Dark Horse Manga presents this final volume by Miura-sensei in English for the first time in trade paperback with a two-sided color poster insert.

SALAMANDRE TP

Story/Art: I.N.J. Culbard | $24.99

Berger Books and Dark Horse Comics are proud to present Salamandre: a uniquely evocative graphic novel about family, loss and the freedom of art from award-winning writer and artist I.N.J. Culbard (Everything, Tales from the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death).

Kaspar Salamandre is a bereaved young artist who is sent to stay with his enigmatic grandfather who lives behind the Iron Veil — a land lorded over by an oppressive emperor. In this foreign place where flowers are contraband, music is illegal and art is created in hiding, Kaspar seeks to heal his grief — discovering a world of art revolutionaries, espionage and the Secret Police — who are not what they seem.

Ultimately his search for answers brings him face to face with the meaning of sacrifice. But will anything bring him closer to overcoming his loss?

“Writing what you know is really about writing what you think you know,” said I.N.J. Culbard. “Instead of what really happened, a confabulation grows with each retelling — a story, transforming a factual truth into a universal one. I took an event from one hot summer afternoon in my own life, made it the finale and then worked backwards through my story, using the jigsaw puzzle of my own memories growing up on both sides of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War as a foundation for this world — that is a little off-kilter to our own.”

“I was blown away when I first heard I.N.J.’s thrilling graphic novel idea inspired by his unusual travels as a child,” said Karen Berger. “It has a real European comics feel — kind of like an off-beat Tintin, panoramic vistas mired by underlying political danger, sparked with dashes of wonder and the fantastic. Ultimately, it’s about perseverance of love, and the power that memory and stories have over us. It’s I.N.J. Culbard’s immense storytelling talent as never seen before and I’m so excited to be sharing it with the world.”

LORD OF THE JUNGLE #1

Story: Dan Jurgens | Art: Benito Gallego | Cover: Dan Panosian

At long last, the Lord of the Jungle returns to comics! One of the most famous and recognizable characters in the history of fiction is back, starting with an adventure that returns us to the days before his birth, as well as a time later in life, when a past wrong must be made right, no matter what manner of beast or obstacle stands in Tarzan's way. From acclaimed writer Dan Jurgens (Superman, Spider-Man, Thor, Booster Gold, Justice League and so many more) comes a tale that wraps the familiar with something brand new. With epic art by Tarzan newspaper artist Benito Gallego, this is sure to be a book that delivers for Tarzan fans both old and new!

  • Is this a period piece? If not, Jurgens is going to have to work a bit to make me accept a white jungle character in the modern world. I'm not sure I can accept one.
  • I appreciate the Kubert and Buscema covers, although I'm not sure how they accomplished the painted look. Had  to roll my eyes at the Amazing Fantasy #15 homage.

DEATH OF SUPERMAN 30TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL ONE-SHOT

Story/Art: Various | Cover: Dan Jurgens & Brett Breeding | Variants: Ivan Reis & Danny Miki, Francesco Mattina, Jim Lee & Scott Williams Dan Mora, Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding | 80 pages | $10.99

30 years ago, the unthinkable happened. The Man of Steel died fighting Doomsday.

To celebrate the special anniversary of this genre-defining moment, DC has reunited the original creative teams of Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding; Roger Stern and Butch Guice; Louise Simonson and Jon Bogdanove; and Jerry Ordway and Tom Grummett for The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1. Available at comic shops on November 8, The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 features four all-new stories that explore the lasting impact that Clark’s death had on his family and friends as well as nine pin-ups and variant covers by some of the top names in comics.

Each of the original creative teams from The Death of Superman has reunited to tell a story that shows how some of Superman’s biggest allies reacted during and after his fateful battle with Doomsday:

  • “The Life of Superman” by Dan Jurgens (W & A), Brett Breeding (A), Brad Anderson (C), and John Workman (L): A young Jon Kent finds out in school that his dad had died years earlier, as his parents never told him about that fateful day. In the midst of dealing with this emotional news, Jon and Clark need to team up to fight a new villain connected to Doomsday called DOOMBREAKER.
  • “Standing Guard” by Roger Stern (W), Butch Guice (A), Glenn Whitmore (C), and Rob Leigh (L): The epic battle between Superman and Doomsday from the Guardians’ perspective.
  • “Time” by Louise Simonson (W), Jon Bogdanove (A), Glenn Whitmore (C), and Rob Leigh (L): The story of how the death of Superman looked from John Henry Irons’ perspective.
  • “Above and Beyond” by Jerry Ordway (W), Tom Grummett (P), Doug Hazelwood (I), Glenn Whitmore (C), and Rob Leigh (L): A powerful story of Ma and Pa Kent watching their son fight Doomsday live on television and going through Clark’s photo albums with the feeling that their son always prevails.

Writer and artist Dan Jurgens provided the below statement on the legacy of The Death of Superman and the upcoming release of The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1:

"Even now, 30 years after the 'Death of Superman' first came out, every single convention or store appearance I do has at least one person who comes up to me with Superman #75 or the first 'Death of Superman' collected edition and says, 'This is the book that got me into comics. And I’m still here, reading, all these years later,' ” Jurgens said. "Most times, it’s more than one. Sometimes, multiple people arrive at my table at the same time and share their memories, which is always fun to experience.

"Their tales are often quite similar. Typically, media coverage of Superman’s death compelled them or a parent to drop by a local store to pick [the issue] up. In some cases, their parents let them skip school the day of the book's release so they could stand in line to get a copy. Some talk of how their store was sold out and they spent days looking all over town to find one.

"I’m not alone in that experience. It’s common for the entire team of writers and artists who worked on Superman at the time. It was a singularly unique moment in comics, when a particular story was covered by every form of national and local media alike.

"It’s hard to tell people what those days were like, but every comic shop in the country had long lines of people outside the door waiting to buy THAT BOOK.

"All these years later, it’s a great pleasure to get back together with the story’s original creative teams to celebrate a truly exciting time in comics. For those of you who remember those days, The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special will reignite some memories. For those who weren’t around to experience it, well … we hope you get a hint of what it was like.

"Most of all, we hope all of you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it all together."

The Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 includes 9 pin-ups from some of the top names in comics today, including Jamal Campbell, Lee Weeks, Clay Mann, Fabio Moon, Walter Simonson, Bill Sienkiewicz, Gabriel Rodriguez and more.

  • I remember not being impressed with this at the time. Of course, I was in my know-it-all 30s and saw nothing but flaws. Arrogant, yes, but I still argue that Superman getting killed by being punched really hard is absurd. Superman's not just the Hulk; he's got lots of other powers he could have used besides Super-punching. He could have fried Doomsday from orbit with his heat vision, or grabbed his foot at super-speed and thrown him into the sun, or frozen him with super-breath and abandoned him on Uranus, etc. Or he could worked in tandem with the remaining Justice League — you know, like a team — to get Doomsday off planet. Superman and Green Lantern working together, just the two of them, are pretty unbeatable for a villain who can't fly and whose only power is hitting really hard. (And GL could call in the cavalry if necessary.) But no, Superman let himself get pummeled to death like a punch-drunk boxer.
  • And, of course, I was prejudiced in advance in that I was far too old and jaded to see this as anything but a gimmick. Which it was. I remember going to the office and people asking me if Superman was really going to be killed off. (My answer was always an irritated "no.")
  • Obviously, for some people, it's a cherished memory. If so, more power to you.

THE NEW GOLDEN AGE #1 ONE-SHOT

Story: Geoff Johns | Art: Steve Lieber, Jerry Ordway, Diego Olortegui | Cover: Mikel Janin | Variants: Gary Frank, Todd Nauck, Michael Allred, David Talaski, Dan Hipp | $4.99 | 48 pages | Variant $5.99 (card stock)

From the 1940s to the 3040s, great heroes across the DC timeline take on the great evils of their era. But in the aftermath of Flashpoint Beyond, those heroes and villains will have their lives turned upside down, from the past to the far future. The New Golden Age one-shot from Geoff Johns lands at comic book shops on Nov. 8 and will unlock DC’s epic and secret-ridden history of heroism, launching a new group of titles with JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA and STARGIRL: THE LOST CHILDREN.

“I’m happy to be writing these two titles, each one of them focused on celebrating and expanding the history (and far future) of heroism in the DC Universe, exploring unseen heroes, villains and adventures alongside the ones we all know and love,” said Geoff Johns. “Our goal is to delve into the neglected corners of DC with this new group of titles, from the JSA to the Legion, and all those who operate between. It’s the story of where superheroes came from, where they’re going and why they’re always needed.”

DC’s future ... and its past ... will never be the same again. But how are Mime and Marionette connected to this? Why are Rip Hunter and the Time Masters the most unlikable heroes in the DC Universe? And who or what is ... Nostalgia? Don’t miss the start of the strangest mystery to have ever plagued the DC Universe.

  • I'm excited about the return of the JSA, for which I have an irrational fondness (due to reading Justice League of America #21-22 at a tender age). But the concept here is that Rip Hunter is returning 13 "new" Golden Age characters that we've never heard of, because they'd been removed from the timeline. What th-?! Why? Honestly, they haven't exhausted the possibilities of the roughly 400 bajillion characters they've already got, not just from 1940s Detective Comics Inc., National Comics Inc. and All-American Comics Inc., but Quality, Fawcett, Charlton and Tower. Why invent a Golden Age Red Lantern (I find the rainbow Lanterns a bit boring, honestly) when you haven't explored Neon the Unknown, Ghost Patrol or the Golden Age Blue Beetle? Why not show us a 1940s predecessor to T.H.U.N.D.E.R.?

The team must work together in the shadows of the DC Universe to make the world a better place but they quickly come across one of their biggest threats, The Court of Owls!

"WildC.A.T.S. has always been a mix of everything I love in comics,” said Writer Matthew Rosenberg. “From the very first issue it exploded off the pages with the coolest characters, the most gorgeous art, the craziest ideas, and it was never afraid to be subversive, go harder, and push things further than its contemporaries. Now we're smashing all of that good stuff full speed into the heart of the DC Universe. I'd say we're going to be respectful and try not to break things...but that would be a lie."

F.A.R.M. SYSTEM GN

Story/Art: Rich Koslowski | $19.99

In the Farm System, having an incredible and unique power is only the first step. Guided by an army of agents, managers and experts, recruits must undergo rigorous psychological evaluations, harassment and sensitivity seminars, marketing, endorsement workshops and costume design meetings, all to boost their chances of recruitment into an A-list superhero team.

Some recruits make “the Bigs.” Some have fleeting moments of glory, then lose it all. Some take “Blue Cowl” gigs as superpowered bodyguards for famous actors or powerful CEOs. Some flounder in the System for years, never getting “the call”. And some find success by joining teams of a ... less reputable ilk.

Following the profound pop-culture satire of Three Fingers, The King and BB Wolf and The Three LPs, award-winning graphic novelist Rich Koslowski examines the hopes, disappointments, perseverance and triumphs of the super-gifted ... and the sometimes drastic lengths they will go to achieve fortune and fame.

FEVER IN URBICANDE GN

Story: Benoit Peeters | Art: Francois Schuiten | $19.99

Eugen Robick, Urbatect of Urbicande has been designing a new bridge to connect the southern portion of the city to the north, but his bid to commence construction has been denied by the Commission. While contemplating how he can convince the Commission to see things his way, Eugen is brought a cube made of beams discovered during construction of another project. Initially small enough to fit on his desk, it begins to grow, adding beam after beam, until it soon takes over his entire office. Growing exponentially, it eventually takes over the entire city, disrupting the social order as citizens begin using the beams to travel back and forth between the southern and northern parts of the city, previously only accessible via the guarded bridges. While the Commission wishes to put a stop to any such social change, the cube's impact is overpowering and irreversible.

GODZILLA: MONSTERS & PROTECTORS — ALL HAIL THE KING #2

MY LITTLE PONIES: CLASSICS REIMAGINED LITTLE FILLIES #1

To commemorate ten years of publishing My Little Pony comic books based on the ever-popular Friendship is Magic franchise, IDW announces the October debut of My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined — Little Fillies, a four-issue miniseries that serves as the first in a series of My Little Pony adaptations of cherished literary classics.

My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined — Little Fillies, written by Megan Brown, illustrated by Jenna Ayoub and colored by Heather Breckel, is a new series about love, life, and sisterhood. Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, and Rarity take on the roles of the March sisters, dreaming of life beyond Broncord, Massahoofetts. Rainbow Dash in particular yearns for excitement—something to write about. So when Applejack, the Marches’ neighbor, arrives home with tales of eel-wrangling and apple-eating, Rainbow Dash and her sisters dare to hope for more.

“I’m really honored to be able to adapt one of the most timeless pieces of American literature for the wonderfully vibrant world of My Little Pony,” says Brown. “Every time that I consume the story of Little Women, I find something new that really speaks to me on my own journey, and tackling that timeless appeal with amazing characters—like Rainbow Dash, a.k.a Jo — has been such a joy. I hope that returning readers find a little something that speaks to them, and that new readers are introduced to the classic story of some very remarkable women…or fillies, as the case may be,” says Megan Brown.

“Working with Megan's script has been a delight. And I'm all about drawing ponies in hoop skirts!” says Ayoub.

Little Fillies kicks off our first series in the Classics Reimagined line. It’s a hilarious, heart-warming, meta, pony-fied take on Louisa May Alcott’s novel. The ponies fit surprisingly well into the roles of the titular women — Rarity is such an Amy — and the creative team has done an amazing job translating the novel into a comic series that My Little Pony and literature fans alike will love,” says editor Riley Farmer.

GOSPEL #1 (OF 5)

Story/Art: Will Morris | Cover: Ver | $3.99

When opportunity refuses to knock for restless hero Matilde, the devil comes knocking instead. Thrust into action by the hellish arrival, Matilde and storyteller Pitt will quest for answers — answers that threaten to tear them apart and trigger the toughest question of all: “Who am I?”

Inspired by the work of Hayao Miyazaki and set in the chaos of King Henry VIII’s reign, this new series will question the truth behind the stories we tell.

"Gospel's story emerged on long road trips to Cornwall (long by British standards anyway). It's a place where magic still hangs in the air and ancient stories and folklore fill the book racks in roadside stores. Who were these stories for? What master did they serve? These questions whirled in my head as I started to write Matilde and Pitt's quest for identity, renown and the soul of their community," said Morris in an exclusive on the announcement with ScreenRant. "This comic is for those that enjoy action, adventure, devils, giants, assassins and friends that stumble, fall and rise again. It's a comic for anyone that has ever felt they had something to live up to."

Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics, added: “Will Morris is an exciting new talent, and we’re thrilled that he chose Image as the home for what is shaping up to be a delightfully different kind of fantasy series.”

“I’m excited, not only to release my first work of dark fantasy, but also to create it, drawing on paper again. These are my first non-digital comic-book drawings since The Sword," said Luna. "Also, I will be using just graphite — not ink. Of all my books, this will look the most different.”

Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics, added: "Working with Jonathan and watching him develop as an artist and a storyteller over the last 20 years has been a real pleasure. And the one-shots he's been releasing over the course of this year have been a lot of fun, but this latest effort took me by surprise  —  just the best kind of progression from his previous work and something that makes me excited to consider what his next full-length project will look like!"

SKYBOUND PRESENTS AFTERSCHOOL #4

Story: Leon Hendrix III | Art: Eric Zawadzki | Colors:  Giovanna Niro | Letters: Pat Brosseau Cover: Veronica Fish | $4.99

Skybound today announced the superstar creative team and story behind Skybound Presents Afterschool #4, the final issue of the teen horror anthology miniseries that goes the extra mile to teach the cautionary tales your parents were too scared to talk about.

In this issue, writer Leon Hendrix III (Two Sentence Horror Stories, Mayor of Kingstown) teams up with artist Eric Zawadzki (Heart Attack, House of El) to present a standalone horror story about an extracurricular you’d die to have on your high school transcript. Afterschool #4's creative team is rounded out by colorist Fabiana Mascolo (Firefly), letterer Pat Brosseau (Birthright, Manifest Destiny), and cover artist Veronica Fish (Archie, Sabrina the Teenage Witch).

Mr. Kelly wanted to shake up the traditions at his private boarding school, so he started a new club. But what happens when a history teacher’s grand experiment in free thinking takes on a life of its own?

"I’ve only worked on horror-adjacent comics in my short career, so I’m pretty excited to finally get a chance to test out my storytelling skills on a pure horror comic,” said Eric Zawadzki.

“Working with Eric, Jon Moisan, and the legendary creative and editorial team at Skybound has been a dream come true. They’re so supportive and curious,” said Leon Hendrix III. “They’ve held my hand as I’ve made the transition from writing for film and TV, and together I think we’ve created a fun, twisted little fable that hopefully helps shine a light on the value of being honest and true to yourself. I’m so excited for people to read it!”

SOLDIER STORIES ONE-SHOT

Story: Rev. William J. Bellamy, Jalysa Conway, Brian Anthony, Megan Ferrell Burke | Cecilia La Valvo, Annapaola Martello, Jonathan Bivens, Arturo Lauria | Covers: Billy Tucci, Marc Silvestri | $5.99

Top Cow gives veterans a voice through sequential storytelling in the upcoming Soldier Stories. This anthology is set to release the week of Veterans Day, in honor of veterans, and will include the contributions of creators, Brian Anthony (USA), Jalysa Conway (UAF), Megan Ferrell Burke (USMC), and Rev. William J. Bellamy (ARNG).

Soldier Stories features four compelling tales of military conflict, all written by veterans who served from the Vietnam era to Afghanistan. These first-person accounts of real-life warfare have been reimagined across a variety of genres from sci-fi to horror to personal memoir. What's it like to wait out a chemical attack? How does it feel to abandon your allies? In a world of push-button warfare, has killing gotten too easy? How do you go on when the war is over but the struggle is not? These are personal stories, compelling stories, stories that will haunt and surprise you. Because every soldier has a story.

  • "Terps" by Brian Anthony & John Bivens
  • "Game Over" by Jalysa Conway, Annapaola Martello, & K. Michael Russell
  • "All Clear" by Megan Ferrell Burke, Arturo Lauria, & Kelly Fitzpatrick
  • "The Great Man" by Rev. William J. Bellamy, Cecilia Lo Valvo, & Ryan Cody

“When Ken Pisani first approached us with this idea of putting out an anthology of stories written by returning veterans, we jumped at the opportunity to do it,” said Matt Hawkins (Tithe, Postal), President at Top Cow Productions.

Ken Pisani (AMP’D), who is a Los Angeles Times bestselling author integral in organizing and making this anthology possible, added: “As a longtime member of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) West, it’s always been important to me to help newer and under-represented voices tell their stories. Working with military veterans provided me with yet another opportunity to do so, and I was lucky to find these talented veterans with stories to tell — turning their experiences into entertaining genre tales that both entertain and enlighten. We’re all grateful to have found an immediate, willing partner in Top Cow.”

These stories will allow readers to step briefly into the boots of men and women who bravely served, to witness heightened versions of the sacrifices that they made during their time in the military.

“We salute their bravery and thank them for their service. Support veterans and pick up this book and share their stories,” added Hawkins.

  • I'm all for this concept, and wouldn't mind seeing it continue beyond this one-shot. My favorite war artist is the late John Severin, but barring him, I wouldn't mind seeing some Billy Tucci on one of these stories.

TWO GRAVES #1

Story: Genevieve Valentine | Art/Variant:  Ming Doyle | Art/Cover: Annie Wu | $3.99

Image Comics is pleased to present a unique new series from writer Genevieve Valentine (Catwoman), illustrated in competing points of view by Annie Wu (Hawkeye, Black Canary) and Ming Doyle (The Banks, DC Comics: Anatomy of a Metahuman) in the forthcoming series Two Graves. This contemporary Persephone myth retelling is set to launch in November.

"This undead road trip, through vanishing forests and motels in towns that never were, is an absolute blast to write," said Valentine. "Having dual points of view for Death and Emilia was the initial spark behind the book, and I'm so thrilled that Ming and Annie — my dream artists for this — are sharing the wheel with me to shape this story."

Emilia and the man with the veil of smoke have set out for the ocean in a stolen truck. There’s a bloody handprint on his neck. She’s beginning to worry it's hers.

Death and the Maiden go on a road trip. Nobody makes it home alive.

Wu added: "Genevieve and Ming have been doing stunning, thoughtful work, and I've pushed myself out of my comfort zone to meet them at their level. I can't wait for readers to see what we've been putting together. Fans of the strange and darkly beautiful, get in here."

"Working on Two Graves with this team has been inspiring, renewing, and almost meditative at times," said Doyle. "In the past few years I've become more acquainted with death than ever before, as we all must if we live long enough. It has been incredibly rewarding, continuing to create around it with such talented company."

  • The Persephone myth is really having a moment these days.

A.X.E.: JUDGMENT DAY OMEGA will be naturally written by event architect Kieron Gillen and his collaborator on the upcoming A.X.E.: DEATH TO THE MUTANTS limited series, artist Guiu Vilanova.

“Up front, I've black-hatted the Eternals,” Gillen told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “Not all Eternals are bad guys here, but mainstream Eternal society are the aggressors, and for very ‘understandable reasons.’ That's the first act, basically: The Eternals go to war, and then we build up from there. But the Eternals are a complicated group of people. Especially since I'm writing both the ETERNALS tie-ins and IMMORTAL X-MEN, I'm always writing the complexities."

  • I think this is really, really, really the end of this event.

BLACK PANTHER BY JOHN RIDLEY VOL 2: RANGE WARS TP

BLACK PANTHER: UNCONQUERED #1 ONE-SHOT

Story: Bryan Edward Hill | Art: Duarte, Alberto Foche | Cover: Ken Lashley | Teen+ | $3.99

This fall, all eyes will be on Wakanda! In addition to John Ridley and Germán Peralta’s current run on Black Panther and the upcoming Wakanda limited series, Marvel Comics will also publish a special one-shot in November, BLACK PANTHER: UNCONQUERED #1! Written by Bryan Edward Hill and drawn by Alberto Foche (Miles Morales: Spider-Man), BLACK PANTHER: UNCONQUERED will be an ideal entry point into the world of Black Panther, perfect for longtime fans and newcomers to the Black Panther mythology

The scribe behind 2019’s acclaimed Killmonger limited series, Hill returns to Wakanda to explore the land’s rich mythology once again with a thought-provoking story that will see the emergence of a threat deeply rooted in Wakandan history. In order to combat it, Black Panther will have to learn new secrets about Wakanda’s ancient past and unlock a new connection to the Panther god, Bast.

"Black Panther and Wakanda mean so much to people. It's an honor to contribute my imagination to the legacy of this character,” Hill said. “I'm very grateful that I can only do comic projects that mean something to me personally, and returning to Marvel for this certainly does. Hopefully it speaks to longtime fans of the character while also onboarding new readers into his world. Shall I say it? Why not. Wakanda Forever! You'll just have to imagine me crossing my arms, LOL!"

FANTASTIC FOUR #1

Story: Ryan North | Art: Iban Coello | Cover: Alex Ross | Variants: Alex Ross, J. Scott Campbell | Teen+ | $4.99

The next incredible adventures of Marvel’s first family are upon us! This November, writer Ryan North and artist Iban Coello launch an all-new run of FANTASTIC FOUR where they’ll take this beloved team of superhero icons to exciting new places throughout the Marvel Universe and beyond! Packed with the grand, high-concept sci-fi storytelling that only the Fantastic Four can deliver, this bold new era will kick off with the team spread across the country after a devastating event takes place back in New York. North and Coello will craft separate adventures spotlighting each member of the team before bringing in the band back together in epic fashion at the end of the book’s first arc! The debut issue will star Ben Grimm and Alicia Masters as they embark on a road trip that takes a very weird turn…

Something terrible has happened to the Fantastic Four and the Thing and Alicia are traveling across America to leave it behind! But when they stop in a small town for the night and wake up the morning before they arrived, they find themselves caught in a time loop that's been going on since before they were born ... that's been going on since before they were born ... that's been going on since before they were born ...

"I want to do these smaller, self-contained stories in the vein of '60s Star Trek where they go down to a planet, find a weird thing, fix the weird thing, and move on,” North said of his approach in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Having these four weirdos roll into town where there's a mystery or a problem or some sci-fi thing, solve the problem, and then move on struck me as a very interesting way to position the Fantastic Four and tell stories that would feel fresh and not like a retread of what we've seen before."

Check out new variant covers by Alex Ross for the first four issues of Ryan North and Iban Coello’s FANTASIC FOUR!

  • Is it me, or is there something strange about the Ross Sue Richards cover below? I can't tell you what it is, but the anatomy seems off to me.
  • And I always think the Thing looks strange when he's off-model. Kirby didn't draw him with defined muscles, so he shouldn't have them. And if there's no Kirby brow ridge, it ain't the Thing.
  • Reed and Johnny are very true to their '60s depiction, though.

KILLCHELLA #1

Story: Mario Candelaria | Art/Cover: Serg Acuna | Scout Comics | $4.99

A group of friends drive from Los Angeles to attend an ultra-trendy music festival in the Coachella Valley desert. They soon face a bloody night of terror when a reclusive pop star making her big return after years in hiding recruits her most fanatical devotees to assist in a massive human sacrifice ritual.

"The idea of Killchella was born in the desert, just outside of Los Angeles," Mario Canelaria said. "There's something primal out in that terrain that washed over me at a time when creatively I was at my lowest point. I thought on the people who come out there for spiritual healing, and the people who left big city life behind to live in the shadow of Mount San Jacinto. There's a lot of positivity to be found out there, but what if all those good vibes flipped the wrong switch in someone? What if someone like an influential celebrity got the message wrong, and then used their following of rabid fans to spread a twisted message of love and warmth onto an unsuspecting crowd?"

  • I'm surprised more festivals don't turn into Midsommar or The Wicker Man or, I dunno, Jamestown.

KNOCKTURN COUNTY #1

Story: James E Roche | Art: Axur Eneas | Scout Comics | Mature | $4.99

Knockturn County is an adult crime noir set in a classic children’s book universe. Various tales converge and collide in this county built on crime, as a rhyming narrative leads readers through a tangled web of death, booze, drugs and betrayal. Good doesn't always win, bad doesn't always pay and, in true noir fashion, people always die.

This debut issue follows an obsessed detective who puts his badge aside to hunt for his missing ex, and a little girl in the scariest place of all: her home.

A gritty crime noir with rhyming narrative — It's as if Dr. Seuss took a few swigs of whimsical whiskey and ran amok through Sin City.

"The entire creative team has been together on Knockturn County since its inception in 2018,” said writer James E. Roche. “It suffered several hiccups along the way, but the team wanted to tell this rhyming, dark, unique crime noir tale, no matter what it took. That includes Scout Comics’ President, James Haick, who had been interested in the idea since New York Comic Con 2018. With him supporting the title for as long as he did, it was a no-brainer that we team up with the folks at Scout, who have pumping out some of the greatest creator owned comics around."

"Everything about Knockturn County was a great fit for me because I LOVE crime novels and movies from the 1940s-‘50s,” said artist Axur Eneas. “I even rewatched John Huston and Hitchcock movies while working on the book. I had also worked as an animator on kid’s shows for Ánima Estudios and Cartoon Network, so the mix of genres in Knockturn County was super interesting and fun for me."

Praise for Knockturn County:

"… A clever and dark comedic spin on classic rhyming storytelling. My face is red, your face will be too, from enjoying Knockturn County — a rhyming comic book breakthrough!" — Heather Antos (Senior Editor IDW)

“With a touch of Seuss and a bump of outright derangement, James E. Roche and Axur Eneas deliver a comic book like none other on shelves with KNOCKTURN COUNTY. Dark and satirical, this comic hypnotizes you into a sense of tense unease with whimsical art and lyrical writing that exposes the most chilling aspects of humanity.” — Pat Shand, Destiny NY, Azza The Barbed

  • I get it. Knockturn = Nocturne = Noir. So, by the distributive principle of mathematics, Knockturn = Noir.

Incredible, kinetically charged artwork blasts the blood, mayhem and quirky humor directly through your brain like a high-caliber bullet. In this issue, it's Elvis night at an interstellar backwater bar, but with all due respect to the King, that doesn't stop Mr. Easta. With the help of Frank, his teleportation parasite, who can also transform into any handheld weapon imaginable, it's business as usual.

Mr. Easta has to repay his debt to Intergalactic Warlord Dr. Bone by scouring the universe for the targets on his hit list. This adults-only romp through time and space sees Easta and Frank soon establish that a sinister coincidence exists between the targets on the list. They are all members of the powerful intergalactic trade union. ‘Offing’ these people would incite a massive trade war and leave the universal market open to Dr. Bone and his ethically questionable products.

Dr. Bone’s products are made using a strange little alien creature, the last of its kind whose body has mind-enhancing properties when ingested. Easta, who turns out to have some morals left, rescues the alien from Dr. Bone and takes it upon himself to protect the creature. This now means the Warlord is after Easta and puts a contract out to kill him and retrieve the alien. Easta is soon being hunted by a host of other assassins. Easta realizes he’s just gonna have to kill Dr. Bone and anyone else who gets in his way...

"Mr. Easta is a weird and hopefully funny book that can be a bit rude in places. I am so happy to be working with Scout on this! Their diverse and quality range of books will be the perfect home for Mr. Easta." — Kit Wallis

TRAGEDIE OF MACBETH #1 (OF 2)

    10862280458?profile=RESIZE_710xStory: William Shakespeare | Art: Stewart K Moore | Clover Press | $5.99

Shakespeare died over 400 and no story captures the mysticism and brutality of Scottish history quite like 'Macbeth'. This graphic novel aims to tell the darkest version yet of this tale of witchcraft, murder, manipulation and unbridled ambition...

When we first meet Macbeth he is a hero, he has fought valiantly for his country and saved Scotland from invasion by land and sea. But a mysterious encounter with three witches, who claim to see his future on the throne, spurs his interest in being king. This sets in motion a spiral of evil as Macbeth pushes destiny and descends ever deeper into the abyss.

Basing his drawings on Prague Shakespeare Company's adaptation of Shakespeare's masterpiece Scottish artist Stewart Kenneth Moore has 'done double' by documenting a stage performance in Prague by illustrating it against the starkest memories, places and myths of his homeland.

Based on an adapted version of the play, the pacing of the panels and scene setting serves to clarify aspects of the play that can be hard to understand on the stage.

Shakespeare loosely based Macbeth on actual events. The witchcraft in this story is almost certainly based on 'Newes from Scotland' a London pamphlet on the Berwick Witch trials. Extracts from this pamphlet are included in this book for comparison. It is the opinion of the artist that 'Newes from Scotland' and Macbeth, to a degree, share the same political subtext, only in Shakepeare's case it comes with a dose of subtle irony.

One day, as Stavros wanders the city under a heavy rain, voices become insistent, revealing his deepest, unspeakable secrets, as well as his dreams and memories. He is tormented by these mysterious voices, perhaps a sign of his madness. Or perhaps of a wider, collective madness, which infects everyone around him, to the point of being transmitted to the entire universe.
A dramatic graphic novel full of black humor, spectacular and disturbing, written with visionary power and extraordinary narrative impetus by an absolute master of comics, Tiziano Sclavi, the creator of Dylan Dog. And illustrated by one of the most important Italian comics artists of the last decade, Werther Dell'Edera, co-creator of the bestselling Something Is Killing The Children.

  • "Do I get [ABSOLUTE DARK KNIGHTS METAL HC], Legionnaires, or hope for an omnibus with related series?"

For me the answer is "neither."

"DEATH OF SUPERMAN 30TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL ONE-SHOT"

I remember a two-panel cartoon published in CBG at the time. The first panel was the general publics' reaction ("Oh, no!" "How could they!" "This is terrible!") and the second panel was the fans' ("Ho hum." "Big deal." "Meh.").

"I'm excited about the return of the JSA... but... What th-?! Why?"

"Now, now, Mr. Scott. Young minds, fresh ideas."

"The "C.A.T.s" part of the title is no longer "Covert Action Team," but is instead "Crisis Aversion Tactical Squad."

At least it's not ""Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate." Actually, a quick Google search informs me that it it's not even that anymore. Now it's apparently "Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division." What th-?! Why?

F.A.R.M. SYSTEM GN: Hey, this is by Rich Koslowski (of How to Pick Up Girls if You're a Comic Book Geek, Three Fingers and The King). I've met him (and I won a piece of his artwork in a contest). I might check this out.

INVADERS OMNIBUS HC - This was originally solicited for February 23, 2022 release.

"I'm not a fan of the art of Frank Robbins"

When I was a kid I hated it, but (like Mike Sekowsky's and Gene Colan's) it has grown on my overt the years. The last time I read through Invaders I found the Robbins issues dynamic and distinctive, and the post-Robbins issues mostly bland. If you're considering buying this just for reference, I'm about to have four Invaders Classic tpbs duplicated. Let me know if you're interested; I'm sure we could arrange some sort of a trade.

BERNIE WRIGHTSON: THE FPG YEARS HC - I wasn't going to, but Tracy insisted I pre-order this one.

  • And FPG YEARS refers to what?

  • FPG is a publisher of Science Fiction and Fantasy products. The HC features art he did for a trading card series.

    10861403878?profile=RESIZE_710xStory: David M. Booher | Chris Shehan | Cover: Skylar Patridge | Boom Entertainment | $3.99

In this mysterious new series from writer David M. Booher (Canto, All-New Firefly) and artist Chris Shehan (House of Slaughter), what happens when a couple of misfit teens mail-order a pair of X-ray glasses, and realize they've received much more than they bargained for?

But all Kenny and Ted want is to not feel like outcasts in their small Ohio town. Their world is turned upside down when the Magic Specs they receive unlock a world of possibilities.

Their wishes start out innocent enough, but when they wish that their bully would disappear ... things take a cursed turn, with far darker consequences than they thought possible.

  • There are so many iterations of "S.H.I.E.L.D." that I can only remember a couple of them at a time, when I bother to remember it at all.

As Grant Ward said on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "It sounds like someone really wanted it to spell out SHIELD." So the specific words don't really matter.
