1)Here we have the introduction of the Doctor's newest companion, Martha Jones, as played by Freema Agyeman.  I quite like Freema, and have nothing against Martha as a character - if I was less than overwhelmed by her, it's because after all the soap opera over Rose, it would've nice to have had a companion who wasn't pining after the Doctor all the time.  We had to wait for that, however. And we get another wacky family - aren't there any orphans in the Whoniverse?

2)We also get the introduction of the Judoon, whom I've always found amusing. Love a good rhino, myself, and they're a nice satire on the bureaucratic mentality - we'll kill you, but only once we've established jurisdiction, that sort of thing.

3)Liked the Plasmavore, too - old ladies make for good villains.

4)Fun quotes:

  • "Have you got a brother?"  "No, not anymore."
  • "Judoon platoon upon the Moon."
  • "Crossing into established events is strictly forbidden - except for cheap tricks."

Overall: A lightweight story, as introductory stories often are, but not bad for it.  I liked the chemistry overall between Tennant and Agyeman.

You have to wait for the post-RTD years for that...and, um, it gets fixed along the way.

  • I LOVED that the Doctor was teamed-up with an MD in training. And, though we won't get there for a few days, Martha Jones wins the "most hard working companion of all time" award. Other companions aren't fit to be mentioned in the same breath as Doctor Jones.

This, all told, may have been my favorite season of Doctor Who.

In "Curse of the Black Spot", if Amy had said to the pirate captain "Have you ever known what it is to be an orphan?", I would still be laughing.
