I’d like to start this continuation of the Dark Shadows discussion from the old board with a look at some of the new and upcoming Dark Shadows audio stories from Big Finish Productions. There aren’t nearly as many Dark Shadows audio adventures as there are Doctor Who ones, but the Doctor Who series has been around longer. The Dark Shadows audios are a mixed bag. The first release was a full-cast sequel titled “Return to Collinwood”. Later they began to release a series of interconnected sequential stories grouped in short “seasons”. More recently they’ve been going back to the timeline of the original television show and telling interstitial one-shots. As the Dark Shadows series seems to be catching on, Big Finish seems to be ramping up their production schedule. “Curse of the Pharaoh” was released in September, and the next four are set for monthly release beginning in January at a special subscription rate.

CURSE OF THE PHARAOH:

“Curse of the Pharaoh” stars Nancy Barrett (reprising her role as Carolyn Stoddard) and Marie Wallace (perhaps best known as “Eve” on the TV show) in a new role, famed Egyptologist Dr. Gretchen Warwick. The story doesn’t specify, but I assume it takes place shortly after the end of the series original TV series, circa 1970 or so. Both actresses are kind of rusty and sound as old as they are, not as young as they (Caroline, anyway) are supposed to be. Barrett was always a better actress than Wallace, and that remains true. Wallace’s shortcomings are spotlighted in this “dramatic reading” in which she plays other bit parts, most of the male (Bob the bartender at The Blue Whale, Eliot Stokes on the telephone, Carolyn’s father in flashback), which she performs in a gruff kind of storybook voice as if reading aloud to a child. The story itself is a sequel to the unpopular “Leviathan” television storyline. If you’ve never heard a Dark Shadows audio and thinking of trying one out, there are better ones to start with than this.

OK, "Bathia Mapes" is definitely a Star Wars character name.

Next episode you'll meet Bathia Mapes.

Close! There was actually a character named Shadout Mapes in Dune.

Ok, I've seen episode 450. (Holy cow, that's a lot.) Joshua discovers Barnabas has bitten Millicent! Barnabas has high-tailed to to town, where he eyes a prostitute who's not being paid to talk! (Literally; she has no lines.) And Joshua works with Mapes to summon Barnabas back to the tower, where Mapes confronts him, and has Angelique speak from inside of him (which is quite an effective performance, with Frid going full evil). And then Barnabas attacks her!

And Tracy, I had the same thought about the tower. No one uses it? You just built it! Why'd you go to the trouble? (Of course, it could have been built for Jeremiah; that way there'd be an excuse for no one else to want to deal with it.)

Saw episode 451 this morning. The big face-off between Bathia Mapes and Angelique...! It looks like Mapes has the upper hand, but then Naomi interrupts the ritual, and suddenly Angelique makes her move...consuming Mapes in fire!

Plus, Millicent says some addled stuff to Nathan and Naomi, but it's always been hard to track her motivations from one minute to the next. She definitely seems like she's lost her mind here... but I'm surprised anyone's noticed.

Highlight: Angelique speaks through Barnabas.

Also: Joshua tells the truth!

That IS pretty unusual!

I posted earlier that I thought Nathan Forbes went though the biggest character change (will discuss more later, at the end of his arc), but I think now it might be Joshua. At least Joshua experienced a change for the better

I haven't had a chance to watch a lot lately, but I did catch episode 452 last night. Joshua tries to free Vicki, but the Judge won't reopen the case. So Peter breaks her out of jail, but Vicki is shot in the process...! And there's a mob gathering outside the jailhouse, which they'll have to evade! (And almost certainly will, since Dark Shadows isn't a show that spends a lot of money of extras.)

Vicki probably could have escaped any time she wanted if she hadn't been wearing that long dress. The cell bars don't even go all the way to the ceiling; there's at least a four foot gap. It's going to be mostly Vicki and Peter for the rest of 1795.

I've seen through episode 455 now. Daniel's in danger -- although at one point Vicki calls him David. (I don't know why you give me grief about getting the names confused, Jeff, when the cast can't even get it right!) Nathan has hatched a plot to kill him, enlisting Noah to kidnap him and take him on a one-way boat ride into the middle of the harbor. Daniel escapes, Nathan berates Noah, and Noah returns to the mausoleum to look for Daniel. Meanwhile, Peter talks to Naomi, who insists that Vicki be brought to Collinwood where she can heal and be protected. But outside the tomb, Noah has grabbed Daniel, then Vicki shoots and kills him! (So long, Noah. You gullible, malleable dope.) Peter arrives to find Noah's body and his gun, abandoned by Vicki. Which is when Nathan gets the jump on Peter, and says he plans to bring him back to jail and charge him with murder.

Still, Nathan's got to be pretty happy about not paying Noah all the money he owes him.

I had forgotten that Vicki was shot and, more importantly, actually killed a man

There is only one more week left in the 1795 arc, five more episodes.

Can we try to get through them before Hallowe'en? (I was going to say Christmas.)

Yep, I plan to get through them in the next week. After that I'll be on vacation, so I'll be completely dark for a week, but I plan to take a break from the original series and watch the 2012 movie and look into the 90s series for a bit.
