"Marvel Last Issues"

I did buy the last issue of AVX (as well as all three installments of The Infernal Man-Thing) , it's rare for me to buy MU stuff nowadays...And , re the Marvel NOW! switch I saw a two-page ad in it(I don't have time to dig it up now .) for the last issues pre-NOW! of Cap , Iron Man , and I think Thor...Learning from DC's apparent marketing undersight a year-ish back , eh ???????

  • I must admit, that “FINAL ISSUE” blurb across the top of Fantastic Four #611 was very tempting, but upon closer inspection, I decided I really didn’t care for the art, and… the story is continued. Also, I fell for that “complete-your-collection-special” jazz once before (issue #416).

  • Well, it worked for me, in a sense. I am completing Captain America & not getting the new series because the direction doesn't interest me in the least so it made the perfect jumping off point. I dropped Dark Thunderbolts several months ago & again don't have any interest in the new T-Bolts (BTW, speaking of Cap, what is the difference between the new T-Bolts and the new Scourge, Dennis Dunphy, that he fought a few months ago, I mean besides the brainwashing?) So my Marvel pulls are reduced to Avengers and Uncanny Avengers because I AM a bit curious about this new lineup.
  • I would have bought the last Captain America anyway because I've been following Ed Brubaker's run all along. Like you, I have less than no interest in the new direction (although I do plan to buy the first issue and post a reaction in the "Marvel Now" thread). I was a little surprised to see the current storyline come to an end last issue, giving Brubaker a whole issue to wrap up the series. I can hardly wait!

  • I'm going to buy the Last Issue of ASM. I bought the first one, and I've bought some of the anniversary issues in recent years, some good and some bad.

I'm fully aware that there's little chance it will be the last issue ever, but the combination of that claim and #700 and the anthology approach (and the art by Ramos) made it seem worth getting.

Marvel has really made things confusing, even for collectors paying attention. In December, they've got ASM #699, ASM #699.1, ASM  #700 and Avenging S-M #15.1, billed as the Epilogue to ASM #700. They seem to want people to not know what's going on.

Yup.  DC dumped their sales for July and August as part of the build-up to their big September.  Regular creators were pulled from some of their titles and several series finished up with fill-ins.  Marvel may be copying DC's big move, but at least they're learning from some of their mistakes.

I probably won't buy "last issues" for any titles that I'm not already getting, though I am tempted to come back for Brubaker's Final Issue of Captain America considering the past quality of that series.

  • I think that 699.1 is another sneaky zero issue for a spinoff.  I read the solicitation and it looks like it's a set-up for a new Morbius series.

It sounds like that's it's purpose, but it also could tie up threads from the previous story to ensure readers are forced to pick it up to learn the end of the story (if such a thing exists) and get exposed to the Morbius title. Not being much involved with the in-continuity MU, I'm not sure what the point of the .1 issues is supposed to be.

When the "epilogue" to a title's last issue is in another title's .1 issue, then I'm pretty lost.

  • The original purpose of the .1 issues was to provide a "good jumping on point" for a series, but it quickly quit being that. There were a lot of complaints during the first round of .1 issues that it didn't even accomplish that goal then. I don't know what it is supposed to be now, but another try at getting another issue out on some months. Some series end up with three issues in month with double shipping and a .1 issue.

  • Well, since the only issues of Amazing Spider-Man I've bought in recent years are #500 and #600, I suppose I'll get #700 just to keep the string alive ...

  • It's kinda working on me. I have complete runs of most long-running Marvel books (Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four being notable exceptions), so I might as well finish them. Otherwise it's like running a marathon and quitting when you can see the finish line.

However, I am well and truly cured of the "completist" disease. Which means I feel no urge to continue any given title just because I always have. That's free-ing in a way, but also presents a dilemma: What books WILL I keep reading? I have six months or so to decide, because I'm taking this opportunity to switch to trade-waiting Marvel books.

I'm likely to continue most of the Avengers titles. Anyone have any other suggestions?
