The piece in the July 3d NEW YORKER about David Pecker, the head of the company that owns the NATIONAL ENQUIRER and many other mags, provide s me with a topic springboard for some things I've meant to ask here for a while. Time-Warner spun off it's print holdings into Time, Incorporated some years ago. Corporately, DC is part of the Warner Brothers side, not Time Inc....Does Time Inc. internally liscence DC's holdings from Warner's to publish the comic books? Does that extend to the books as well? DC still distributes their comic books to newsstands accounts, unlike Marvel. Does that Books-A-Million chain that's been referenced here or any similar ones still carry comic books? I've never been to one. The Pecker piece mentions that he is thinking of trying to buy Time Inc.'s magazines. If he did, how would this affect DC? That The one newsstand comics account near me is somewhat atypical. I was there recently, and bought SCOOBY-DOO! #s 81 & 82 for $2.99 each. How many kids's line titles is DC publishing now?

I thought Rupert Murdoch owned the National Enquirer. Apparently not.

Even though the DC books are magazines, DC Comics is part of DC Entertainment, which is part of Warner Bros. Entertainment, not Time Incorporated, which has no claim on the comics side.

I've never even heard of them, but as far as I can tell they only have one "brick and mortar" store located in Rapid City, South Dakota. They mainly are online. Offhand, it looks like they sell comics TPBs but not periodicals.

  • Books-A-Million is the second-largest bookstore chain in the U.S., says Wikipedia, likely thanks to the demise of Borders Books and Music and the shrinking of Barnes & Noble. They're in 32 states and in Washington, D.C.

  • I see that their website is unclear on store locations. When It thought I was in Los Angeles Countyt it suggested one in South Dakota. When it thought I was in Phoenix Arizona it suggested a store in Texas. When it thought I was in Chicago it suggested several stores.

  • Well, Books-A-Million is being buffeted by the same forces that caused Borders Books and Music to close and is causing Barnes & Noble to shrink. I expect the total number of Books-A-Million stores has fluctuated over the years.

  • ...A belated thank uou...Aren't you in the L.A. area, if not LA County proper?

  • I live in the northeast portion of the San Gabriel Valley, close to the mountains, in Los Angeles County.
