R.I.P. Marty Pasko

I just saw this post by Alan Brennert on Facebook:

"We're all braced for bad news during these terrible times, but nothing could have prepared me for the call I received this morning telling me that my old and dear friend Martin Pasko passed away last night, of natural causes, at the age of 65."

  • Mark Evanier writes about it on his "News from ME" blog: "Martin Pasko, R.I.P."

  • Like Mark says, Marty was a prominent lettercol guy before turning pro. Surprised he was 6-7 years younger than me.

  • Aww, that's too bad. He wrote some of my favorite DC stories back in the day. I actually thought he would have been older. Such a shame.

  • I haven't read much of his stuff, but I did think his Swamp Thing run was underrated. I think I still have those issues. I would have expected him to be older, too.

  • I see a lot of obituaries credit Marty Pasko as one of the writers of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. I was not aware of that.

When I see his name, I think of the Bronze Age Superman. He and Cary Bates defined the character for a generation, which is a pretty good legacy.

  • Bronze Age Superman is what I think of first when I think of Marty. He wrote the first comic I ever remember reading, Superman 314. It set me on the path of being a fan for life. I mentioned this once on Twitter, and he replied, "Then I did my job."

I'm glad he knew how well he did his job. His comics literally shaped my life. This loss really stings.

(And if you haven't heard his interviews on Word Balloon, seek them out. He was my favorite guest on that podcast, with both heartfelt stories about how he related to Superman, insider show-biz stories, and great anecdotes of comics creators. Well worth a listen.)
