I’d like to start this continuation of the Dark Shadows discussion from the old board with a look at some of the new and upcoming Dark Shadows audio stories from Big Finish Productions. There aren’t nearly as many Dark Shadows audio adventures as there are Doctor Who ones, but the Doctor Who series has been around longer. The Dark Shadows audios are a mixed bag. The first release was a full-cast sequel titled “Return to Collinwood”. Later they began to release a series of interconnected sequential stories grouped in short “seasons”. More recently they’ve been going back to the timeline of the original television show and telling interstitial one-shots. As the Dark Shadows series seems to be catching on, Big Finish seems to be ramping up their production schedule. “Curse of the Pharaoh” was released in September, and the next four are set for monthly release beginning in January at a special subscription rate.

“Curse of the Pharaoh” stars Nancy Barrett (reprising her role as Carolyn Stoddard) and Marie Wallace (perhaps best known as “Eve” on the TV show) in a new role, famed Egyptologist Dr. Gretchen Warwick. The story doesn’t specify, but I assume it takes place shortly after the end of the series original TV series, circa 1970 or so. Both actresses are kind of rusty and sound as old as they are, not as young as they (Caroline, anyway) are supposed to be. Barrett was always a better actress than Wallace, and that remains true. Wallace’s shortcomings are spotlighted in this “dramatic reading” in which she plays other bit parts, most of the male (Bob the bartender at The Blue Whale, Eliot Stokes on the telephone, Carolyn’s father in flashback), which she performs in a gruff kind of storybook voice as if reading aloud to a child. The story itself is a sequel to the unpopular “Leviathan” television storyline. If you’ve never heard a Dark Shadows audio and thinking of trying one out, there are better ones to start with than this.

Those are Julia's legs on Barnabas!

The truth, in those less tolerant times, was that Barnabas was biologically female? Or that (judging from the horse) he wasn't a Collins at all, but a member of the Brady Bunch?

I can't even process that...

(I'll also be out of the running for a few days -- taking a long weekend to go camping! So don't get too far head of me!)

We stopped at 425.

The panel above is the splash page to part two of Gold Key's Dark Shadows #1. The art has been altered. Note that Julia's legs have been flipped and repositioned.

Thanks! I've seen some screw-ups in Gold Key art here and there, but that one seemed too much.

I had a chance to squeeze in episode 423 while I was had a few minutes between jobs. Suki and Nathan plan to meet in the Old House to hammer out the terms on Suki's blackmail, but she runs into Barnabas... and tries blackmailing HIM!

That doesn't work.

At the end of the episode, Nathan rushes in to find her on the floor, after Barnabas attacked her. And with what's probably her dying breath, she names her attacker: "Barnabas... Barnabas Collins."

"That doesn't work."

That's the thing I couldn't tell you last week.

"If I were Nathan, I might consider setting her up on a date with a local dead bachelor."

"I have one other comment to make about your post, but I can't say it yet."

I've reached Friday! Episode 425! And two really significant things have happened.

First, in the Nathan/Millicent plot, Suki is definitely dead, strangled by Barnabas. And in trying to locate an address for Suki's next of kin -- an aunt in Baltimore -- Millicent discovers her marriage certificate to Nathan! She confronts him, and runs off into the night, pursued by a scoundrel.

But in the main event, Natalie is trying to keep Josette in the house, as Vicki's family history book says she'll die tonight. And she's lost the ring Barnabas has given her, so she wants to run to the Old House to look for it. Natalie seems able to pin her down, though, until they struggle and break a lamp... and then the wind throws Josette's bedroom door open wide. Then Natalie goes into the hall, and the door slams shut...and Josette suddenly hears the architect of all this chaos -- the ghost of Angelique, speaking in the voice of Barnabas. She summons her to Widow's Hill, and she leaves through the secret passage.

Meanwhile, Angelique does the same with Barnabas, pretending to be Josette. But Barnabas is onto her, and knows it's a trap. He goes anyway.

Josette get's to Widow's Hill first, and Angelique reveals herself, and shows her a vision of what Barnabas will turn her into: an undead vampire lady! Josette screams. Barnabas arrives and tries to comfort her, but she pulls from his arms and leaps off the hill, onto the rocks below!

And now the family history has been fulfilled. But we've probably got a while to go yet in this century... so what's still on the line?

Well, Vicki's still in jail. We'll probably have a trial for witchcraft.

Will Nathan and Millicent patch things up? Will Nathan face consequences for attempted bigamy?

Will Josette come back as a ghost in this time, or will she wait until the 20th century to start appearing?

More and more people have seen Barnabas, and Joshua knows he's missing from his grave. What'll happen there... and how will he eventually get sealed back into his coffin?

Those are great questions! I know most of the answers but I am excited to see what happens next.

Oh, and one more question: Can anything be done to get revenge on Angelique?

The house used for the Dark Shadows exterior is about to be for sale.
