT: BOOM! has a long history with PLANET OF THE APES and for good reason: We love those damn dirty apes. Serving as a perfect tableau to examine society's ills through the lens of science fiction, we were thrilled to explore those themes in the modern setting of the new films.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Michael Moreci (CURSE, HOAX HUNTERS) and Dan McDaid (MIND THE GAP) bring the hardworld of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes to life - dealing with both classic and modern POTA questions of what the true meaning of "society" is, and if being "civilized" is even possible in a world wracked with strife. Great for fans of endstories like 12 MONKEYS, THE ROAD, and CHILDREN OF MEN.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Bridging the 10gap between the RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES films, fans will bear witness to the fall of humanity and the rise of Caesar's civilization.
