New Marvel #1's - Will I/You Be Buying #2?

For me so far:

Amazing Spider-Man: No.  There's some interesting ideas in here, but not enough to spare some of my limited budgets of comics money/reading time.

Guardians of the Galaxy:  Yes. Just interesting enough to give them a chance.    

                                   

The New Avengers: Yes. So far, they seem to be treating Squirrel Girl well.        

                                   

Spider-Gwen: Yes. So far, they've maintained the quality from the previous book.      

                             

The Uncanny Avengers:  Maybe. It's mildly interesting, but I really don't like Deadpool.

Picked up A-Force #1 today.

Read the A-Force book.  It was alright, but not compelling. Currently leaning towards not following on with it.

Did it explain why the team was all chicks?

The "in story" reason is that they were folded into the new Marvel U from a Paradise Island type portion of Battleworld. The big picture reason is that the book is just part of Marvel's agenda to put out more female-friendly comics.

As I've said before, I have no problem with an all-female Avengers, and I hope to God it attracts some female readers. Lay on, MacDuff, as they say. My only question was whether there was an in-story reason that made it plausible, and not obvious and painful!

Who's being spiteful or angry? If they think they need more female friendly comics then they must think what they've been doing before wasn't female friendly. Otherwise there'd be no need to make changes.

The New Mutants was almost all female for years, to the point they were complaining there weren't enough boys on the team. While it would be unrealistic, perhaps the best way would be to have one female character attempt to contact Avengers for assistance and only other females were available at that moment. After working together a bit they'd decide to stay together.

Of course, that would be unrealistic as well.

In most situations where there is an actual choice, some genre mixing is both expected and welcome.

A team that is _mostly_ composed of females could be an interesting line-up, though.  Particularly if the characters themselves begin to comment on that.  A skilled writer could make that work and it would be refreshing.

There's really no realistic way to explain why your team is all female except to just say you didn't want any men on the team. There aren't enough female heroes (let alone female Avengers) for it to be believable that they just happened by accident to be all women.

There are a few characters that it would make sense to seek out, but not enough to form a full team. If you wanted power you'd try to get Thor, and Thor is currently female. If you wanted a great tactician you'd want Steve Rogers or the Black Widow, and last I heard Rogers is still old. If you needed someone that could change size for some reason, you might pick Jan instead of Hank or Scott Lang. Beyond that you'd be back to picking women because they were women.

I really think the Avengers should have kept the idea they started before Onslaught changed everything. They were putting heroes on call that had certain skills. If they needed to operate underwater and Namor was unavailable they'd call Stingray for instance. A different team in every storyline would make it possible to have an all female team assemble at some point.

One thing I wouldn't want to see is the old "all the men in the world are dying/disappearing/turning into monsters, and the women have to work together and figure out why."
