I’d like to start this continuation of the Dark Shadows discussion from the old board with a look at some of the new and upcoming Dark Shadows audio stories from Big Finish Productions. There aren’t nearly as many Dark Shadows audio adventures as there are Doctor Who ones, but the Doctor Who series has been around longer. The Dark Shadows audios are a mixed bag. The first release was a full-cast sequel titled “Return to Collinwood”. Later they began to release a series of interconnected sequential stories grouped in short “seasons”. More recently they’ve been going back to the timeline of the original television show and telling interstitial one-shots. As the Dark Shadows series seems to be catching on, Big Finish seems to be ramping up their production schedule. “Curse of the Pharaoh” was released in September, and the next four are set for monthly release beginning in January at a special subscription rate.

CURSE OF THE PHARAOH:

“Curse of the Pharaoh” stars Nancy Barrett (reprising her role as Carolyn Stoddard) and Marie Wallace (perhaps best known as “Eve” on the TV show) in a new role, famed Egyptologist Dr. Gretchen Warwick. The story doesn’t specify, but I assume it takes place shortly after the end of the series original TV series, circa 1970 or so. Both actresses are kind of rusty and sound as old as they are, not as young as they (Caroline, anyway) are supposed to be. Barrett was always a better actress than Wallace, and that remains true. Wallace’s shortcomings are spotlighted in this “dramatic reading” in which she plays other bit parts, most of the male (Bob the bartender at The Blue Whale, Eliot Stokes on the telephone, Carolyn’s father in flashback), which she performs in a gruff kind of storybook voice as if reading aloud to a child. The story itself is a sequel to the unpopular “Leviathan” television storyline. If you’ve never heard a Dark Shadows audio and thinking of trying one out, there are better ones to start with than this.

So its a whompy ear?
Wow, I did not know that, TP! There's no question about it: I've got to track down that Avengers episode!
Dark Shadows: "Barnabas Gets Sucked Into A Painting"

1)OK, who is this "Kitty" that sucks Barnabas into the painting?

2)Who's Ben Stokes?

3)So, Barnabas has crossed his own timeline? Where's the Barnabas who was already there?

4)Who is Angelique? Is she a ghost?

5)What book are they talking about?

6)I always wanted a secret panel.

7)This one was kind of hard to follow.
Dark Shadows: "Barnabas of Two Worlds?"

1)So, Collinwood has a Parallel Time Room?

2)What's with the book?

3)Carolyn Loomis? Wow.

4)Barnabas, you brute!

5)Earth-Two Liz is poor.

6)Who is Quentin? He needs a haircut.

7)"Her name is Maggie Evans."

8)Who was Jeb Hawks?

9)Has Barnabas been to parallel time before?

10)So, Earth-Two Julia is Frau Blucher?

11)So, who is Angelique in this timeline?
Dark Shadows: "Barnabas Gets Sucked Into A Painting" (a.k.a. episode #885)

OK, who is this "Kitty" that sucks Barnabas into the painting?

Briefly, Kitty Soames is the true reincarnation of Barnabas’ lost love Josette du Pres (as opposed to the supposed reincarnation of Barnabas’ lost love, Rachel Drummond, also played by Katheryn Leigh Scott, earlier in the 1897 sequence).

Who's Ben Stokes?

Ben Stokes is Barnabas’ friend and confidant from 1897. Stokes is indentured to Barnabas’ father, Joshua. He knows Barnabas’ secret but is more than a “Renfield” like Willie. The actor who plays him, Thayer David, played the second Matthew in 1966-67. He also played Ben Stokes’ descendant, Professor T.E. (Timothy Elliot) Stokes who, along with Julia Hoffman, completed the “Will, Dr. Smith and the Robot” triumvirate.

So, Barnabas has crossed his own timeline? Where's the Barnabas who was already there?

He travelled into the past psychically, and his 20th century ego took over his own 18th century body.

Who is Angelique? Is she a ghost?

Angelique is the witch responsible for Barnabas’ curse. At this point in 1796 she is presumed dead.

What book are they talking about?

I think you’re referring to the Collins Family History, published in 1964. They were using that book as a focus during the séance which sent Vicki to 1795. The book went with her and was a damning piece of evidence at her trial for being a witch. (More on that later.)

I always wanted a secret panel.

The secret panels go back to the pre-Barnabas days of the show, but this is your first time seeing them. It is also your first time seeing Josette’s music box, a very important prop from the early Barnabas episodes and used frequently thereafter.

This one was kind of hard to follow.

Yeah, I kind of suspected that it would be, but I was looking for episodes with “payoff”... i.e., what I call “transition episodes” in which lots of stuff happens rather than building to a slow boil. Originally I had chosen episode #886 (Barnabas travels from 1796 to 1970), but in this one a lot more stuff happens (Barnabas travels from 1897 to 1796 and then to 1970 at the very end). This episode marks the third version of 1796 we have seen. Keep your questions in mind; all will become more clear later.

I'm particularly curious as to how Carolyn-2 ended up married to Willie-2 - I imagine one or the other or both of them were very different people in this timeline.
Dark Shadows: "Barnabas of Two Worlds?" (a.k.a. #981)

So, Collinwood has a Parallel Time Room?

Of course! All 18th century mansions had one. Why, after a drawing room and secret passages, a Parallel Time room is the third most popular feature.

What's with the book?

Book? I think the book you’re referring to is one written by William Loomis.

Carolyn Loomis? Wow. I'm particularly curious as to how Carolyn-2 ended up married to Willie-2 - I imagine one or the other or both of them were very different people in this timeline.

Well, “William” is an author in this reality who chains Barnabas in his coffin and pumps him for book ideas. In this respect it’s more like Earth-3 than Earth-2.

Who is Quentin?

Quentin is probably Dark Shadows second most popular character after Barnabas. He started out as a ghost in the present. Barnabas travelled to 1897 to find out why he was haunting Collinwood in the present day. During that storyline Quentin became, by turns, a zombie (but he “got better”), werewolf, then a kind of immortal Picture of Dorian Gray being and was introduced into the present day storyline. This Parallel Time Quentin is, for all intents and purposes, a new character.

He needs a haircut.

Probably.

Who was Jeb Hawks?

It doesn’t really matter for the purposes of this storyline, but he’s Carolyn’s husband.

Has Barnabas been to parallel time before?

No, but they had been building up to this storyline for several weeks prior by having characters look into the Parallel Time room.

So, who is Angelique in this timeline?

I believe Lara Parker plays Alexis Stokes, Angelique’s identical twin sister.

The Parallel Time story is tied (with the Leviathan one) as being my least favorite. I’ve only watched it one, but Lost’s “imaginary time” has piqued my interest in re-watching it.
Dark Shadows: "Collinwood '95"

1)Who was Roxanne?

2)Grayson Hall sure blinks alot.

3)"1995" - be funny if they ran into Scully and Mulder.

4)David died in 1970?

5)It's Old Mrs. Johnson!

6)"You're not even supposed to mention the name!"

7)"Fredericks...the old shack...Findlay's Cove."
5)It's Old Mrs. Johnson!

Now Old Mrs. Johnson had troubles of her own.
She had a vampire bat
That wouldn't leave her home.
She tried and tried for to give the bat away.
She gave it to a man
Going far, far awaaaaaaayyyyyy .....

But the bat came back
The very next day.
Yeah, the bat came back.
She thought he was a goner
But the bat came back.
He just wouldn't stay
Away, away, away, oh....
Excellent.
