Sorry if this has been discussed previously. http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/02/26/the-future-of-the-legion/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter So I was keeping up on the news when I came across this story. We have already seen the death in question which I kind of liked in the way it was a pointless death to the effect that it wasn’t beating up a major bad guy in a blaze of glory but done saving his teammates. Much more real & as far as I am concerned a much better death than about any I have seen done before. The thing that bothers me in this article is the idea that the Legion is now inspired by the Justice League & the idea in the next few months, the team will be readjusted to compare with the JL lineup. Damn good thing they weren’t inspired by Red Hood and the Outlaws or Batman and Robin (R.I.P.). Seriously though, the name Legion. C’mon “We are Legion because we are many” not “We are Legion because we can fit our team in a mini-van”. Legion equals numbers and the Justice League basically protects Earth. The Legion protects the United PlanetS. Plural there. There are times when the full team (which usually isn’t there issue to issue) isn’t enough so instead they have decided to pare down to a 7 member group? I don’t know. Maybe I am looking at this all wrong. What does everyone else think?

  • I hope not. I read the legion partly for the mulitude of characters and how they interact. If they p\reduce the team to 7, it will make it like all the other team books. To me it would be a dropping point.

  • Let me just say that this news doesn't inspire me to start picking up Legion again.

  • I'll have to say when I read/saw what happened to Sun Boy, I didn't believe it.

    Be there, done that.

At least it wasn't given away on the cover.

  • When did Jack Kirby start drawing the Legion?

Seriously, thank God Giffen's not being abstract again but c'mon!

As for "changes", we have to see but I can't imagine a series set in the future among a myriad of planets could effectively limit themselves to seven members out of the massive Legion mythos.

Sounds like the creators are getting lazy to me!

What he said. First Damian Wayne, now this?

  • I picked this issue up (first in about 15 years of this title) for Keith Giffen's artwork. I thought the story was pretty good and I thought the art was amazing. This is the best Giffen work I've seen in a long time.

  • I said elsewhere that Sun Boy may actually stay dead for while since there is such a large cast of characters. That large cast is one of the things that makes the Legion, the Legion. If want to read about the Justice League, or a team inspired by them or whatever. I have that series a few times over coming out from DC.

I will do my usual wait and see, but if I don't like where it is going I will stop collecting the series. Which will be the first time in <gulp!> over 20 years.

  • Hearing this, one wonders if DC understands the appeal of the Legion is the large cast, and the ability to tell lots of different stories because of that diversity.

  • Like most everyone else, I can't see the point to making the Legion a small team, but other than rumors, I'm not really convinced that's the direction things are going.  It almost seems like they want to make the distances mean more, causing a focus on spread out smaller teams.  Plural, not singular.  I could see them going that route so that they can have more meaningful stories without having to go the epic route all the time.

Not really convinced of this.  Dirk seems to be one of Levitz's favourite characters and the whole eating of the body thing suggests there's probably more going on.  However, if he does stay dead for an extended period of time, this will be like the 3rd or 4th time Sunboy's been killed.  That has to make him one of the harder luck Legionnaires.
