I picked this book (subtitled “Real Stuff from Old Comic Book Ads!”) up on a whim, and I’m really glad I did. It’s a photo guide of all the actual novelty items that used to be advertised in comic books. The page for each item is subdivided into the following sections: “WE IMAGINED,” “THEY SENT,” “BEHIND THE MYSTERY” (where applicable), and “CUSTOMER SATISFACTION.” All of us here have probably ordered some of these items at one time or another. (I know I have.) I knew they were a rip-off (at least after the first one I ordered), but sometimes I just couldn’t help myself. I had to know how it was a rip-off. But even my nigh-insatiable curiosity would not allow me to order too many of these things just to find out what the gag was. But now, at last, someone else with a truly insatiable sense of curiosity has done so (largely through e-Bay and elsewhere online) for me.

I laughed out loud more than once reading this book.

And it has a glow-in-the-dark cover.
