I was watching the classic tear jerker "An Affair to Remember" with my wife during the recent Holiday Season!  The one with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.  Anyway I noticed at least two Superman referrences in this movie!  One of the side characters is named "Lois Clark."  Later there is a mention of a "Miss Lane." I looked this up but could find nothing on it.  Is this just a fluke or was it done on purpose?  Thanks Joe

  • The IMDB says the name Lois Clarke was used in the 1939 version, Love Affair. It doesn't list a Miss Lane as having appeared in that version.

Reportedly Love Affair was released April 7, 1939. I don't know enough about 1930s Hollywood to infer when the script was likely done, but that might be too early for Lois Clarke to have been a gag name. Action Comics #1 was released (DC Indexes says) May 3 1938, and the Superman daily newspaper strip started Jan. 16 1939. The radio show didn't start until 1940.

"Miss Lane" in the later movie could be a nod to Lois, as she was often called that on the TV show and it was still running in 1957, when An Affair to Remember appeared. Although the IMDB doesn't list a Miss Lane in the earlier version, the film may have had a corresponding character.

  • Lois Clarke could always be a gag amalgam of Lewis and Clark. I've never seen the film (despite my swooning over Kerr in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp). Is the side character in any way an explorer?

  • No...Lois Clark was not an explorer.  She was a wealthy socialite.
