American Vamipire: Lord of Nightmares #1 (DC/Vertigo, $2.99)

Scott Snyder (w), Dustin Nguyen (a)

I don't know how to review this without giving away the ending, so I'll just say "It's good."

And that it involves Felicia Book, one of my most favorite characters in one of my most favorite series, American Vampire. She's half American vampire -- her father was infected when she was conceived -- which makes her slightly superhuman. But moreover, she's a complex, unpredictable and highly motivated character who is just plain fascinating.

We last saw Book in the last American Vampire miniseries, Survival of the Fittest, where she went on a mission for the Vassals of the Morning Star with Cash McCogan to investigate rumors of a serum that could cure vampirism. She wanted it for herself, and Cash wanted it for his son, a baby who was infected with vampirism in utero. At the end of that series, Book had the baby and the serum, and was going underground to see if she could cure and raise the boy.

That's pretty much where we start this series, with Book in Paris with a boy who is considerably older and going to school -- so, obviously, the serum is working to some degree. (If the boy had remained completely a vampire, he would not age and he couldn't go to French schools in the daytime.) Meanwhile, something is happening at the London base for the Vassals, something that will draw Book back into harness.

Again, I'm not going to spoil what that is. All I will say is that Scott Snyder is writing it, and I've learned from American Vampire, Detective and Batman to trust him. As to the art, Nguyen's style is busier and sketchier than I prefer, but his storytelling is clear and it's not unattractive.

So, you know, it's good. Even if I can't tell you what it's about!
