Celebrity-Laden Cast Features Matt Ryan Reprising his Acclaimed Television Role as Constantine

To battle unparalleled supernatural forces, Batman must combine efforts with a new team of heroes – led by occult specialist John Constantine – in the next DC Universe Original Movie, Justice League Dark. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment, the full-length animated film arrives from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on February 7, 2017.

Justice League: Dark will be available on Blu-ray™ Deluxe Giftset ($39.99 SRP), featuring an exclusive Constantine figurine; Blu-ray™ Combo Pack ($24.98 SRP); and DVD ($19.98 SRP). The film will be available to own on Digital HD ($19.99 HD, $14.99 SD) starting January 24, 2017.

When innocent civilians begin committing unthinkable crimes across Metropolis, Gotham City and beyond, Batman must call upon mystical counterparts to eradicate this demonic threat to the planet. Enter Justice League Dark, reluctantly led by the Hellblazer himself, John Constantine. Like Batman, Constantine is a cunning, often cynical loner who is the best at his chosen profession – but quickly realizes the sinister forces plaguing the planet will require help from other supernatural alliances. Forming a new “league” with sorceress Zatanna, otherworldly Deadman, and Jason Blood and his powerful alter ego Etrigan the Demon, this team of Dark Arts specialists must unravel the mystery of Earth’s supernatural plague and contend with the rising, powerful villainous forces behind the siege – before it’s too late for all of mankind.

Actor Matt Ryan, who set the standard for the role of Constantine on the Warner Bros. live-action television series, returns to the role in animated form alongside Jason O’Mara (Terra Nova, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Batman, Camilla Luddington (Grey’s Anatomy) as Zatanna, Nicholas Turturro (NYPD Blue) as Deadman, Ray Chase (Final Fantasy XV videogame) as Jason Blood/Etrigan, Roger R. Cross (24, Arrow) as John Stewart/Swamp Thing, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as Ritchie Simpson, Rosario Dawson (Daredevil, Sin City) as Wonder Woman, Jerry O’Connell (Stand By Me, Crossing Jordan) as Superman, Enrico Colantoni (Flashpoint, Veronica Mars) as Felix Faust, and Alfred Molina (The Da Vinci Code, Spider-Man 2) as Destiny.

Justice League Dark is directed by Jay Oliva (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns).  Story by J.M. DeMatteis and Ernie Altbacker (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) and teleplay by Ernie Altbacker.  Sam Register is Executive Producer.  Benjamin Melniker & Michael Uslan (The Dark Knight trilogy) are co-executive producers.  James Tucker (Batman Bad Blood, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders) is Supervising Producer.

“The chance to bring to life these amazing, complex characters–Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman and Swamp Thing – and the potential for their future adventures makes Justice League Dark a very exciting entry into the DC Universe Original Movies canon,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing. “We are especially excited and honored to have Matt Ryan reprise his TV role as Constantine in this animated film.”

  • Batman had a good line in that clip.

  • I may be wrong, but it looks like Deadman is visible to everyone. Am I wrong or did this change in the comics?

  • Is it just me, or, does anyone else wonder why Gentleman Ghost can be seem by anyone, at anytime; but, Boston is almost never seen by anyone?(except the other mystics)

  • As far as I can tell, Deadman is the only ghost in the DCU who is involuntarily invisible. All the other ghosts I can think of: the Spectre, the Gay/Grim Ghost, the Ghost Patrol, the Gentleman Ghost, and whichever ghosts escape my memory at the moment, were either only invisible when they chose to be, or at least able to appear and speak to any mortal they wished to at will. When Ralph & Sue Dibney were briefly reimagined as a cross between the ghosts from "Topper" and Nick & Nora Charles, they seemed to be in the same state as Deadman, and needed to possess the living to interact with the mortal world, but they didn't really appear enough in that iteration to be sure what limits or abilities they actually had.

  • Good point re: DCU ghost characters.  I assume Arnold Drake (Deadman's creator along with Infantino)

was trying to make Deadman a unique ghost that could not allow others to see him.  In the Silver Age, people in the Phantom Zone could not force themselves to become visible; but, they were not dead.

Rama Kushna's involvement in Deadman's abilities would be the instory explanation.

  • In Deadman's case, his inability to otherwise interact with the material world was a necessary story element in order to basically force him to use his power to possess the living, since he was utterly useless otherwise.  The other ghost characters either had a broader power set, or in the case of the Gentleman Ghost, needed to leave enough wiggle room so that rational characters could attempt to explain away their seemingly supernatural elements.  To my mind, Deadman's having no choice but to possess others made him a more sympathetic, and even heroic figure than other heroes who've had possession powers, like Karma or Jericho, whose actions largely seemed to boil down to "I'll put this other person's body in harm's way while I personally remain in no danger whatsoever".  Possession seems to be one of those powers that just works better for villains, who are expected to treat others as disposable playthings.

  • Today we received and watched the Netflix DVD of Justice League Dark. I thought well it was very well done. I see that J.M. DeMatteis was credited as one of the writers. When I've read his work I've always enjoyed it.

The Swamp thing segments didn't bother me as much as I thought they would, but I'm still not crazy about a talking Swamp Thing.

Etrigan's alter ego Jason Blood dies. Did they kill him in the comics, too?
