They missed a real stinker, Santa Claus and the Ice Cream Bunny. It's on youtube and it makes Plan 9 look like Citizen Kane.

The Film: Another one from 1959 (must've been a good year for bad movies). A young doctor's girlfriend (Wife? I'm not sure.) is killed in a car accident. He keeps her head alive in a pan while he goes hunting for a new body for her. He keeps a monster in a closet for some reason. This is another picture I watched when I was little. At the time I remember thinking how scary the closet monster was. Now, I just think what a sleazebag Doctor Protagonist is. The closing credits give the movie's title as "The Head That Wouldn't Die".
The Host Segments: Crow and Servo test Mike's knowledge of bad movies. Mike invents the Gutter-Bumber-Chute. Doctor F invents the Dream-Buster, for popping little kids' balloons. Mike tries and fails to gain control of the SOL. Mike and the Bots design hats for the woman in the movie. Mike tells Crow and Servo an embarrassing story from his past. Jan in the Pan (Mary Jo Pehl) visits the SOL. Mike offends her. Doctor F has designs on Frank's head.
Rating: A fairly good episode, and good start for Mike's tenure as host.

Show 208: "The Lost Continent", first broadcast 11/24/1990
The Film: This is from 1951, and features, Cesar Romero, Hugh Beaumont, Sid Melton and Whit Bissell. The government loses a satellite, and a team of scientists and airmen are sent to retrieve it. They land on a remote island filled with stop motion dinosaurs that I suspect of being form another movie. A so-so picture - about 907 of its 83 minutes are taken up with a segment showing the protagonists climbing a mountain. Interesting seeing Romero as someone other than the Joker, though.
The Host Segments: Joel gives the Bots a football-style peptalk. The Mads go on about rock climbing. Frank invents an exercise treadmill that moves around. They have no time for Joel's invention. Hugh Beaumont (Mike Nelson) visits the SOL, claiming to be one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Joel and the Bots act out "The Explorers - A Quinn Martin Production". It ends weirdly. Joel and the Bots see a Coll thing, but the viewers do not. Joel and the Bots discuss the film.
Rating: A so-so episode. The interminable rock climbing scenes become tedious, despite the cast's best efforts.

Show 417: "Crash of the Moons". first broadcast 11/28/1992
The Short: An episode of General Hospital, from what I imagine is very early in the show's run. A married guy appears to be interested in a woman he isn't married to. Meh.
The Film: From 1954, this is apparently several episodes of Rocky Jones, Space Ranger (a sort of ur-Star Trek). Our hero and his pals do their best to save the inhabitants of two doomed planets. john Banner is in this! Yay! Always like to see John Banner.
The Host Segments: Joel is teaching Servo macrame. Crow is selling grit. Actual grit, not the newspaper. (Aside: Did anyone ever actually buy or sell GRIT? I've never seen a copy in real-life.)
The Mads have invented Deep 13 Toothpaste. Joel has invented the Rock 'n' Wreck guitar. Crow and Servo try to woo Gypsy by singing "The Gypsy Moons". Joel invents Banner-Grams. Crow has written a teleplay. Servo critiques it harshly. John Banner (Mike Nelson) visits the SOL. Joel sends a Banner-Gram to Deep 13.Rating: Quite good, an old favorite. The movie is good for what it is, and the host segments are amusing.

Show 621: "the Beast of Yucca Flats, first broadcast 1/21/1995
The Shorts: "Money Talks" - The Ghost of Benjamin Franklin teaches a gangly, somewhat dimwitted teenager how to save money. Ah, for the days when fifty cents was a lot of money!
"Progress Island U.S.A." - Propaganda film about what a great place Puerto Rico is, and you should definitely invest there. The soundtrack seems to be lifted from a 1970's police drama.
The Film: This 1961 Coleman Francis effort features Tor Johnson as a defecting scientist who is nuked and becomes a menace to society. This is a terrible movie. Seriously, Plan 9 From Outer Space is brilliant cinema compared to this. It's really badly-made. There's no soundtrack to speak of, just some nonsensical narration and a few lines of insipid dialogue. For me, the saddest part of all is seeing poor Tor, stumbling around the desert, looking less like an atomic mutant, and more like somebody's poor old demented grandpa who somehow wandered out of the home and got lost.
The Host Segments: Mike is wallpapering. He is doing a bad job, and the Bots aren't helping much. The Mads are supporting Proposition Deep 13. Mike and the Bots are against it. The SOL is disturbed by a loud house party. Crow asks Mike if it's 11:30. Over and over and over. Crow speaks for the Film Anti-Preservation Society. Joel and the Bots declare victory. the Mads concede.
Ratings: Eh. The host segments are OK, but the film itself is a real drag to watch.

Show 813: "Jack Frost", first broadcast 7/12/1997
The Film: The 1966 picture is from Russia, and tells the travails of Simon LeBon-looking dimwit Ivanoushka and his would-be love interest, Nastinka, as they deal with her evil stepmother, her ugly stepsister (imagine Tom Petty in drag), a wicked with (imagine Al Lewis on acid channeling Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies), an annoying little mushroom guy and the titular spirit of winter. It's mildly amusing in a trippy sort of way. It's hard to judge these dubbed pictures, because you can't tell how the dubbed performance compares to the original performance.
The Host Segments: "Michael Nelson is...The Lord of the Dance!" Bobo and Observer argue about who's in charge while Pearl is away. they bring Mike down to arbitrate. He almost talks Observer into watching the movie in his place. Yakov Smirnov (Patrick Brantseg) visit the SOL. he is unhelpful. Crow is a bear. Bobo and Observer try to get along. Crow asks Earl Torgeson (Paul Chaplin), who is a random butcher in Sanford, Maine, about Russian folklore. He is unhelpful. Servo tries to be cute, but Mike and Crow aren't buying it. Bobo and Observer seek Mike's opinion regarding ape movies. Pearl returns and settles the dispute.
Rating: this is a pretty good episode. The film is watchable - it's beautiful filmed - and the host segments are funny enough.

Show 107: "Robot Monster", first broadcast 12/23/1989
The Shorts: Two episodes of Commando Cody in "Radar Men from the Moon. In Chapter Four: "Flight to Destruction", the heels kidnap Joan as a lure for Cody. Cliffhanger: The plane Cody and Joan are in crashes! In Chapter Five: "Murder Car", the heels are short of money. Cliffhanger: A stolen ambulance hits Cody's car! These Republic serials are amusing, but pretty badly-made.
The Film: The film is from 1953, and features Ro-Man, whose alien costume is a gorilla suit with a diving helmet and antennae on. This is a weird, trippy movie. Very badly-written.
The Host Segments: Joel explains the show. The Mads invent the self-inflating whoopee cushion. Joel invents the cumber-bubble-band. Joel and the Bots try to work out if the plane stunt in the short could really have happened. The Great Guidance (Crow) commands Ro-Man (Servo) to kill the Hu-Man (Joel). Joel and the bots discuss surrealism. Joel and the bots do a skit about Ro-Man. The Mads are weirded out.
Favorite Quotes: "I'm surrounded by idiots of my own design!" -Joel
"Could we have sent a stranger person into space?" - Dr. F
Rating: An OK episode. Watchable, but not great.

In Invaders of Mars (1953) the naïve elements are supposed to reflect a child's view of the world. I took them as straight naiveties until I read an article making this case, and it convinced me. I think the same is true of the naiveties in Robot Monster: there's the bubble machine, the crazy honeymoon.
