  • The below are indeed separate - though similar - books:

    30)   Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo, by Yoshio Sawai

    31)   Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo, vol. 1-5, by Yoshio Sawai

  • Impressive!

  • My single favorite manga is probably Excel Saga, although my single favorite author is Doctor Tezuka.

  • Doctor Tezuka would make an excellent Batman villain.

  • I've always said that if I had access to a TARDIS and could arrange any comics crossover I wanted, an FF/Astro Boy crossover done by Lee, Kirby and Tezuka at the height of their powers is the one I'd want to see.

  • I'm surprised no Go Nagai.

  • What would you recommend?
  • Updated this with:

Another, by Hiro Kiyohara, adapted from novels by Yukito Ayatsuji. A fairly entertaining horror/mystery.  Sickly Tokyo high schooler Koichi is sent to live with his maternal grandparents out in the boonies. (His mom died right after he was born, and his dad is in India, for job-related reasons. Dads are often absent in manga.)  When he gets there, he is accepted reaasonably well by his local classmates, until one day he brefirends Mei, a somewhat odd, eyepatch-wearing girl, whose existence no one else acknowledges. Pretty soon, classmates and/or close relatives start dying, and Koichi has to figure out why.  Overall, it's pretty good. There's a twist at the end, that's a bit of a stretch, but not unbearable.  The art is quite good, and suits the style of the story.

Romeo x Juliet, with art by COM, adapted from animation by GONZO x SPWT, in its turn adapted from our Bill.  In Neo Verona, the cruel tyrant Lord Montague has all but wiped out the rival Capulet family an set jhimself up a dictator.  Juliet, the last surviving Capulet, lives in hiding as a boy, and rallies the resistance as the freedom fighter, the Red Whirlwind. One day she meets Lord Montague's son Romeo, and romance, as you have doubtless guessed, ensues, although the story does not quite follow the path you might expect.  In fact, I quite like this, especially as in this story, Romeo and Juliet are not the self-aborbed adolescent twits that they are in Shakespeare's play, but instead are concerned with the plight of the people around them.  Ther eis some manga-goofiness in this - Shakespeare himself is a character in this, as an ally of the Capulets, but overall it's a well-told story.  Again, the art is good in this one, too.

  • It can be a tad dark, but Devilman is pretty good. Probably his best known work is Cutie Honey. He's also credited with creating the first mecha series, Mazinger.  Of the three, I think Devilman is the best. All of them contain a fair amount of gore and a certain amount of perversion as well. Still, each has it's own strengths.
