I was watching the Savage/Warrior "retirement" match on disk last night, and it came to the ending where Elizabeth threw Sherri out of the ring, and the thought came to me, "Both of these women are dead now, it's depressing."

On a positive note, if you get a chance to see the Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada match from New Japan's Wrestle Kingdom 11, watch it. I don't think it's as good as some have said, but it was darn well done for the most part.

I would say mostly a sad coincidence.  With the exception of Nicole Bass, these were all senior citizens.  Chavo Senior was the only one under 70.

Nikolai Volkoff was one of the main heels during Hulk Hogan's first reign as WWF Champ so he was included in a lot of the Hulkamania frenzy like the toys, cartoon show and Cyndi Lauper videos. He was your basic no-good Commie but was a bit goofy which, no doubt, led to fans becoming fond of him.
