More eBay comics that won't be selling

Continuing our discussion from last February (https://captaincomics.ning.com/forum/topics/comics-that-wont-be-selling-on), I don't buy much these days on eBay. But I like to follow it if only for the entertainment value. And sometimes, listings make me laugh right out loud.

In this case (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220825309763&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123), it was the image of the six comics on someone's living room floor, as photographed from a satellite in geosynchronous orbit above the Earth. Then I saw the price and decided I had to share.

I especially love the photos that people post that are out of focus or use their flash and create a gigantic flare on the top of the plastic the comic is still in To post a pic on eBay requires some type of electronics, and I'm figuring 99% of them are digital photos. So why not RETAKE the photo when you get one that looks like that?  [Answer: Because they don't know what they're selling, which is condition.]

There have been others recently that made me wonder what they were thinking, but this one really makes me wonder about how they arrived at this posting. eBay is the gift that just keeps giving.

  • I'd hazard a guess that s/he looked up the issues in a price guide but didn't understand enough to account for condition. Thus, s/he is asking Mint condition prices.

The big trick here is to find some big Jerry Lewis fan. Granted, at least Lewis is in the news right now but I can't imagine that'll help too much.

Would I like to read these comics? Sure! But I'd be willing to pay 15$ for the entire lot and that includes shipping.

  • Funny, I've actually got one of the issues in that photo (the one with the gorilla).

You'd think people would want to post decent scans if they want to sell something. Then again, you'd think a website devoted to comics in general would want decent scans, and I've found from painful experience that often just ain't so.

  • I've got them all, and I'll let them go for half that. Plus free shipping! I think his $5 shipping fee is really gonna dampen interest.

  • Astonishingly, this guy has no eBay history, meaning this is his first sale. Who'da thunk it?

I've already got all those JERs, and I don't think I ever paid more than 3 bucks for any of them. The DEAN & JERs go for quite a bit more, but the JER solos, especially late in the post-Go-Go Checks run, all probably still fetch in the 3-buck range.

  • If you can find them!

  • Thumbing thru the JERRY LEWIS covers at the GCD (mostly really awful scans), it cracked me up to see how many of those issues have "monster" themes.  The 1st one I ever got was a reprint annual.  The 1st story was the one with Krankenstein, Count Drinkula, and Dog-Boy!  The 2nd featured "Camp Whack-A-Boy".

I'm reminded that I once saw Bob Oksner at a small comic-con on City Line Ave. in Philly. At the time, I had no idea who he was.  If only I'd known he did those JERRY LEWIS comics!

  • I'll have to snatch those up, looks like a great buy! eBay sure does provide hours of entertainment value. The same person (with a feedback score of "0", mind you) also offers up the first appearance of Sgt. Rock:

Check those photos out. "This comic book is in very fine condition." No, it is not!

    I'm glad you did!

("As photographed from a satellite in geosynchronous orbit above the Earth." Heh.)
  • I looked at the Sgt. Rock post. The person may have no idea of what the rating system actually means but it seems they're honest enough to make the actual condition clear.

  • The price on the Sgt Rock comic is ..ah...aspirational, to say the least.

Considering you can get that story in the first Sgt Rock Showcase for $16...

(with maybe 30 other stories thrown in too)
