BEST BETS
ASTRO CITY: THROUGH OPEN DOORS (TPB, $16.99, DC Comics), ASTRO CITY: VICTORY (HC, $24.99, DC Comics): Astro City is veteran comics writer Kurt Busiek's vehicle for telling the superhero stories that, for whatever reason, he couldn't tell elsewhere, using variations of existing characters and archetypes. And it's really good stuff. These two collections offer the entire run of the latest series, two stories well worth reading.
AVENGERS #35 ($4.99, Marvel Comics): Marvel, which has never rebooted its superhero universe, keeps hinting that it's about to do so, and with this issue, the Marvel Universe will jump ahead seven months into May 2015. Things will obviously not be coming up roses in the future, or why bother to do it? It's likely that our heroes will spend the next seven months trying to prevent that future, but Marvel isn't saying -- aside from the above hints, which I don't believe. Either way, it should be a good ride, and maybe even an "important" story. And it launches big, with this 40-pager.
BLUE ESTATE: THE GRAPHIC NOVEL (HC, $29.99, Image Comics): Crime noir which I've never read, but heard good things about.
EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #2 (Of 5, $3.99, Marvel Comics): Each issue of this miniseries introduces (or re-introduces) a Spider-Man from a different parallel universe, most of whom will be players in the upcoming "Spider-Verse" event. This one has fans talking, in that its premise is that the radioactive spider in Amazing Fantasy #15 bypassed Peter Parker -- and bit Gwen Stacy instead! That one change in the origin story sets older fans' heads spinning, not only in that it gives us a breathing Gwen Stacy, but in that the Spider-history we know must be turned on its head in that world.
ODDLY NORMAL #1 ($2.99, Image Comics): An all ages story about an odd kid in an odd world, Oddly Normal is going for a Disney vibe and might be charming.
PURGATORI #1 ($3.99, Dynamite Comics): Another Chaos Comics character leaps to her own title, now that the ouevre of that defunct company is in Dynamite's hands. Purgatori is a sort of super-vampire, one with a touch of angelic blood, and one with her own agenda that doesn't include kowtowing to the existing supernatural power structure.
TRANSFORMERS: PHASE ONE OMNIBUS ($29.99, IDW Publications): If you enjoy IDW's Transformers books but came in late -- or just enjoyed the movies -- here's a chance to catch up. This Omnibus collects every IDW Transformers story from the first few years the publisher had the franchise.

I was never a huge Conan fan after Barry Windsor-Smith left the title, but read all of Marvel's Conan titles anyway, even after I noticed a severe drop in quality after Roy Thomas left. And yet, these books evoke an alarming level of nostalgia in me. I don't usually remember the stories, but I often remember the time and place I first read them!
I have no idea why this is, it just is.

I read this at a sitting, and it was technically very good, but one thing struck me: Kal and Diana don't ever seem to have any fun. They talk a lot -- a LOT -- about how to make this relationship work, but they never seem to take time to enjoy the relationship. Where's the giggling and silliness part? Where's the I-can't-keep-my-hands-off-you part? For heaven's sake, where's the laughter? I can't see a future for this relationship, because everybody's so darn serious that nobody's having any fun!

Joining Anshargal in VOLUME ONE: BOATMAN’S CALL, as he chases a rumor of the mysterious “Amphibian” who may be the key to living on land as well as in the ocean, is Ukinuu Alal, a young man from a wealthy family who chose to abandon a life a privilege for one of freedom.
For writer Orlando, the tension between the two men’s relationship with their homeland is the heart of the story. “Both have so much anger, but how do they react to it?” he said in an interview at Broken Frontier. “For Anshargal, it is detachment. He hates Atlantis, but simply wants to live away from it. Living well is the best revenge, that is. For Ukinnu, though, his is a younger anger, more petulant, and he wants to hurt Atlantis -- to get back at it, for grinding him through its social soul-crushing machine.”
Orlando’s partnership with Russian artist Trakhanov arises from a shared love of pulp and science fiction -- and, of course, comics. Trakhanov makes use of scratchy inks, vivid, clashing colors, and underwater visuals that can be murky but never muddled to create the world of UNDERTOW.
“Artyom’s influence is huge; much of the visuals and tone come from him,” said Orlando. “My design notes are almost always emotional rather than visual, noting how the creations should make other characters in the story or readers feel, the thoughts they should evoke, and then Artyom runs that through his artistic powers and creates something amazing.”

I'm not usually in favor of distaff spin-offs, but this is a great idea! As someone on this site has pointed out, what Gwen Stacy is most famous for is dying. This will give us a different framing of the character, and also might -- if we're lucky -- make us forget "Sins Past"!

Zearth's battles follow an ironclad rule. If Zearth loses the battle, or if 48 hours pass without victory, Earth will be destroyed, along with humankind and every other living thing on the planet.
Rule 2
Zearth's opponents are Earthlings of a parallel world. Victory is achieved by killing the enemy pilot. If Zearth's pilot is killed, Zearth loses the battle.
Rule 3
Pilots are contracted in advance. One pilot is selected for each battle. Only the selected pilot commands Zearth. The pilot cannot transfer control.
Rule 4
If the pilot dies of natural causes or is killed by a fellow Earthling, another contracted pilot will be chosen to assume command.
Rule 5
After the battle's end, the deceased pilot's body is sent home. However, at the pilot's request, the body may be stored within Zearth, or made to simply vanish.
