Okay , what SHOWCASE PRESENTS volumes have been , in general , the ~ I'll be , somewhat , " Yay ! Team Comics ! " positive and not say " worst " , but the least-liked among those who(m) congregate here ?????

The Mark Merlin volume appears to have become a running joke .

The Robby Reed Dial H For Hero appears to reflect the general " nyuuhh " attitude toward the series by many?? SA fans...those who were older than me !!! ( " Hmmmph " sez I . Don't know what your'e missin' . :-( )

I recall a strongly negative attitude being expressed towards the Ghosts one ( No wonder !!!!!!! No " What Will Happen To The U.S. President Elected In 1980 ??? " text page will do that to a fan !!!!! )

The Blackhawk one , which reflected DC's takeover of the comic from Quality ( One supposes that the earliest stories may have been fully or partly prepared , and in the hopper , before the sale ????? ) , appears to suggest that , just as the one GA Archives of the 'Hawks led to no followups , there will be no...( Gulp ! As G. E. O. R. G. E. put it , " The only excuse for failure is death ! " ! )

  Any others ???????

  • Hmm...of the ones I've read, I've probably least enjoyed Blackhawk, Sea Devils, Eclipso and the Martian Manhunter volumes.  House of Mystery didn't thrill me much either.

  • I haven't bought a bunch of them, but easily it was The War That Time Forgot.

  • I haven't bought any that I didn't enjoy... but I haven't bought a ton of them, either.

I'd love to see a follow-up to the Blackhawk volume of the Evanier/Spiegel issues. The first issue of that run is really terrific, and I'm hoping to track down more of them.

  • ...Sniff ! What volumes of HoM did you have/read ?????????

  • Just the first. And I didn't hate it, it just didn't grab me.

    From the old board:

This was an interesting tome of short stories that were somewhat intriguing.  I wouldn't really call any of them scary, although I'm not sure if that's more because of the overall tone of the comic or because of desensitization.

The art is rock-solid, provided by the likes of Sergio Aragones, Jack Kirby, Alex Toth, Bernie Wrightson and Gil Kane, to name a few.  I do think this is another case where for the most part being in black and white works well.

Personally, I enjoyed the collection, but I think it's best read a little at a time.  The stories are generally mediocre to slightly above mediocre, and the lack of a singular narrative as well as the repetitiveness of the tales makes this a good book to leave on your nightstand, reading two to three issues a night.

  • I'm not sure what the point of this is, really. With a Best, it might be ones you want to buy.

I'd guess most people would say the worst ones were the ones they didn't even bother to buy because they had so little interest.

Quite often, SPs read much better in little bits, one or two issues at a a time, just like steak is better if you don't have it at every meal for a week. Some of them are pretty slight, but they were the change-ups in a big mix of comics (at 12 cents a pop), so it worked.

I didn't have to buy the Dial H SP, because I have all the issues that I bought in the first place (which is also true of many of the other recent SPs). I thought those stories were wacky, but they were unique, and you pretty much knew the style you were gettingn when you went in.

  • I buy the vast majority of Showcases and Essentials, and what I tend to find is that I'll read fix or six stories at a sitting and enjoy them and look forward to reading more.  However, there are some instances where I have to slog my way through, and those are the ones I listed before.

One thing I did like about the Dial H Showcase and the Bat Lash Showcase was the idea that they could reprint some more limited runs.  I wouldn't want the smaller ones for everything, but I knows there's a fair amount of stuff out there I'd like to see reprinted that wouldn't fit into the larger format.

  • I loved the Metamorpho book.

I also liked the Jonah Hex Showcase a lot -- with 300 pages or so of Jonah up front, and then some short runs of lesser-known Western heroes in the back.

  • ...Rob , does that mean in fact that the Jonah book reprinted all?? Some?? of the non-Jonah stories from Jonah's very first ALL-STAR WESTERN appearance on ??????? But it segregated,  them out of timely order , at the back of the book ???
