Ellery Queen Bibliography

Over on The Maze Agency thread the subject of Ellery Queen has arisen since he and his father Inspector Richard Queen guest starred in issue 9 of that series, "The English Channeler Mystery".

For those interested and not to tie up that thread, below is a relatively complete bibliography of every Queen mystery, to date.

OTHER COLLECTIONS AND CRITICAL WORKS ON VARIOUS SUBJECTS DO EXIST!

Much was published by the cousins in regards to either crime investigating or EQ presenting mystery anthologies on various subjects with most of the material culled from Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, which Dannay oversaw until his death.)

ELLERY QUEEN, JUNIOR were juvenile novels featuring his “son”. At least one of the cousins oversaw the works and plotted sometimes, but neither actually did any writing.

    The Black Dog Mystery (1941)
    The Golden Eagle Mystery (1942)
    The Green Turtle Mystery (1944)
    The Red Chipmunk Mystery (1946)
    The Brown Fox Mystery (1948)
    The White Elephant Mystery (1950)
    The Yellow Cat Mystery (1952)
    The Blue Herring Mystery (1954)
The Mystery of the Merry Magician (1954)
The Mystery of the Vanished Victim (1954)
    The Purple Bird Mystery (1966)

EVERYTHING ELSE WRITTEN BY OTHERS USING THE QUEEN NAME, BUT NOT FEATURING ELLERY OR HIS FATHER! Cousins had no known involvement with these. Got confusing for readers sometimes between having at least one of these and an official Ellery Queen novel released the same year.

Was the conceit here that these are novels "written" by the character Ellery Queen?

  • Was the conceit here that these are novels "written" by the character Ellery Queen?

Yes, but it was more the publishers' doing than the cousins. Since neither Ellery nor his father appeared in any of them, it's doubtful Dannay and/or Lee ever saw a dime in royalties from those books.

  • Thanks, Lee.

A Study in Terror is the novelisation of a 1965 Sherlock Holmes film, done with Paul W. Fairman. Ellery appears in the novelisation in interspersed framing chapters.

Martin Pasko's homage "A Clue Before Dying!" from Detective Comics #459 turns on the device of a dying clue. The EQ I've read where that's a crucial element is The Siamese Twin mystery. I've read a fair number of the EQs with Ellery, but there are more I haven't read than have.

Queens Quorum is a checklist book on the subject of the most important mystery books of short stories. EQ also edited a large number of misc. author anthologies.
