"My" X-Men Line-Up

Same rules as the JLA and Avengers threads.   Here’s my line-up:

1)The Angel (Warren Worthington III)

2)The Beast (Henry McCoy)

3)Colossus (Piotr Rasputin)

4) Cyclops (Scott Summers)

5)Iceman (Bobby Drake)

6)Jubilee (Jubilation Lee)

7)Marvel Girl (Jean Grey)

8)Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner)

9)Rogue

10)Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde)

11)Storm (Ororo Munroe)

12)Wolverine (James “Logan” Howlett)

Another list where you could probably make a good guess as to when I was most interested in X-Men comics.  The Beast is an odd one for me.  I’m equally comfortable with him being an X-Man or an Avenger.  I also feel like the X-Men are better off without Professor X around. He’s never been a favorite character of mine.

  • For me it's the (so brief as to be non-existent) "What are we going to do with thirteen X-Men?" period.

  • Hmm

    Cyclops. Gotta have him.

    Storm

    Nightcrawler

    Kitty

    Colossus

    Rogue

    Psylocke (proof to her ninja-zation)

  • Cyclops (Jim Lee costume)

    Jean Grey (cartoon outfit)

    Banshee

    Wolverine

    Storm

    Nightcrawler

    Colossus

    Kitty Pryde

    Rogue

Gambit (who I would never have picked but he grew on me in Mr. & Mrs. X)

  • Cyclops

    Marvel Girl

    Storm

    Colossus

    Wolverine

    Nightcrawler

Kitty Pryde (as a POV character)

Basically the all-new,all-different X-Men, minus short-timers Banshee, Sunfire and Thunderbird.

My choices might surprise some, because it surprises me. The normal thing for most of us is to pick the team that was in existence when we were 10-12, which to me would be the original five. But to tell you the truth, my enthusiasm was largely based on the X-team being such underdogs. They were really weak!

When they faced Magneto the first time (The X-Men #1), they had no business surviving. When they faced the Avengers (The X-Men #9), they were so laughably outclassed that the li'l Capn actually laughed. When they met Spider-Man (The X-Men #35), the li'l Capn realized that Roy Thomas had to introduce contrivances to keep Spidey from beating all five of them at once.

So among the many excellent things introduced in Giant-Size X-Men #1 was a team that could go toe to toe with anyone. This team didn't need my sympathy. They had my respect!

And I agree with those who have dissed Professor X in this thread. Man, what an a-hole he was in the first 66 issues! He kept Lucifer a secret (The X-Men #21). He lied about his past with, and knowledge of, Magneto. He kept Juggernaut unconscious in the basement, and kept that a secret (The X-Men #13-32). He pretended to lose his powers in an early issue (I've forgotten which one). He saddled the team with the unstable Mimic (The X-Men #27). He lied about dying (The X-Men #41). He lied about Marvel Girl's powers and origin throughout. He made Marvel Girl lie about his fake death (The X-Men #65). He hid the existence of Gabriel Summers from Scott.

And let us never forget the obvious: He sent teenagers into battle ... against Magneto.
