Remaining Fanzines and Magazines?

Oh , the irony . Let's continue something that was discussed at the MSA Old Home , namely , remaining print comic fanzines - And , for diversity , pro/semi-pro/" pro-zine " comics publications as well .

  CBG remains in business . The Comics Journal has now announced that they will come out annually , with " a 600-page plus " issue .

  I am Facebook friends with Jon B. Cooke but I haven't yet checked to see if his Comic Book Artist has managed to continue recently , post-its Old Home...

  Toomorrows , which indeed has itself a little nook/corner , with The Jack Kirby Collectore , Alter Ego , and Back Issue .

  Now , including the " fan " side too...........

Thanks for the update, Rob! Robert Jennings also is still doing his (free) zine, Fadeaway, on a pretty regular biimonthly basis. With many of them being irregular, it's hard to know which ones are just on a break and which have died. I haven't seen the HoLLywood Eclectern, about John Stanley, in several years, and I think it may be gone for good.

I received The Best of Punk Magazine last summer as a gift and was prompted to finally give it a good look-thru on Friday afternoon. This was a fanzine from the 1970's about punk music, but it has tons of comics in it. Many of the individual issues have the "Top 99" things in punk culture. The lists have things that were very popular at the time in that world: Will Eisner's Spirit, Howard the Duck, Heavy Metal Magazine, and Star Wars.

This is one of those books that just makes me think of spending the night at my friend's house (who had a cool older brother) or my grandparents' basement (I had uncles in high school when I was a kid), where I would just pore over stuff like this.

In addition to FADEAWAY (which reminds me, I need to LOC the two most recent issues), there are several other science fiction fanzines still being produced, as you noted in an earlier post.

One of them is FLAG, a monthly SF fanzine which is paper only (no digital version) published by Andy Hooper, 11032 30th Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98125.  The most recent issue was #11, which came out in December 2013.  Andy says that FLAG #12 will be mailed out early January (in fact it may have been mailed out already and in-transit to readers' mailboxes). 

FLAG doesn't have much at all about comics in it -- heck, not even much about science fiction, depending on the issue -- but is an interesting read for anyone wanting to experience a "frequent fanzine" done on paper today.  Copies of FLAG are available for "The Usual" (trade, contribution, letter of comment).  My favorite part of FLAG has been the attempt at labeling certain eras of SF fandom, from the 1930s to present, as well as listing notable characteristics of those eras (prominent fans, prominent fanzines, and prominent trends associated with each era).

Speaking of digital versions, many zines, including FADEAWAY, are offered online at www.efanzines.com, which we've probably mentioned before but is worth it again for people not reading this entire thread.

FADEAWAY's latest issue, #38, was posted there in December. Not all of the 'zines are about SF or comics, but there are so many there's gotta be something to interest everyone. It's fun to look through them and realize there are still some out there.

  I never saw any RC cop movies as I remember . Was it as Judge Dredd all-fired derivative as all that ?????????

Judge Dredd debuted in 2000 A.D. in #2 (March 5,1977). He was NOT cover-featured.

The first Robocop movie was in 1987.

RoboCop's look is similar to Dredd, but he's a cyborg. As far as I know Dredd is fully human.

Robin Snyder's THE COMICS! is still publishing.  The most recent issue (October 2013) came out last month and contained a short letter by Steve Ditko noting the passing of Joe Kubert.  Email Robin at [e-mail] for ordering information.

I have a subscription to GEEK. I picked up a couple issues and it looked good, so I decided I'd buy enough to make it worth the discount for a subscription over ordering individual ones from my comics guy. 

The first issue I saw had Nate Fillion reading a book with a Green Lantern comic tucked inside. That was good enough for me!

There's a remake of Robocop coming soon, I just saw an ad for it over the weekend. It looks pretty much like the original with slightly slicker design. He's a cyborg, $6-million cop, whereas Dredd was all human. I think Robocop has some fancy tricks he can do with his robot body, so he's not really that much like Dredd except for the helmet a little.

...The particular GEEK I'm referencing , when I paged through it , MSA , had very little ---actual--- comics coverage that I saw , MSA , and of that - Um , basically some quasi-reviews/puff piecess?? (perhaps to harsh) in their " Gift Guide " feature - for instance , a positive review for the two volumes of Star Trek newspaper strips from the 70s/80 , probably no Silver at all , so...
