Iris West-Allen and the Legion of Super-Heroes.

In Flash 203 we get the startlingly revelation that Iris was born native to the 30th century. They even reveal the year she's presently in (corresponding to her age) where the Flash arrives. Given that the LSH is also based in this time...it's drastically different from how Earth was presented there. I consider this another Earth in the multiverse..where Iris' parents not only sent her thru time but Universal space (shades of Alexander Luthor) even though it was never explicitly said...even though one adventure of the Flash ( with Iris' father had him make sure his (Iris' father) ancestor becomes his ancestor. And the 1st story was written by Robert Kanigher (who we know doesn't care for continuity that much) And Cary Bates wrote the 2nd story really should have known better since he was a writer of the Legion around this time. But Crisis puts both this Earth and the Legion's as Earth 1. What do you guys think?

  • Time has the form of a slinky. Each coil recapitulates the earlier part of the previous coil before diverging at a point later than the previous coil diverged from the coil prior to it so e.g. coil 2 perhaps diverged from coil 1 at time zero + 1 minute, coil 3 from coil 2 at time zero + 2 minutes etc. Thus the divergent futures seen in DC Silver/Bronze Age comics (Iris's, the LSH's, Jaxon's [Superman #295], Superman 2965's [Superman #181] etc.) will all come to pass, but they are not parallel futures but the 30th centuries of different slinky loops that diverge at points after our time. The superheroes, not understanding the coil structure of time, often travelled between loops instead of forward along their own coil. Bronze Age DC depicted events on a coil that diverged from Silver Age DC's at a point slightly earlier than the events depicted, accounting for Silver/Bronze Age discrepencies. You'll note this also explains why the heroes could not change the past but sometimes had to deal with potential changes in the course of time stemming from the future (e.g. Action Comics #503). It's obvious when you think about it.

  • Seriously, the first Flash story I ever read was the lead story from The Flash #237, in which Barry tracks down the missing Iris in the future and has to fight Professor Zoom for her. When I read the #260 story the Flash was my favourite superhero. So I'm fond of Central City of the future. One of the good things about Silver/Bronze Age comics was the way creator A would introduce an idea, creator B would build on it, and the heroes' features got richer over time.

  • Even in current books when talking about Earth 1 the legion is considered the definite future. And where Kamandi was concerned in Cancelled Comic Calvacade it had shown that Kamandi's Earth was not Earth 1 but an Earth in the multiverse.

  • Iris was born in the generation before the Legion of Super-Heroes. As seen in The Flash #350, Barry and Iris are reunited in the 30th century for a brief time (days? months? years?), enough so she could get pregnant and have twins who were retconned into Don and Dawn Allen, the Tornado Twins from Adventure Comics #373. Originally they were descendants of the Flash but now they were his direct offspring.

Thus Post-Crisis, Don became the father of future Legionnaire XS while Dawn was the mother of Bart Allen aka Impulse II/Kid Flash II/Flash IV.

  • The contradiction between Flash's 30th century and Superman's 30th century reminds me (for some reason) of the contradiction between Aquaman's 20th Century Atlantis (two legs) and Lori Lemaris' 20th Century Atlantis (fish tails), which were also contemporaneous. Did they ever explain this before they got rid of Lori Lemaris?

  • Yes, there were two different Atlantean cities on the sunken continent of Atlantis. Aquaman's legged people were from Poseidonis while Lori Lemaris' mer-people were from Tritonis!

  • I guess that's why people in France have two eyes and people in Sweden have three.photo tongue.gif

  • how did they explain she was born in the generation b4 the legion pre-crisis??? that's why i posted the page of her being in 2970; and oh they were together a month. So presumably all this timeline/earth perished and got replaced by a post crisis version that was part of Post Crisis' Sigma Earth where the same events happened but that Post Crisis Iris and Post Crisis Barry Allen conceived the Tornado Twins.

  • "Time has the form of a slinky."

That's my quote of the day.

  • They didn't. Iris' 30th century was very different from the Legion's 30th century. All the connecting came Post-Crisis.
