My List...

...is getting very small, I just realized. It currently looks like:

  • Amazing Spider-Man (thrice-monthly)
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  • Captain America
  • Dark X-Men
  • Detective Comics
  • Echo
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Incredible Hercules
  • Mighty Avengers
  • Siege
  • S.W.O.R.D.
  • Uncanny X-Men
  • Wonder Woman
  • X-Factor

And then, when issues actually come out:

  • Fallen Angel
  • Phonogram
  • RASL

That's only 16 monthly titles (counting Amazing Spider-Man three times, of course), which is probably the lowest I've been in a while.

Add to that that, once I actually remember to tell my shop, I'm going to be dropping Wonder Woman, and then Dark X-Men, Mighty Avengers, Siege, and S.W.O.R.D. will all be ending within the next couple of issues, and things are starting to look pretty slim.

Now, I'm okay with this — money's not exactly free-flowing in the library world right now — and I'm not particularly demanding new titles to add to my list, but it does give me an opportunity to consider new titles.

So, given that, what would you suggest to me? There are a few caveats:

  • I'm not particularly keen on Geoff Johns or Jeph Loeb at the moment, so I probably won't get into any of their books
  • Supergirl is on my radar, but I'm kind of waiting until it's a bit more independent of the Superman titles than it is now
  • Batman & Robin, Ex Machina, Fables and Ultimate Spider-Man I collect in trade form
  • I've been more into Marvel's shared universe (Dark Reign et al) stuff than DC's (Blackest Night & etc.), so I'm more inclined towards free-standing DC titles, but am okay with more continuity-heavy Marvel books

So whatcha got? :)

Check out the Secret Headquarters (my store) website! It's a pretty lame website, but I did it myself, so tough noogies

Listen to WOXY.com, it's the future of rock-n-roll!

  • I have been enjoying Secret Warriors and Invincible Iron Man from Marvel. Both I would recommend reading from the beginning though. I believe there's a new Iron Man series beginning in April which I believe is by Jonathan Hickman but I'm not sure on that. Don't forget there's a new Avengers book coming out in May after the other titles end in April, IIRC.

I second the Invincible recommendation as well. I read it in trades, it's a good series.

Most of what I read in DC is by Geoff Johns so I don't have anything on that front for you. I did read one issue of REBELS and liked what I read. I may back track and pick up the trades.
  • I'd echo Dagwan on Unwritten and Madame Xanadu. Madame Xanadu is really classic DC magic stuff...it wouldn't have to be Vertigo at all if they thought they could sell it in the mainstream DCU. And Unwritten has the best mainstream crossover possibility of any Vertigo title since Fables. They're both really good, and there are inexpensive trades to start with. I love Criminal, too, and it's the only title I'm currently buying monthly. It's somewhat irregular, so it probably wouldn't always be a monthly buy.
  • Here's what I read on a monthly basis or through trades.

    Usagi Yojimbo
Great Ten - Issue 4 just came out - brand new characters with very cool backstories
    Daredevil (trades)
    Fantastic Four
    Invincible Iron Man (trades)
Marvel Adventures Spider-Man - Paul Tobin's take on Spider-Man has been my favorite for about a year
Uncanny X-Men - I had stopped for awhile due to a dislike of Greg Land's art, but recent events have me back reading the book.
    New Mutants
X-Men Legacy - Just started reading these two again as they tie in with Uncanny so much
X-Force - Another I had dropped after two or so issues, but things I've read got me to buy the collections...and it's some very interesting stuff. Michael Choi's art is just beautiful.
Anchor - I love Phil Hester's writing, this and Golly!, when it ships, are tons of fun.
    RASL (trades)
Kill Shakespeare - this doesn't come out until April,but...well, just read the description:

In this dark tale, the Bard’s most famous heroes embark upon a journey to discover a long-lost soul. Hamlet, Juliet, Othello, Falstaff, Romeo and Puck search for a reclusive wizard who may have the ability to assist them in their battle against the evil forces led by the villains Richard III, Lady Macbeth and Iago. That reclusive wizard? William Shakespeare.

    I can't resist.

And I can't recommend Naoki Urasawa's comics highly enough. Pluto and 20th Century Boys were my favorite comics of 2009

I was wrong about the new Iron Man series. It'll be written by Fred Van Lente.
  • I forgot...I really like Greg Rucka's Oni book, Stumptown.
  • Thanks for the initial suggestions... There's some definite food for thought here.

Anyone have any insight into Image's Chew? I think that's been getting positive response in the comics media, hasn't it?
  • My sister and brother-in-law LOVED it. Holly and I...not so much...
  • I'll second the recommendation for REBELS. With the exception of two issues, it really is playing in its own corner of the DCU. I'll also add my voice to the chorus for Invincible Iron Man. I've been reading it since issue 1 and Fraction has not disappointed me yet.
  • Secret Six and Power Girl both seem to play well on their own... and are both funny *and* adventurous.

    I'd also recommend Criminal, too.
